Did we perhaps see the end of an era today as twin brothers walked off the ground at the Waca, victorious, but still deflated?
Have we seen the Waugh twins for the last time in this country - and how appropiate an ending was it in terms of performance by the two.
Mark - Flashy, completely in control until a dumb shot costs him his wicket
Steve - Stubborn gritty and holding the team together with a solid 40.
As there careers have gone
Although, I don't think we have seen the end of them in test level, one has to think that they have now run their race in the one day game.
This was their chances to prove that they should be going to the World Cup, and unfortunately during this one day series, both have failed miserably. One fifty each from the matches played between them will no doubt hurt their chances.
Steve was unable to lead the side into the final of a 3 team competition, how is he expected to lead a side into the finals against the rest of the world? Mark has had his chances at the top of the order, and at 38 by the time next summer comes along, looks to be past it.
Its time for new leadership and a host of new players in the one day team. Warne seems past his best, but has shown to be an innovative captain in previous seasons, Gilchrist is an obvious replacement, but would he want the pressure of opening the innings, wicket keeping and captaincy? I'd doubt it.
It might be time to throw up Ricky Ponting into the captaincy, and perhaps give the opening job to Langer and Hayden with Gilchrist at 7.
Perhaps the Aussie World Cup side could look something like this
Langer
Hayden
Ponting (C)
Martin (VC)
Bevan
Lehmann
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Bichel
McGrath
Gillepsie (12th)
Then perhaps the rest of the squad could include the likes of Watson, Katich and Higgs.
Thoughts?
