86% tog, 8 possessions, 25% DE

The set shot was good, the snap on the wrong foot was poor.

I think we need him putting in the running work up the field, not in congestion but that horrible role where you are on the open side and deliver forward. Arguably it should be a role less skilled players can play because they just hit the next player down the line and it ends up in the pocket - but Walters can hit the target in the corridor.

If he can't play a HF/Wing range then I don't know if he can play the pressure forward or crumbing forward roles.

It baffles me that Walters hasn't adjusted his game as his body ages. He's still trying to play like a 28 year old with fast acceleration, quick pivots off one leg and tight running arcs. His body can no longer do any of those, hence why he spends so much time falling over.

He's still a skillful player though, with some a good footy brain, straight line speed (over short distances) and a lovely kick.

So why not try to play in a bit more space, or play a small leading forward role where he only needs to run in a straight line? He's probably our best kick from 40 m out on the flank, why not play to his strength?

You're not an inside midfielder with breakaway pace anymore, SonSon. Nor are you a nippy crumbing forward who can deftly steal the ball from I50 congestion. It's time to adapt or else it's a mentoring role at Peel until his contract finishes up.
Can't fly for marks anymore either.

Even so, there is no excuse for playing him on BHilly.

His attitude has looked pretty ordinary for 3 years now and it is translating to his performance. It’s time for JL to make the call and drop him. It’s unforgivable if he coninues to keep his spot while Erasmus, Crowden and Henry aren’t getting a game.
I would love to see how he reacts to being dropped, does he go back to Peel and force his way back in?

Assuming Mundy is good to go I'd actually give Mundy and Walters 50/50 midfield minutes this week. Put it back on Walters, Fyfe and Darcy are out so go in and be the senior player at 50% of the centre bounces and if you can't help us beat an understrength Eagles you're having a run for Peel.

OR play Erasmus.

I don't think there is a spot for Walters in the midfield for a couple reasons. He is no longer quick enough and more importantly he is another small body. We need some more big, younger bodies in the midfield to give us more grunt around the ball. Brayshaw and Serong have come on in leaps and bounds but they aren't big enough to knock opposition players off the ball consistently to allow more clearances.

Yeah if you throw Walters in, with Serong and the occasional Switta/Crowden you're going with 2-3 sub 180cm mids most of whom aren't quick. Defensive nightmare out of the middle.

The small slow mids is a problem because if you've got big and strong mids you either;
Tap it down to your own mids and they push their opponent off the ball,
The opposition ruck gets it to their mids and you're right there beside them and push them off the ball,
One of the rucks stuffs up and it goes to the other team, but again your big boys push the opposition off the ball,
Or your ruck taps it into space and your faster mids get there first and clear it without having to push anyone off the ball.

We want Walters kicking the ball, we just do, he is good at it. He is at a disadvantage trying to win it and goes to ground too much and he can't get into space to have it given to him enough.

He needs to be working his arse off running the high half forward on the fat side role and if he starts being too dangerous to the opposition doing that he will be manned up and he is out of the rest of the game.

Just think he needs to go back to Peel and get some confidence. His ball use by foot is exquisite but he's not getting anywhere near it.

I'm also surprised how often we continue kick to flat-footed team mates who get picked off by intercept marks. One of the first things I was taught in the game was not to pass to stationary targets.

Need to pull the trigger on the kick to them earlier when they are moving, but that's only in general play. We can't expect our opposition to let us have free men running around without earning it with superior workrate.

That 30 seconds Walters spent on his stomach on the wing watching the play was worrying. He got up holding his arm but the dive to tackle Brad Hill was an unrealistic attempt. Why was he even playing on Brad Hill today? Did he ask for that role because of their friendship to try and best his best mate? Hill made some mistakes with turnovers but he had 30 possessions - their leading metres gain player. There's no way Walters has the aerobic capacity to chase Hill around.
One of the bigger grievances I had with the game, the only explanation for putting Sonny on Hill I imagine was to force Hill to be more defensive, JLo probably had higher hopes of our midfield's performance for this plan to work. But to go in at half time, see us getting pantsed in the guts, Hill rebounding out the backline and to STILL keep playing Sonny on him, especially when our other forward, who has the pace and pressure to keep up with Hill, has had barely a touch to the half and zero influence playing deep (Frederick if you hadn't picked it), truly a bad coaching call that one.

I do understand the philosophy of backing your players in to respond, but 5 mins into that 3rd quarter should have been enough for JLo to realise the player's were not responding and tactics and match ups needed to shift.

The problem is that too often all our players are stationary and we have only two options (1) try to hit a stationary target or (2) bomb it long inhope.

I was amazed to see Walters being asked to run with Hill. Was it Hill's birthday and the club has a gift for him?

Walters did hunt him quite a bit, read the play better than Hill and was there when he arrived for a tackle.

Not often. But Walters' footy brain is outstanding.
If that's the case, why can't he understand that entering contests head first and exiting them holding his head does nothing to elicit a sympathetic response form the umpire?

If the remaining clubs in his golf bag don't fit the purpose he has to use what he has.

Winning a free kick is a tactic, winning the ball is better but he can't really run away from someone once he has.

Thing is due to have constant diving and acting he doesn’t even get the frees that are there anymore. Rightly so as well imo.

Walters is a legend. I'm not having a crack at him, although I don't think he is doing enough to deserve being in the side. And asking him to play on Hill was a poor decision, and an opportunity lost for someone like Frederick.
