Went and watched this game today, thinking it was Tassie (don't ask me why, I know they're not in the same division) and was pleasantly surprised to wander in at quarter time and see it was Metro.
We were 2 goals up at this stage and kept that margin until half time, trading goals. Players for WA that were going quite well were Donaldson (38), Darling (28), Neates (6), Colyer (1). One thing I was beginning to wonder though, in the second, is whether coaches actually rated blocks, shepherds etc anymore, because there was none of it, I don't remember 1 for the quarter.
Well, Barge must have given them some rocket at half time because the shepherds, blocks etc increased astronomically in the third, led by my player of the match, Mitch Duncan. I've seen a bit of Duncan, but nothing like I saw today. He imposed himself, hit Metro hard, took some good grabs (will just need to curb his aggression because a couple of times he had 'stray' elbows). The highlight for me was Duncan gving the ball over the top to Matera, running hard back towards goals, then sprinting 50m to take the pursuing player out of the play, but then I love the sacrificial stuff
. Morabito ran harder than most, Swallow started (or kept) running harder, Matera just wreaked Havoc (never seen him before so it was a pleasure), Collica was the surprise packet, played very well kicking quite a few. Hutching tackles well all the time, Colyer and Neates were also surprise packets for me, not knowing much about them. Super quarter, whole team involved, kicking 8 or 9 goals.
Last quarter and Duncan kept at it, as did Morabito, Matera, Neates, Colyer, Collica and Swallow, but Nicholas Winmar joined the party, not that he had been quiet, rather he came to the fore, as did Wilson down back and Darling up forward. WA, as a group, just ran harder than Metro and while Metro kicked a few goals, WA ended up pummelling them 21 g 6 to 10 g 8?. A lot of kids that have a good work ethic in that team and look very good players. Unfortunately, a number look headed for the GC from next year. Good, entertaining game of footy though!
