I have watched a few matches from 2001, 2002 on fox footy, and the reason why we were a much better team under wallace was becasue of our tackling. that, i believe was the main difference.
thoughts..?
 
I seem to remember that towards the end of Wallace's tenure we had one of the lower tackling counts in the League. The only reason we weren't the lowest was because Libba's tackle counts were always above average.

I stand to be corrected on this...

I do agree that we were much tougher under Wallace - though that's hardly a bold statement.
 
When did each of Libba, Dimma and Romero retire?

And if we were tough under Wallace and not under Rohde the following season, was it all Rohde's reponsibility?

I always remember that line from "Year of the Dogs" when Joyce got the bullet: "It's easier to sack one man than 22..."

I remember in 98 when we were a very good side, we played Carlton out at Princes Park mid year and got absolutely thrashed. We were woeful - unaccountable, undisciplined and generally deplorable. It was a one-off for the season, but by god we were bad.

Anyway, I was in the rooms after the game, and Plough let rip into them. I was standing well away from where he was addressing them, but I could feel the soundwaves going through me. He was furious and he let them know.

The next week, we played Collingwood, and the players responded - giving them an 8 goal drubbing. Plough had gotten through to them.

Now, I concede that I was never in the rooms during Rohde's tenure, but virtually all the time after we came off a poor performance under him, the next week, we were hardly any different - still lacking spark and unnaccountable.

That, for mine, if the fundamental difference between Plough and Rohde, and why Plough is a good coach and why Rohde is a bad coach.

Plough had the ability to get through to the players. Rohde did not.

Fair enough, but what responsibility do the players have for their own performances?

I don't think that Rohde was much of a coach, but it's interesting that somehow Harris and Eagleton really improved in his time.
 
Even in the good years under Wallet we still had trouble being a clinical and consistant side. We would continually lose matches we were outright favourites for and yet win the unwinable. So much seems to have to do with the frame of mind the players turn up with.
 
Wallet was the better coach no doubt, but Rohde the better person. Wallet said what everyone wanted to hear. One thing I admired about Rohde was his honesty which is something Wallet wasn't big on.

Libba at the end of 2002.
Jose was the year before, 2001 - But suffered injury after injury so you hardly saw him that year.
Dimma was delisted without a farewell game by Rhode. End of 2002 or 2003?
 
Cliches in footy are often true. There is one that goes 'youre only as good as your opposition lets you be' or something along those lines.

Even at the height of our powers in 97 and 98, any of the _current_ top teams would have comfortably accounted for us.

Wallet gave us a firm gameplan to adhere to, and the motivation to stick to it, and that resulted in tremendous self-belief. During those years, that combination was almost enough to win the flag because those were poor years. Everybody was rebuilding, there were no power teams.

Wallets gameplan was tailored to the players we had to work with, and placed an emphasis on hard work rather than ability. for that specific couple of years, it was a good plan, and it almost came off. But the plan was fundamentally flawed, and wallet didnt acknowledge it, and other teams passed us by - taller, harder at the ball and more direct teams... our slide down the ladder was inevitable unless wallet did something about it. but he didnt, he just bailed out.

rhodes misfortune was to inherit an unbalanced side that was low on confidence and hadnt played hard direct footy in 6 years.

thats all there is to it.
 
and lets not forget that when Wallet took over, he had players like Johnson, Grant, West, Wynd, Liberatore, Darcy,Smith and Romero in the peak of their careers. Handy players in Dent, Southern, Croft, Kretiuk, Hunter, Kolynuik etc.. at this disposal. Also pick up N.Brown in the 96 draft.

As their time passed, and his gameplan worked out, as well as having to develop his own drafted younger group, he was found wanting. We then spent his last 3 season at the club struggling. He then bailed.

He will improve the Tigers , no doubt. But he will have to show naother string to his bow at the tigers to make them a fianl 8 side, becasue he doesnt have the resources available to him (players), like when he took over the Dogs in 96.
What will the Tigers supporters do to him, if in fact 2-3 season on from here, he has failed to develop the young brigade he inhereted from the Tiges and drafted this year. History tells us he failed to do so at the Bulldogs.

Beautifully summed up, Stef. I would also add that Wallet had almost too much belief in his own ability, meaning he wanted to conjure the "rabbit out of the hat" victories (circa 2000-2002), and preferred this mode of operation over on-field predictability and stability. Those years were very chaotic, with massive come-from-behind victories against top 4 teams followed by shocking losses against low ranked sides. I guess Essendon and Brisbane have proven the theory that settled line-ups are generally more successful. The way we lined up, no wonder we had such a poor finals record, because when the heat is really on, the teams with the most settled structure generally come out on top.

Spot on Sedat and Stefoid.
As far as I'm concerned if you look back over history, the great, not good, great coaches won finals.Wallace's record in finals was appalling.
Rhode is a teacher/administraor/team manager who couldn't coach. He should do well at Port.

I suggest you clean up your own back yard first before coming on here and calling the Bulldogs disorganised "rabble". If you can't contribute anything worthwhile to this thread, it might be a good idea to go back on your board and do your trolling. :)

Team boards are for supporters of each team. Respect the team when you post on their board.

Obviously you dont read before you go onto another teams board.
