I agree that we need to tie Waitey down to one spot for the year, and stop using him as gap filler.

I had gone along with the recent consensus that CHB was a good idea, but have changed my mind, especially after watching the game on Saturday. I think it's CHF or bust for Waite.

The guy has athleticism, plays a lot on instinct, and has natural attacking flair. He runs hard at the ball, and even harder when he has the ball in his hands..everything you want in a CHF.

As a backman he tends to drift off his man a bit. His attack on the ball pulls him up the ground, and can leave the rest of the backline vulnerable. He can also clanger with the best of them, which you can get away with up forward, but generally has more dire consequences in the backline.

CHB sounds good in theory, but I think it goes against his instinct as a footballer. You might change that at 18 or 19, but at 25 we need to utilise the talent he's got.

We have plenty to develop down back. Bower looked good, Jamieson & Setanta will come along, Austin I don't know about, but others seem to rate him. If it means another year or two of pain in the back half so be it, but let's not restrict the most natural CHF on our list.

You are right Jamieson will be a star as will Sentanta, but the one i am worried about abit is Bower, its good that he tries to take on opponents but sometimes tries to do a little too much.

a STAR:rolleyes:. Good average players at best. The word "star" is so over used. I'm sick of hearing that everyone will be a star. Can't we be honest and say they might be servicable players.

Chad Cornes is a star, Jamison has improved rapidly, but won't ever get to that level....has worked hard though and we are much better off with him than without.

No i cant say that because i honestly think he will be a star for us. Perhaps someone like Bentick i can say will be a serviceable player, or even a Richard Hadley

I thought that we were playing Waite in the midfield this year? Why hasn't there been any talk on this board or from the Coach about Waite's position this year?

We won't be going with waite in the middle this year!!

He'll be part of the 21 player interchange bench while Judd plays all 18 positions! Its one way of ensuring everyone on the ground has Judd like disposal;)

I prefer Waite to play forward, the only way I would play him back is if Hartlett or Edwards come on in leaps & bounds, then we can afford that luxury.

Lets go with Jammo, Setanta, Thornton & Bower as our bigger defenders.

I would still like to see Kreuzer tried in defence in the pre-season comp.

The thing with Waite is when he plays back he often gives his man too much space and when he plays forward he kicks the difficult goals but sprays the easy ones.I would prefer he play CHF and focus on goalkicking

We don't have much depth at either end.

With Fisher and Hartlett in the team Waite doesn't need to go forward.

With Setanta down back with Jammo, Bower and Thornton then Waite doesn't need to be a defender...........

Hence he tends to go between the two.

As for drifting off his man, he was one of very VERY few players to beat Nick Riewoldt over 4 quarters last year...........you don't do that by being unaccountable.

He needs to learn when to attack and when to defend........he will only do that by staying down their and learning the position.

As for clangers not hurting you in the forward line.......go back and watch the first 10 mins of Sat night. We dominated play and yet were down by 7 points to 3.........then BANG........all of a sudden the Hawks took off.

Lastly, Franklin didn't do that much on the first half......I thought Waite broke even with him.

We'd love to have two of him, but unless Setanta can play CHB then it looks like Waitey.:thumbsu:

i cant believe BlueYoss hasnt put his thoughts forward yet???

BlueYoss has decided that he no longer feels the need to re-iterate his thoughts on Waite every time someone starts another new thread about him.

Please advise Pamam that this thread will not be providing yet annother opportunity for him to use the words BlueYoss, manlove and Waite in the same sentence (yet again!) :p

See what your saying, but don't believe Fisher could ever fill CHF, and Hartlett....well hopefully we'll see one day.

Never said clangers wont hurt you in the forwardline, just that they can be more damaging in the backline.

Never said anything about his performance on Franklin. What I found interesting is we were supposed to nail him down at CHB this year, but as soon as we were under the pump he was pushed forward. What sort of message does that send the guy, when Ratts is on record saying he will be CHB. When he did go forward we had a target, and a functioning forwrd line. Fev wasn't sucked forward, and we had the structure un-settle the Hawks

We'd love to have two of him

No arguments there!

Sure, not specifically, but when you say:

it sounds like you don't rate him there.
I was merely pointing out that he did a good job, and has done so on some very good CHF's.

I will admit I had a smile to myself when he got thrown forwards......Ratts.....welcome to Pagan's world.
My comments re Fisher was not that he would be a CHF, just that he provides a great target up forwards and is a great foil for Fev.
No arguments there!
I would love to play Wait in the forward line........and I would love to put Hampson there too......impossible to match up on, but the fact is we have other guys, not currently fit, who can play forward.......we have no other guys that can play CHB (that we have seen.....but maybe Setanta), and no other rucks..........

Again my point about depth.
We have to use Waite were he is of the most use....time will tell which end that is at I suppose.:thumbsu:

For starters, whoever said you'd put Hartlett up forward ahead of waite?!
shows your knowledge of the game....
the suggestion some people are making that if he doesn't hold down one position his position on the list will be questioned is ridiculous.

If I had to choose the best player to play either CHF or CHB i would choose waite everytime over everyone on our list. So pull ya head in.

Personally, i think he's most effective as a CHF, no doubt about that. His kicking needs improving but his a natural forward and structure wise we look so much better when his there.
However, atm his needed at CHB untill our young defenders come on as we'll get pumped if his not down there.
Fisher's injury hurts us though, and waite may be needed up forward untill he comes back. But I think waite is definately our best option at either CHB or CHF

Waite is better suited playing in the foward line. He really isn't that good playing downback. He will have a lot of trouble playing guys like Brown, Lucas, Riewolt, and Franklin.

He's soo good at CHF! He turns our forward line into such a potent one. Unfortunately we need him more in the back line ATM.

I do understand Ratten though... Without fisher our forward line is just FEV again and lacks firepower as well as someone to draw quality defenders off Fev.

Definitely CHF for mine. He's a natural forward so just bloody play him there. He does look out of place in defence at times.

Having said that, he does posses a fantastic vertical leap.....................................................
