How did Mitchell Clarke go for East Fremantle? I noticed he played seniors - I take it they have changed that rule not allowing under 18's to play WAFL seniors until after the National Carnival?

The new Colts policy allows players to play in the Seniors once they have played a minimum of 5 Colts games. It is beleived that the strong performance of Luke Blackwell with the Swan Districts League team prompted the change over the old guidlines. If they aren't playing League they must play Colts, not Reserves.

If only that was the case, but far more likely is that the Showgrounds game was a special one-off event that drew a big crowd for that reason. Plus there was a big Eagles function on that Claremont cashed in on (and good on them).

Yes it was really one off promotion , but this is the sort of thing the WAFL needs . A little bit of promotion and lateral thinking .What if clubs had child minding areas so young families could really relax and watch the game ?

I would like to think there is more people turning up at the WAFL these days and i seriously do think some people are returning but these figures have been inflated by the Showgrounds game and the last game for Brad Bootsma. The South Freo v East Perth game draw about 3000 and the Showgrounds game draw about 7000-8000 so i would like to see the figures at the end of round 2.

Also i agree the WAFL is still getting a raw deal in the media. Although today (22/3) the WAFL did receive quite a bit of paper coverage in the West. But 7,9,10 dont really give it a fair go. If it does get some coverage on air it is due to a West Coast player doing this or a Fremantle player doing this not because of a non aligned player doing some good!

Well done channel 31 with WAFL On and ABC with their coverage of the games.

I watch WAFL On every Thursday night - it's a great little show. Full marks to Channel 31. I disagree that the ABC gives a fair go to the WAFL. I've strongly believed for years that the WAFL would be better off on a commercial channel, where commercial stations are more likely to support and promote their product. The WAFL has been a big ratings winner for years on a Saturday afternoon and it deserves better than being on a more nationally focussed broadcaster with limited funding.

Similarly in other states the ABC televises the state competitions .
An idea I put a while ago , for the state premiers to play against each other in a superbowl would create a defacto second national competition .
This would enhance all the local competitions with cross promotion .

I was thinking of an idea for a pre-season tournament involving SANFL, WAFL and VFL clubs, or maybe a shield competition whereby the premiers of the three will play each other.

Below them, a knock-out comp for the premiers of the 16 VCFL major leagues, and competitions where winners of other regional leagues e.g. ACTAFL, NTFL and SFL from Tasmania, NTFL (NT), QAFL, etc might also play in pre-season.

I was definately thinking post season as a focus on crowds ; with the expectant crowds being at least half the GF crowd i.e. the crowd that follows the premier and a few extra going for state pride reasons .

Down the track I was thinking representative teams from lesser state leagues could play off for a place .

I agree with this but as no one wants to get near the WAFL i am glad the ABC is at least trying to get the WAFL out there.

Always funny when it comes to GF week and then you see highlights of the teams training and all the media come out of the woodwork like most supporters! Im surprised 7 didnt get on board after they lost the AFL rights... maybe channel 9 will get on board once they lose the AFL rights in the coming years, doubt it though...

There used to be a carnival ages ago like this but it was lost. Would love to see a carnival where the top 2 sides of every comp face off in a carnival in a different state every year. Would certainly get the media attention and a bloody good following as i wouldnt mind seeing the SANFL and VFL sides playing to see the difference in standards, if any.
