Scans yesterday confirmed suspicions that Waite had damaged the ligament, but not totally ruptured it.
Melbourne knee surgeon Julian Feller will today scrutinise the scans, and may decide Waite needs an immediate knee reconstruction.
Waite also has bone bruising and some damage to his lateral meniscus, which will keep him out for 4-6 weeks, regardless of the extent of the ACL injury.
The club could decide to put his knee in a brace for 6-10 weeks and hope the ACL repairs itself, as it did for Western Bulldogs midfielder Daniel Giansiracusa.
Or Waite could have an arthroscope to repair the meniscus damage, while at the same time assessing the damage to the ACL.
