Like DVD, many of these companies share the patents and royalties.
Also like DVD, all of these HW companies will release drives, transports, players and compete against each other like they do with DVD. You'll have all the choice you like from that above group which is something like 90% of the CE market.
Now that the war is won, I'd expect that there will be a rush of new HW.
Sony took one for the team by releasing the PS3 with BR, and they'll get a fair chunk of the money too as the PS3 is a very good BR player.

Interesting.MICROSOFT could introduce Blu-ray support for the Xbox 360 gaming console if consumers wanted it, an executive said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Xbox 360 currently supports HD-DVD, the rival to Blu-ray in the high-definition DVD format wars. A HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 can be bought separately to the console.
Group marketing manager for Xbox hardware Albert Penello said Microsoft would have to consider introducing a Blu-ray accessory in the event that HD-DVD failed.
"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," he said.
Interesting.
The 4.7gb DVD capacity will start to limit the 360 soon, unless something is done.
360 games use DVD DL, which actually has 7GB of space for game content.
But your point is sound. I sorta doubt it will happen tho, with any drive probably only being used for media playback imo, like the HD DVD add on.
Dual disc games are probably more likely
I don't think Microsoft have any allegiance either way, they probably just choose HD DVD initially because it was the opposite was sony.
Thats the thing about using an external drive i guess. It
A. Gives customers the choice to not buy it at all, therefore not charging them for something they do not want or need.
B. Offers the flexiblity to go over to Blu Ray if HD DVD becomes obsolete.
Microsoft haven't made bazillions of dollars by making dumb decisions.
If MS release a Blu-Ray drive and 360 games come out on Blu-Ray discs, I will buy it.

Not soon. It's already happening.
360 is not a long-term console. It will have a shelf life of about another 18 months imo.

The way people are cheering for a particular format as if its a football team is really quite disturbing. Its not often consumers sit around and cheer as a monopoly forms.
The best thing for consumers would have been for both formats to get equal marketshare... then dual players would be prominent and the two formats would have to try and beat each other for price on disc sales.
