The WACA is a shambolic organisation, the only good part about the ground is inside the fence, the outfield and wicket make for very good cricket. Outside the fence it's facilities are the worst of any ground in Australia... including Paterson's Stadium.

Seem to do OK running cricket.

At the beginning Colin briefly mentions that he wants the WAFC to move into the WACA after the new Stadium is built and Subiaco goes.

That has been the talk for a while along with making some changes to teh groun to make sure football can be played there again. They would then be able to play a 'game of the week' there and Chennel 7 or whoever is doing the TV coverage can keep their cameras and equipment in the one spot and not have to cart them round to a different WAFL ground each week.

Makes perfect sense. They'll have to lengthen the ground though. It will be a disappointing to lose the pitch but it's a smart move.

AFL gets played on cricket pitches at the Gabba and SCG despite the AFL and AFLPA wanting otherwise. The WAFC won't be able to strong arm the WACA to remove the pitch during winter.

They won't get rid of the pitch but sadly I think the health and safety people will say they need to get rid of the carpet quality grass that is perfect for cricket. The reason for this is when the eagles and dockers played on it players would slip and I assume get injuries from it. So for cricket they will probably have to downgrade to what they use at other AFL/cricket grounds. Which isn't a disaster but the outfield will just be that bit slower.

Would WAFL finals be played at the WACA, if they move there?

Would they play WAFL finals at the WACA, or the new stadium, or home game advantage at the suburban stadiums (eg - Souths at Freo Oval).

If the WACA wasn't used for WAFL finals it would be best for cricket - long period from August to mid-November to get the pitch and outfield right for cricket. But you'd imagine the TV network wouldn't want to play at suburban grounds is they've invested in a TV set-up at one location; but the new stadium would be too big for them.

Going to be a compromise either way.

Would the WACA go for drop-in pitches to accommodate the WAFL? Highly unlikely, but if they ever did it would be just as easy to drop pitches into the new stadium.

Just musing on the options, don't know what they'll do. Everything seems a compromise.

They would probably use the new stadium like they do in the VFL where they use Etihad for the grand final

Exactly in a perfect world the WACA would eventually turn into a high quality and modern boutique stadium that would be used for cricket in Summer and Footy in Winter

Interesting that Vic are playing Shield games in Alice Springs due to not one first class pitch available in Melbourne - Vic critics of the WACA need move comments to Bay14, 13 is full.

You mean CA is allowing Cricket Victoria to cry poor in order to get state government to fork out on the Junction Oval?

But it's quite obviously what happened.

Unless you actually believe Wagga Wagga has a ground that is first class standard and Victoria only has the MCG?

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the WACA

WA cricket has its own home, Vic cricket does not - a suburban cricket club calls the tune as it runs the venue.

Vic cricket searched for a venue in Vic but failed to find an acceptable replacement.

So does anybody know if they are selling full strength beer in the non members tomorrow because it's the world cup or if it is still under stupid WA laws?

There is no members area tomorrow.

The ICC have taken over the WACA and all other grounds for the whole world cup so the beer selection should be the same through out the stadium.

Colin Barnett spells out his WA sporting vision

Mr Barnett said he believed “the WACA does have a future”, but likely hosting NAB Cup, WAFL or Sheffield Shield games.

“I could envisage a WACA Ground that is perhaps scaled down as a beautiful cricket ground which would host Shield games and whatever else,” he said.

Mr Barnett said he would be open to helping fund the redevelopment of the WACA because “cricket hasn’t received a lot” of government funding.

“So in principle, we’re going to finish this (Perth) stadium first but, in principle, if there is a multi-use and some sort of redevelopment at the WACA, we’d certainly look at it,” he said.

So government funding would come if the WACA looks to be a multi-purpose venue. That would require the WAFC moving in and wouldn't happen until after the new stadium is finished, and that could all change if McGowan wins the next election.

i haven't listened to the audio but i'm betting this is a summary of what was said

PREMIER Colin Barnett has unveiled his sporting blueprint for WA, including a Derby opening for the new stadium, a new racing complex at Jandakot funded by the controversial sale of the TAB and a “scaled down” WACA Ground running as a secondary oval.

Mr Barnett also signalled the death of Subiaco Oval as a sporting venue, saying: “I don’t see a future for Subiaco”.

The Premier, who said he “hopes” to open the new stadium in 2018 if he is re-elected at the 2017 election, has opened up about some of the state’s biggest sporting issues in an interview with The Sunday Times.

Mr Barnett said he preferred a West Coast-Fremantle clash to open the new 60,000-seat stadium, under construction at Burswood, as debate continues to rage over which sport, including an international soccer or rugby match or even cricket, should be given the privilege.

“My preference and I would think most people would agree, that the first major event at the stadium ideally would be a West Coast Eagles and Dockers Round 1 game,” Mr Barnett said.

“That would be the most likely opening of the stadium ...

“While we’re not counting on it, there is a chance it will be available late in 2017 for a finals game.”

The Premier said he held fears for the future of the thoroughbred industry if Ascot or Belmont was not closed down for redevelopment into just one all-year-round major racing headquarters and a brand new complex in the outer metropolitan area.

But Mr Barnett said he believed the industry was at a turning point, mooting the development of a new state-of-the-art horse racing complex and training track in Jandakot if the TAB, valued as high as $1 billion, was sold.

“I am not trying to push people one way or the other on the TAB privatisation. But this is the one big roll of the dice for racing,” he said.

“If the TAB is privatised, racing could arguably get a lump of that money. We have not made any offers. At the moment, I’m just encouraged that people in the industry are looking at the future.

“As it is, I don’t think the future is very positive, I honestly don’t, and I want to see racing continue, it’s a big employer and the only traditional Australian sport.”
