Anyone here a wiz at building PCs? I'm thinking about building a gaming PC, one I can also use for editing programs like photoshop, Vegas pro and studio fl etc. I wouldn't mind having a bluray drive either for movies.

A question, do I get a 4k monitor or stick to 1080p, not interested in multiple monitors (for now). I'm happy to spend around 2k-2.5k, maybe even push 3k if I have to. Basically, I want it to beast, is my build possible with my budget?

This is the key question regarding your build, how important is using photoshop and vegas to you as it will determine whether you need a processor with hyperthreading and additional ram. You can still build a beast but save quite a bit of money if its only something you do once in awhile

Edit: Threw this together in 10 minutes but gives you an idea of where you will want to go considering your budget.

Monitor is purely subjective depending on whether you need true colour for your photo/video editing or low latency for gaming

Edit 2: Here is what i built a few months ago for around $1500 which will run photoshop or vegas admirably and max out pretty much every game i throw at it (i already had a Noctua cooler and hard drives from my previous machine)

Intel i5 4690K (OC'd to 4.5Ghz)
ASRock Z97M Pro4
G.Skill Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Crucial MX100 256GB
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (OC'd to 980 specs)
Fractal Design Define R4 Black
Antec High Current Gamer 620W 80+ Bronze

What 1500 for that?! You can build something that powerful for max $1000
If your pc can play games at pretty much max it can do photoshop no worries, you won't have to spend over $1k to get something to do both well

Good luck. It's never really interested me, but I've heard from a few friends that it's not overly hard. Hopefully you can chuck together a good build.

If you've got the cash then 4k is probably worth it if you're really into things like Photoshop, otherwise it's probably a bit of a waste at this point.

As for your build there are plenty of builds listed on Whirlpool and Reddit that you'd be able to tweak to suit your needs.

Nivida are apparently about to release their top end cards for this generation that will take better advantage of 4k so I would wait until the end of Feb if you can. (I imagine though a PC built around these cards might be more then you budget)

Otherwise get a 1440P monitor will better utilize the current graphics cards if you have to buy now.

One bit of advice I give everyone when building a PC is to never skimp on the motherboard, stuffs you when you want to upgrade stuff later on down the track.
