WAFL 2020

Does anyone know the reason why the premiers get three trophies? It doesn’t really make much sense!

The first trophy is the perpetual trophy which is the biggest one of the three. The premiers are awarded the cup at the game and get to keep it for a few months on display at their club premises before handing it back to the WAFC in readiness for the next Grand Final.

The second trophy is the Premiers' trophy, this is a smaller trophy which is awarded to the premiers. This trophy is one each premier gets to keep in honour of winning the premiership for that year.

The third trophy is the Dixson Cup which is the oldest premiership cup in Australian football and is named after Sir Hugh Dixson who was responsible for Australian football being the first organised football code in WA. Before the end of June 1885, Dixson agreed to create a premiership cup and would award the cup to the club which won the WAFL premiership (then known as the West Australian Football Association) three times. Unions achieved this in 1889 and were then awarded the cup after winning their third premiership. The cup itself then spent more than 100 years in private ownership before the WAFC, along with the WAFL clubs, West Coast Eagles and Fremantle bid for the cup at auction earlier this year which they subsequently won. With the cup now back in the hands of the WAFC, it was then agreed that from 2020 onwards, the League premiers would be awarded the cup alongside the perpetual trophy for winning the WAFL premiership.

Although I think it's great the Dixson Cup is back with the WAFC where it belongs, it is another Grant Dorrington pet project... Who knows at what cost (not just financial) it comes at
