With the emergence of our young defence there has been quite a few positives down back. One of those is Matty 'The Iron Fist of Justice' Warnock.

He is pretty much the General of our backline these days. (with Rivers)
Here is 5 reasons why I love the guy.

1. Protects our young players and midfeilders - loves to fly the flag when our players have copped some unsociable treatment.

2. Punch Punch and Punch - He loves the spoil even when he needs to mark sometimes but I am more than okay with that. He understands his limits and does his job with nothing too fancy.

3. He has that mungrel in him or what I like to call "c*nt factor" - when I see a fight break out at the MCG I can honestly say I bet that Moloney or Warnock started it... and I'm usually right!

4. He has been on our list a while and almost been on the out at points so he understands how hard you have to work to cut it at this level.

5. Kicking has improved by a mile.. he still isn't confident and loves the handball but he makes safe decsions and can execute by foot these days when he has to.

All in all he is a good old fashioned full back and is by far our most improved player over the last 3 years. Keep up the Top Work Warnock!!!

Absolutely. Warnock has become the number one defender in our team.

He is 24-25 so he's not old.

Warnock's the first choice as he's got the pace and strength to take on the strong KPP.

Garland is the first choice to take the athletic types in Franklin, Riewodlt.

Frawley can do both very well and play small.

Martin can do a great job but imo is fourth in line and will need another bow to his string. (Ruck?)

Rivers. Still a quality player but he does get burnt for pace. Not overly strong either. Against 95% of the comp, he'll do a fine job but I think he can be exposed.

It's good to see that we finally have a reliable and consistent fullback! Even in our good years we had a defence full of spuds. I'm referring to the Lambs, the Nichos, the Carrolls... those kind of guys.

I see Warnock, Garland, Frawley and Rivers all having a spot in the backline for the next few years. They're all talls, but Frawley specialises in shutting down the mid sized guys, Warnock takes the gorillas, Garland takes the athletic types and Rivers is one of the best in the comp at covering loose players and chopping the ball off (the general).

I see Martin being a second ruck and third tall up forward, but filling in the backline when needed (i.e. against St Kilda or really any team with two big tall marking forwards).

For the smaller backmen, I'd love to keep Wheels for next season and have him play alongside Cheney (I want Grimes in the guts)

I agree...Grimes in the middle would provide some much needed run.

It's a very tall back half, however with Garland and Frawley being versatile talls, it could work. Getting Garland back in there will be important, we have been stretched at times this year.

As for Warnock, he has been terrific. Last year he was simply Robbie's brother, he's starting to make a name for himself now; just at the right time. You know you will get a honest performance, which is all you can ask for. He is a much improved version of big Al Nicholson.

I think earlier this year people regarded him as one of the inform full backs in the comp. In the next 5 years he will be the best full back in the comp. :thumbsu:

He isn't anything special, but he is quite reliable and has good size and strength. That's all you can ask for after the horror run of defenders we've had lately. He does the job most weeks, no frills, no fuss.
