carlton offering pick 24 and young wa player( browne, bower, blackwell, armfield, benjamin)??
but fremantle declined..want pick 6

lawyers will be brought in trying to break the stalemate

interest for seaby has waned due to being 3rd inline after mcintosh warnock

Am thinking the lawyer will say "game, set, match, Carlton" Pick 24 and he is yours......:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

If he is best available - the club has to take him. If Watts is there with pick 3 and says he does not want to go to WA - bit of bad luck ...your the best player in the ND/PSD you get taken.

At 21 if it is a choice between Shaun McKernan or Warnock and my club has a need for a 2nd ruckman - I know who I want them to take.

If he still wants to go home in 2010 ...I think his trade value will increase with more game time (hell he may even want to stay) and we get one more year on our investment in him.

Having said that - chances of him getting past Melb at 19 would be next to nil.

Way to almost guarantee that legal moves result on the basis of 'restraint of trade'. ;)

What a total waste of energy and resources this is threatening to become. If we more than likely hadn't already reached an understanding of sorts with Robbie it would be very tempting to take our pick and walk away and leave it to the PSD.

This is a ridiculous statement. It would be like Freo offering a pick to one of the SA teams for a player and including an SA player (could be Schammer????, could be Pavlich????) these players are very far apart value wise.

I think you might be confusing me with someone else there, BB. To the best of my knowledge, I have never used that argument. If you can find a quote from me, then I'll apologise.
My apologies if that wasn't you.
You betcha I'm a little nervous. I'd hate to lose him for nothing, which is a possibility. I happen to believe a trade will get done, that doesn't make me any less nervous, though. That's just my nature.
With the AFL mediator coming in I'd be getting even more nervous.

Again, you can read it both ways.....but my take is this.

AFL and the clubs don't want free agency.......the players do.

AFL wouldn't be mediating if Warnock was happy to go to a number of clubs.....i.e. Dees. This to me backs up Icke's statement that Warnock has selected the Blues and Freo aren't happy because they can't take the better offer from the Dees.

This amounts to restraint of trade. AFLPA will argue, imagine anyone in their current job, leaving that job, but where they go to next is dictated by their old employer.......would never happen.
This is their arguement for free agency........if the Warnock thing keeps going the way it is it fuels the AFLPA's push for free agency.

The AFL don't want that.

You don't want that.

Imagine losing Pav for nothing next year.

AFL will apply their fair value test (developed after the Veale deal - don't ask me the details, but it does exist........and they will apply it to the out of contract players taken by GC17 to know which round clubs take their compensatory picks).......and the test AFAIK takes into account, years of service (few), games played (few) and probably some measure of performance......

I can't see the AFL compelling the Blues based on this to offer much more.;)

If Melbourne trump Carlton with either pick 17 or 19 for Warnock, the only way Carlton can win Warnock back is to offer a second pick or a player in addition to pick 24. Unless Freo are stupid (I think they are making a stand this year under Harvey) they wont take a player who can't make the grade (Blackwell), or a fringe player (Armfield/Bentick type) that will be fringe player at Freo also...why bother clogging up their list.

If we have to offer 24 plus our 3rd or 4th rounder I'd be dead set against it. If we had to offer 24 plus a young player that is on the up, e.g. Browne, I'd be dead set against it as well.

Our issue is that the Dees can offer pick 17 or 19. We don't have it so we are in a hard spot. And unlike other Carlton supporters, I don't think Warnock would 100% rule out Melbourne even if he does prefer Carlton.

Our options are:

  • Pick 24 for Warnock and leave it at that (Yes)
  • Pick 24 and 3rd rounder as sweetener (NO)
  • Pick 24 plus a fringe squad player (Yes - but highly doubt it)
  • Pick 24 plus an ontraded pick over 50 from trade of a squad player (Yes)
  • Pick 24 plus an ontraded pick under 40 from trade of a squad player (No)
  • Keep pick 24 and draft White for 1 year on performance based contract (YES - cheap option + potential 10 year player)
  • Offer 4th rounder for Seaby (YES - but doubt it would work)
  • Melbourne get him for pick 17 (OH well, we have Hampson who also could be an elite ruckman)

If Melbourne trump Carlton with either pick 17 or 19 for Warnock, the only way Carlton can win Warnock back is to offer a second pick or a player in addition to pick 24.

Dees are not an issue at all, other than PSD.

If Warnock hadn't knocked the Dees back the AFL wouldn't need to be mediating. He would be a Demon by now for 17 or 19.

The AFL are mediating because Warnock has said he ONLY wants to go to the Blues, and we won't up our bid to get Freo to sign.

Based on the new "fair value test" developed for the GC17, which I;m sure the mediator is itching to test drive:
The compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), on field performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience.

I can't see Warnock ticking more than the "youth" box.
Not an early pick, not on big bucks, not putting up dominant perfromances, even at WAFL let alone AFL.

AFL will say pick 24 is not only good value, but probably over the odds.:thumbsu:

He'll go into the PSD not the ND if a trade can't be organised. Too much lottery in the ND. Melbourne use 92% of their Cap because they have no money. Put a big price on his head in the first year and Melbourne's Cap doesn't come into it. They've got no money.

Surely Freo wouldn't re-draft him, wasting a pick at alot higher price for a bloke that was there in the first place but doesn't want to be there now. Really get the best out of him....not! How stupid would that be. You be a laughing stock of the AFL........again! I'd laugh for a week.

The guys played 20 games, is no star, certainly not a first rounder. Mediator probably be lucky to say a 2nd rounder. Take what you can. At least you can use a decent pick. Doesn't worry us. Only Freo can lose from this.

Amid another constipated day of inaction, Carlton and Fremantle appeared poised to today become the first clubs to enter mediation in a bid to resolve the stalled talks over ruckman Robert Warnock.

The Blues and Dockers met again last night to attempt to facilitate a deal, but with Carlton unwilling to trade its first-round pick they are troubled to find a pick better than their second-round pick (No. 24) to offer the Dockers.

Melbourne, which retains a keen interest in Warnock is understood to be prepared to trade pick 19 for the ruckman, whose brother plays at the Demons. The Dockers ruckman, however, is not believed to be keen moving to the Demons.

Fremantle will be compelled to attend mediation if it is sought by Carlton and the player's manager. But they would not be bound by the mediator's decision.

It would be the first time a mediator has been used in trade week since it was introduced two years ago. The mediator is drawn from a panel of available lawyers with football experience.

A deal will get done, its could be 24 and what we get for Bentick, but something has to give in the next 2 days.

Freo have blinked.:o

I'd say it's all but over.

"When you think about it, Fremantle are asking for an earlier second-round pick. We can't get it. Melbourne wants his services and they have got two of them; West Coast have two and they won't trade with us; Port Adelaide have got one and Essendon have got one.

All this posturing over:
"So we're looking for something below [pick No.24]."

really is:
"we want something between 19 and 23..........and we have 21."

I'm sure the AFL will see your blocking of Warnock's move to his preferred club over this as being reasonable .............and of course the decision will be binding........just not officially.;)

Tip. Don't piss off Adrian Anderson and Vlad.
