This one crept up on me. I started on Friday night and have spent most of the weekend playing it and really enjoying it. It's on Gamepass for Xbox and PC folks.

They're removed some of the more nuanced elements from Wasteland 2 which I was worried was making it a little more casual but it's far from easy. I've been trying to min-max my party and early on spec'd heavy into assault weapons and sidearms, as well as some side skills like Mechanics, Nerd Stuff and Weird Science, but I've already been locked out of so many ways to complete or even begin quests as well as some dialog because there is no way you can fit all the skills to cover evert situation into your 6 member party. I'm also starting to regret I didn't invest into Big Guns earlier as I'm starting to run into some tanky enemies that need a more brutal approach. It just means I have to come back later but the fun of playing these sorts of things blind without any guides. There is a really cool sound track that kicks in during some important gun fights too.

For anyone unfamiliar with Wasteland, it's a lot like Fallout 1 and 2 which is no surprise when you look at the DNA of the developer. It's a pretty fun way to pass the time until next gen if anyone into real RPGs is looking for something new to play.

That's good to read! Especially how you're already thinking about how you'll build your characters next time; sounds like it will be fun to play a few times over, doing things differently.

Only did the tutorial level last night and I'm using the gamepad so it's a little confusing to control - but loved it. Great character creation, looks pretty nice and liked the sense of humour. Looking forward to getting stuck into it over the coming weeks.

Good time to come out as well with BG3 Early Access being delayed.

I was caught out by some pretty high lockpicking and first aid checks early on. I could just bring another character with those skills but then I'd be lacking something like Hard Ass or Kiss Ass (have already used these dialogue skill checks a fair bit), Nerd Stuff, Weird Science and Mechanics. My most "useless" member has high Toaster Repair which sounds ridiculous but so much good stuff can be found in toasters. So I'm kind of trying to level up some of the missing skills on current party members at the cost of good min-maxing which will probably come back to bite me in other ways later.

Are the first 2 worth playing first?

Nah. First one is from the 80s or something (I've never played it either) and as much as the second is worth playing it's not really necessary. There are references to characters from 2 but it does a really good job of getting you up to speed in the opening half hour or so.

download done last night, I will chuck this on tonight for a play

So it is a turn based game, right?

Combat is turn based. Similar to XCom but you entire team has a turn at the same time.

One tip I'm offering anyone starting out that I wish I did from the start - make sure one character is spec'd into Big Guns early, and another Lockpicking. Argh!!

so is it free roam until you get to a battle scene or is every movement turn based?

Free roam to adventure etc. You can initiate combat too if you want. If you get within an enemy's range they will start but their whole team will go. That's why it's best to start the combat with a sniper or something to get your team into position. The IGN review used an example about a hostage where you can start the combat and the hostage gets killed, or you let the enemy retreat where they set up an ambush. Let's just say there is another obvious option lol. Pew Pew.

Oh yeah, there is also friendly fire. Just an FYI lol.

Gave it a little run through last night

Only got up to the base so probably played for 45 mins

Not too bad, I reckon I'll like this

How do I get the first attack in a battle though?

Just attack first. Not sure when using a controller but on PC I can just hover over the attack icon and it will create a red ring showing showing how far I can attack. I usually pick my character with a sniper who has longer range, I roughly get my party into position or plan where they will attack and take cover, then I nudge my sniper into range. It will automatically deduct action points from that character but I'll get the first turn.

yeah I think I might start back from the beginning again and pay more attention to the pop up instructions/alerts

Plus I accidentally started the game with the custom rangers, I want to go back and set them up differently and potentially not get them all except 1 killed early on

I invested in a few more big guns and equipped them to more of my party last night despite the skill penalties. Definitely recommend! One room was giving me grief previously so I left it to come later. I decided to try it with my new set up with big guns. I worked out my plan of attack early, where I would take cover and who would flank from which directions. A few enemies were grouped together so I opened with a rocket launcher which took one out and weakened a few others which I picked off one by one as my party were taking their place. One has a shotgun so that was perfect to take down a few weak and close together enemies. Machine guns are deadly and shredded the tanky enemy that was previously giving me the most issues. Then I've got another guy with an assault rifle that has a chance to blind which rendered another enemy almost useless for the next couple turns. I turned it into a 3-4 turn fight. Ideally I'd love to start again and min-max properly but I'm just going to learn from it and move on.

Enjoying the updates! Have to say you've shown a fair bit of mental toughness - I'm embarrassed to tell you how many times I've restarted. Even now, only one guy has points in big guns, no one has toaster points...

Generally only play it for an hour at a time, and by the time I load it back up I've thought of some other way I'd rather play. Need to have a good 5 hour session, figure that will be far enough in to stop myself restarting.

I want to ditch my toaster guy, he adds nothing else to the party but has fixed 3 high level toasters lol.

how is this difficulty wise? also how is the RNG?

i liked the idea of xcom but really struggled with it and its bullshit missing a %99 shot 5 times in a row. gave up pretty early.

I have been playing a few other fantasy tactical games tho which I have had a better time with

It can be game breaking if you don't balance your party right, but that's the game and the fun of working things out. I think you will work that out fairly early though. I realised my party wasn't very well built or equipped after a couple hours and I was tempted to restart, but instead battled on and now that I'm getting it back on track I'm coping far better. I haven't had many dramas missing high percentage shots except for when I equip weapons on a character without the skill to use them. That usually suffers a hit chance penalty but it's really transparent what it is. Wasteland 2 was tedious in some of its rpg elements but this one is a little simpler in that regard. Early on it's not as overwhelming as it may seem as you're somewhat restricted by where you can travel.

I couldn't get into xcom at all but about 3 hours in I am really enjoying this

Good storyline and places to explore. Customising your characters is cool too

Glad I gave it a go

I was getting so frustrated with Dr Smiles last night. I just couldn't get enough damage or him or the adds to start getting the fight level. After stuffing around with loadouts and my strategy again it all changed with an overcharge crit with the frozen ferret launcher (lol). I can't stress enough how important it is to have a diverse range of weapon users, especially big guns!!!! Big guns will level a room and weaken everything in a single turn. Then you use the members with assault rifles, small arms etc to finish them off one by one. Some of the Big Gun perks seem to be the best for debuffing enemies too and I wish I had some of them earlier.

Also I'm not sure if I should be killing some of these named enemies like Dr Smiles as I can open dialogue with them, pass a skill check or two but still ultimately end in combat. Keen to know if anyone else with a party using different skills to me has different outcomes.

grabbed it friday and put in a few hours over the weekend, enjoying it so far. think i've bungled a few things early but dont want to restart.

started with the "techies" pair. currently lacking a brawler & sniper. hopefully there is a companion with one of these i can grab not too far in
Yeah there are defiantly few instances early on where I reckon I have made the wrong decision(s). I even restarted after the first time I played the first mission and just arrived in Colorado

I've put maybe 4 or 5 hours into it. I'm currently up to Little Vegas. I am really enjoying it and loving the Fallout type of environment

How far into are you?

This kept me up until sunrise yesterday, loving it so far. Can see myself restarting and min-maxing to get party composition just right.
Surprise rocket attacks and one shot snipers here we come.
I wish there was a toggle for Left Shift so I can see containers all the time though.
