Agree

Tim's a better kick, although Jobe's kicking is OK.

Gee, Jobe would be about the best player in the AFL if he had Tim's speed.

Jobe IS the best player in the AFL.

Yeah, how a side performs under a captain isn't as cut and dry as "they made x amount of finals".

I don't think we've seen a better year from a captain of Essendon in 5-10 years; us bending over on a weekly basis after Round 14 shouldn't reflect on Jobe.
Jobe had an outstanding year. The club he led didn't.
Tim had both, under his 'reign'.

Hopefully next year he can still deliver those "You come with me" performances like those against Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, except his teammates are actually good enough to do so.
We can all get behind that.

2 in a row then another one as a bit-part player. Not much to ask?

Yes, but Tim was in a much better side.

Not for his whole career... 1977-1982 were pretty lean, as was some of the latter parts of his career.

Some facts for you youngsters :)
- Tim was a genuine star from day 1 - some of his performances as a 16 & 17 year old were ridiculous...
- Tim was Brownlow favourite in 1980, when he was turned 19 mid year.
- Four time B&F against guys like Daniher, Madden et al
- In 1989, the Sun ran a double page spread ranking the two best players in the game head to head. T Watson vs G Ablett. Tim out ranked him by half a vote if I recall correctly. How ironic that those two legends didn't win Brownlows, but their sons did..!
- Tim's 1989 was every bit as good as Jobe's year this year.
- Tim had 1986 & 1987 wiped out due to his knee injury
- I love them both....

It is really hard to quantify just how good a player Tim was.
The closest player I can think of today is Patrick Dangerfield. Think about the year he had this year, and Tim was doing that as an 18 year old, and continued to do so for 10 years.

Say what?

Let me expand on that for you.

Watson is a better player than Beams, Cloke, Pendlebury, Swan, Sidebottom, O'Brien, Maxwell, Didak, Jolly, Dawes......

Clearer?

Dane Swan but he can kick.
Huge man for a midfielder. Especially back in those days, guys were probably an inch or two shorter & 3-4kg lighter.

And that makes him the best player in the AFL?

No.

This does:

Look he's a superstar, no doubting that, i just hate it when people start proclaiming the Brownlow medalist to be the best play in the comp, you can think he's the best player in the comp, you're probably not far wrong, but don't use that pathetic award to justify it. Just IMO.

He had his first real full standout season in 2012, but still a long, long way to go. Five more A grade seasons and he might get close.

Hey HAD; I'm about to go find my post re: Watson > Franklin..... care to join me? :D

Jade are you taking the piss?

Am I taking the piss? No, I wasn't when I first said it, and I'm not now either.

Only difference is now I have a shiny blue and gold medal to point to, which makes the argument a lot more weighty.

It is fitting reward for great players and carries great prestige.

There are far too many issues with the Brownlow for it to be considered any measure of who the best players in the league are.

I am one who rates Tim Watson better than James Hird - Not by much - They had the same characteristics but Tim was a better kick.

At the end of the day we are blessed to have Jobe - Never thought he would be at a similar level to his Dad.

Jade has to be trolling and/or taking the piss.

On which count? That Jobe is the game's best current player, or that he is better than Franklin?

Jobe's breakout season was 2006, and he has steadily gotten better since then.
I will always think that if Sheedy had given him more game time in 06, he would have won the B&F, & not finished second to Lucas. I SMS'd that to SEN the day after the count, and Andy Maher read it out & agreed - Tim remained silent :)

He has polled pretty well in the Brownlow over the past three years...

Much has been made of his improved fitness over the summer of 05/06 - not only did it help his game, but it also reduced his injuries. He suffered a lot of soft tissue injuries in his first three years, because his 'soft' body just couldn't cope.....

On which count? That Jobe is the game's best current player, or that he is better than Franklin?
Moreso the second, but both, kinda.

- That the Brownlow = the best player
- That Watson is better than Franklin

Nuff nuffs believe the former, nobody should believe the latter.
