In the West Australian today there was this interesting piece between the WAFL and SANFL.

Teams - WAFL (9), SANFL (9)
Salary Cap - WAFL ($175,000), SANFL (305,000)
Club dividends/grants - WAFL ($273,000), SANFL ($392,000)
2004 Crowds (incl finals) - WAFL (202,797), SANFL (312,360)
Players drafted to AFL 2004 - WAFL (6), SANFL (15)
Ex/Current AFL players used last week - WAFL (38), SANFL (63)
AFL players finals criterion - WAFL (5 games), SANFL (3 games)
Interchange players - WAFL (4), SANFL (3)
Admission (adult) - WAFL ($9), SANFL ($8)
15+ goal teams up to R4,2005 - WAFL (8), SANFL (13)
Under-age competition - WAFL (under-18), SANFL (under-17 and under-19)
AFL Funding - WAFL ($1.2 million), SANFL ($600,000)
2005 country games - WAFL (3), SANFL (0)
ABC TV Audience - WAFL (1.2 million), SANFL (1.6 million)

Interesting comparison of both comps and as we all know the SANFL is by far the better competition with more money to throw around. That is despite the AFL funding for the WAFL being double that of the SANFL. Im not sure where this money goes to whether it being the facilities of Subiaco oval or upgrading of Leederville oval im not too sure.

I think when the Crows were formed, the SANFL clubs were better looked after than the WAFL clubs were when the Eagles joined the AFL. I guess those figures are a legacy of the work Max Basheer and his men left the SANFL.

The SANFL is real footy, not that corporate garbage that mascarades under the name of AFL football. In a way it's a pity my only interest in the AFL is the Hawks, a club I've followed since the 1960s. If it wasn't for them it would be so easy to ignore the AFL altogether.

It would be interesting to see how Subiaco would go against the top SANFL clubs.

Good post Wellsy i think four interchange players and a couple of country games next year would be good for the SANFL, also the salary cap could be lifted to $320,000 as most clubs are over it anyway....

Have the WAFL experimented with free entry for the U-18's?

Those stats aren't very good for WA footy...

Yeah for the last year and this year if you arrive before HT of the Colts (under-18) games then you get free entry and can sit and watch the reserves and league games aswell. Otherwise you pay the $9 or if your a club member it is like $8 or something. I get in free no matter what so it doesnt phase me :D

Yeah i couldnt believe the SANFL had only 3 players on the bench still. Thought they would of changed with the AFL et al and gone to 4. Would make such a difference in those hot games to have an extra player with some fresh legs.

The country games here are difficult for supporters in the metro area to get to but it is good for country residents. It is good advertising for the clubs and good to get out into their zones to promote football and promote the club.

East Fremantle v Perth @ Geraldton
Peel Thunder v East Perth @ Donnybrook
Subiaco v Peel Thunder @ Esperance

nothing beats the feeling of hitting alberton, grabbing a quality balfours product and watch the magpies. the SANFL is a terrific competition.
Well id have to say going to woody oval and watching the eagles does :D

Price wise it beats the Afl hands down $8 adults and $ 2 concession and under 18 free. Mind you car parking cost me more than getting into Adelaide oval yesterday.

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard, why would you grab a Balfours (egads!) when the pasty man is always there at half time in the outer outside the gate, one of the few things I look forward to at Alberton!!!

I think the colts (u18) are played as a curtain raiser to the reserves and league games, not as games on thier own.

They don't have a wa version of the TAC Cup either.

The WAFL does have an U-18 grade which I think plays at 9:30am alongside the other two divisions.

I think that an SANFL U-19 team should be playing a VFL Tac Cup side as the curtain raiser to this year's Representative Match. A one off match, or as part of the Commonwealth Bank (Teal) Cup carnival.

Oh ok, so the players who represent South Australia at National Championships each year are actually u19 players mixed with the odd bottom age player from u17 level ?
I could be wrong, but they are still aged under 18..they just play against boys nearer 19... I think its a good idea..keeps those slow developers in the game a bit longer without been discarded as not being good enough for reserves standards. Under 17 players that show a bit will still rise through the ranks.
