Round 1 of the 2020 WAFL finally completed - the latest start to a WAFL season on record and what will be the least number of games (36) in home and away season since 1900

round 1 facts

WAFL Round 1: 2020

Perth def Peel Thunder
FACT: Both teams failing to register a goal in the first quarter (0.3 each) is the first time this has happened since P v SF in 2007 and just the 3rd time this century

West Perth def Swan Districts
FACT: West Perth set a club record for round 1 fixtures overcoming a 20 point 3 quarter time deficit the bigggest margin they have overcome at 3 qtr time in a season opener

Claremont def Subiaco
FACT: Claremont snap a 9 game losing streak against Subiaco and become the first team other than South Fremantle or Peel to defeat Subiaco since Perth beat the Lions in round 16, 2016

South Fremantle def East Fremantle
FACT: South Fremantle extend win streak over the Sharks to 10. After round 1, South Fremantle's percentage of 552.38% is the highest in club history and 11th highest for any team, whilst East Fremantle's 18.10% is their 3rd lowest only lower after their first two games they played back in 1898 and the 13th lowest ever

Great game by West Perth. South Fremantle played well. Claremont with a shock result. East Perth played well to handle the bye.

A good sign for the WAFL, besides from 2005, the weekends average crowd for the four games was the largest for a Round 1 since 1994 (the year before Freo entered the AFL).

And that 2005 Round 1 average crowd was boosted by the largest individual crowd in a Round 1 since 1986 (the year before West Coast entered the AFL).

Whilst this weekend didn’t even see a single crowd get into the top 10 largest crowds for a round 1 in that time, to have boosted the average.

So it means strong crowds across all the grounds.

The biggest disappointment with the WAFL is the WAFC.

Least Swan Districts had a go at online streaming via Facebook.

One game on Channel 7 and one game on Sports FM 91.3

Would be good if the WAFL app can link to the streams of Swan Districts. Need a one stop shop for streaming. The WAFL app didn't even make mention of the fact Swan Districts were streaming the game on Facebook. It should be listed in the fixtures. Piss poor effort by the WAFC.

They didn't even make mention that The West was streaming the Colts game of East Perth v East Fremantle.

The West makes huge efforts to stream high school football and South West Amateur League Football but doesn't stream WAFL league games.

Maybe Channel 7 dictates an exclusive rights to the WAFL league games and The West is owned by Channel 7 anyway, so in a way The West would be up against its stablemate.

Need all WAFL games and WAFLW games to be streamed live via the WAFL app or WAFL website.

The SANFL does this without any problem.

Yes, yes, YES!

Combine this with the fact there are no score updates for Reserves games. I can stomach no stats, but not even quarter by quarter score updates is diabolical. Plus the app doesn't even retrospectively show anything. Putrid!

Channel 7 game at 3pm is Subiaco v South Fremantle. Sports FM broadcasting West Perth v East Perth from 230pm.

I hate $ubi more than most but lets face it they didnt have the likes of- Horsley, Lockyer, Heal, Marsh, Braut, Borchet & Powell yesterday all out injured.

Why has Subiaco gone downhill so fast?

What is different between this season and last season?

Lost a few to retirement at the end of last season and a fair portion of our best side are all out injured.

Grand Final is at Freo Oval.

One of the great finishes to a final round I can remember.

Subi ahead of Perth on % but Perth play the undefeated South Freo, and A game and 16% ahead of East Perth . East Perth kick 7 goals to nil in the last quarter ,thrashing Peel and seemingly locking up 4th on % with Subi being well beaten by West Perth. The East Perth game finishes a few minutes before the Subi game . Subi decide to stage a late revival from 40 points down and while never going to win they get to within 21 points of West Perth. 1 more goal and they go back ahead of East Perth on % and back into the 4. Instead they kick 2 late behinds to drop to 5th ending their powerful dynasty. The late goals also drop West Perth back to 3rd and they miss out on the double chance by 0.2%.

As both these games end the Perth and South Freo game starts with East Perth just needing the undefeated South Freo to win. Perth who lost to Swan Districts last week need to win to break a 23 year finals drought. After an even first half South Freo break away in the 3rd quarter to lead by 15 points. Perth get a late goal to reduce the margin to 9 and then dominate the last quarter but for 15 minutes miss chance after chance , some of them not that difficult. Finally they hit the front and hold on in the last few minutes to reach the finals for the first tome since 1997. Great day for WAFL footy.

Was surprised how awful Subi were yesterday but pissed we blew the chance to get second. South have shown they are mortal. Should be a great finals series.

I've loved going around watching West Perth this season. Claremont Oval's can bar was surprisingly good and the Eagles haven't ruined Lathlain Park that much. Hopefully some life has been injected back in this year with no $ubi or Peel domination.

Have seen SF a few times this year and they are just going.
Were very ordinary against Perth last night, just refused to kick it long forward even after Perth hit the front and there were only a few minutes left.
They look very shaky down back.

We looked shaky down back because Blayne Wilson wasn't playing and the midfield was non-existent for a lot of the game yesterday. The amount of times Perth had numbers around the ground was ridiculous and there was no way the game should have even been close. I think a few of the players were starting to get a big head and hopefully that brings them back down a bit.

TBH, we haven't looked that great for a while now and have only been playing a quarter here and there which has been enough to get over the line.

It was nuts the finish to the season yesterday. and hard not to be caught up in every moment of it. Amazing that positions 2-8 are all dependant on the last round.

EP were not even considered a chance to pinch fourth. Well done them for giving themselves a chance and you just feel at half time that someone informed them that Subi were losing and they could sneak in should they belt Peel. What was amazing is WP almost helped EP make the finals- not gonna lie but as a WP fan, I'm glad that didn't end up panning out. EP are really coming along under Jeremy Barnard and they have their club back after ditching the Eagles.

WP were literally ONE BEHIND conceded off second. If the final score was 77-57, WP finish second likewise if WP scored two more points and it was 79-58.

I was at Basso last week and Perth were horrendous- it was more their ineptness than Swans being good that contributed to that result. Stunned they came back to beat Souths [and from what I saw on the live stream, they were 2-4 goals better for much of that match].

And now today, the two young sides, EF and SD play off to decide 7th and 8th. Both have improved as the season has gone on and will want to give their loyal supporters a nice memory to conclude 2020.

In many ways, in a weird year, this might be my favourite WAFL season in a long time.

The finals shall be interesting:
SF seem to have the wood on CL
WP have dominated PER for years [be a hell of a time to break a heavy losing streak]
CL generally defeat WP
SF best match up is WP, yet usually SF prevail..

Love on Twitter a Freo fan is bitching Perth and not the Dockers are on the back of the Sunday Times.

A 121 year old club breaking a 23 year old drought to make finals or a dead rubber. The modern football fan ladies and gentlemen.
