Votes vs St Kilda

Our worst performance of the season. Just like last year's game.

5. Jones - turned up for the game at 2.10 pm EST and played it for 4 quarters. A marking target.
4. Collica - brave, composed and sensible. Beat his opponent. Helped his fellow defenders and used the ball well.
3. McDougall - did a few good things, scored a couple of goals, was a tall marking target and at least broke even in the ruck (ie did not consistently find the blokes in the St Kilda jumpers). Needs more ground time
2. Braun - tried hard, very hard, will probably get most votes, but I've penalised him for one handed tackles and poor disposal
1. Glass - had 4 kicked on him, but in one of the most one-sided games you could wish to see. Did well under pressure, never gave up and scrags well.

I'm not going to even look at the stats or watch any part of the game again. I refuse to award points to players who only played well for one quarter (Chick 2nd, Haynes 3rd) or who were beaten by their opponent (Cousins) or who got a lot of the ball but repeatedly did stupid things with it (Cox, Carroll). It's hard enough without Gardiner, Fletcher & Embley - without Kerr, Judd and Sampi also, it's well nigh impossible.

Dont know how Jones didnt get a mention in the above votes...

5 - Jones : Brilliant all day, really stood up both when we were being flogged and then even more when we had to lift. Truly deserving of BOG for Eagles for me.
4 - Braun : Again tried hard all day, went hard at the ball, was at bottom of packs, wanted the ball.
3 - Cox : Was winning the ruck knocks and you could see him directing it to our players bu often they stodd their and the saints player took it. Its not going to be hand fed every game, Cox did his all to get first use, midfield just didnt take it.
2 - Cousins : Was superb in the last half. At half time he would no way have gotten votes but was a key in our revival and kept trying all day. Led from the front. As much as it would have been nice if hed started from the start once in the position we were in you couldnt have asked more from the captain
1 - McDougall : Looked good wherever he played, down back, up forward, in the ruck. Marked pretty wel and ran hard, worthy of a vote.

Also i thought Staker was terrific, lots of quick hands and a few hard ball gets. Took a few marks as well, looks a likely prospect.

I'm inclined to agree with Ozzult on this one. Not happy.

5. Jones. I agree entirely with VoR on this one
4. Braun. At least he had a bit of the ball. Tackling could have been better, but he was no orphan there.
3. McDougall. Provided an option, and was reasonable in the ruck.

Now for players who don't deserve votes, but unfortunately this is a 5-4-3-2-1.

2. Collica. Reasonable defensive effort given how much the ball was down there.
1. Carroll. Not a great game, but could be said to have beaten his opponent for more than one quarter.

I've tried to think of an alternate 1 vote as realistically Carroll was crap too, but I can't come up with one. Glass perhaps, but Fraser got four goals on him so no. Cousins, Chick, Haynes, Green, Hunter (and most of the team) only bothered with one quarter's effort. Quite a few didn't even bother with that much (Kerr, Sampi, Judd, Matera, Jakovich). Cox might as well have been rucking for St Kilda for all the good he did, Wirrpunda was taken to the cleaners by Xavier Clarke.

Certainly there was noone unlucky not to get a vote.

i'm giving my votes in protest and only giving votes to guys who aren't in contention to win the title this year.....

5 - Andrew McDougall
4 - David Haynes
3 - Michael Collica
2 - Kasey Green
1 - Brent Staker

5 Braun
4 McDougall
3 Wirra
2 Jones
1 Cousins

-5 Kerr - what a soft****. He didn't even try.

What difference would that have made. None of the guys who were in contention deserved a vote today (unless of course you were handing out negative votes). Cousins would have been closest, and he only played one quarter.

It's funny, but something I've noticed this year. Cousins played ok today, not bad, but certainly not at his best. He was definitely in our best 5. Yet he gets few votes.

Is that because we expect more of him? Or is that because the team has played badly so we look for young guys who might have played ok so we can give them a vote to give ourselves hope that we have talent coming through?

Today we played badly. It will happen.

yes i know, but i wanna make it known how ****ed off I am. I love the club I support, and I don't ever want to be put through that pain again. I take the same philoposophy when i go out on the field - If I play like a ******* i'll tell everyone that, and if my teammates are playing ****, i'll tell them that (without obviousbly singling people out).

And larrikan - yes a lot of it comes down to expecting more than what Cuz gave us today. I don't know if he was in our top 5, would've been close purely on the third term, but in the end he was a guy who needed to give us much more and he didn't.... These votes will come from a mixture of how good someone plays, and how good they can play.

Yeah well, unfortunately no other award in the world works like that. Should Grant Hackett not receive a gold medal for winning if he's 2 seconds behing his world record, and some clown form Japan (2 minutes behind) breaks the national record?

The best players on the ground should get votes, Cousins was in the best 5 (if not up tp his best)

yes but human nature when it comes to pure judgement will always take into account how someone can perform. When it comes to something like swimming or somewhere were there's a scoreboard, you can't argue against that. but here we're talking about peoples judgement's and that "what are the capable of doing v what they actually did" will always came into it - human nature. We want to see the best in our players.

And also, I don't think you'd class Cousins in the best 5 on the ground as he really only played for one quarter......although that one quarter was brilliant.

Only played brilliantly in 1 and a half quaters, but was solid besides that. Good enough for the best 5 in a side that lost by 10 goals for me.

Thats your opinion and you're entitled to it

I however, dont believe Cousins was one of our best 5 players, and therefore have voted accordingly.

This whole award system is based purely on the individual's opinion. I often look at peoples votes and cringe, but the fact of the matter is it's their opinion.

It's fine to speculate on the way people vote, but to say theyre wrong just because you believe a particular player was deserving is no justification.

People watched the game of footy

People voted on who they felt deserved votes

Im sure you did the same. You think someone deserves a vote, fine, vote for em. But dont go around saying everyone is wrong who left him out because you didnt vote the same way.

You've just changed your argument. If you didn't think Cousins was in the best 5 for us on the field, I have n o problem with that. If you are not giving him a vote because he was in our best 5 and you think he can perform better, then there is my problem.
