Did we perhaps see the end of an era today as twin brothers walked off the ground at the Waca, victorious, but still deflated?

Have we seen the Waugh twins for the last time in this country - and how appropiate an ending was it in terms of performance by the two.

Mark - Flashy, completely in control until a dumb shot costs him his wicket

Steve - Stubborn gritty and holding the team together with a solid 40.

As there careers have gone

Although, I don't think we have seen the end of them in test level, one has to think that they have now run their race in the one day game.

This was their chances to prove that they should be going to the World Cup, and unfortunately during this one day series, both have failed miserably. One fifty each from the matches played between them will no doubt hurt their chances.

Steve was unable to lead the side into the final of a 3 team competition, how is he expected to lead a side into the finals against the rest of the world? Mark has had his chances at the top of the order, and at 38 by the time next summer comes along, looks to be past it.

Its time for new leadership and a host of new players in the one day team. Warne seems past his best, but has shown to be an innovative captain in previous seasons, Gilchrist is an obvious replacement, but would he want the pressure of opening the innings, wicket keeping and captaincy? I'd doubt it.

It might be time to throw up Ricky Ponting into the captaincy, and perhaps give the opening job to Langer and Hayden with Gilchrist at 7.

Perhaps the Aussie World Cup side could look something like this

Langer
Hayden
Ponting (C)
Martin (VC)
Bevan
Lehmann
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Bichel
McGrath
Gillepsie (12th)

Then perhaps the rest of the squad could include the likes of Watson, Katich and Higgs.

Thoughts?

hopefully. Sounds bad but they are both past it. Mark Taylor was quickly dropped fro mthe one day team when he stopped performing at that level....Steve Waugh hasnt performed in the one day side this series, and his captaincy has been fairly pathetic at times too...its time for the ACB to be consistent and drop Steve like they did to Tubby.

story of Mark Waughs career really. Altho he has had a top notch career....he ALWAYS throws away his wicket with a dumb shot. I remember back in 92/93 when i think every one day game of the entire series he got run out. He always looks set, then has a blood rush and trys to belt the ball out the park and misjudges and gets out.

Steve - Stubborn gritty and holding the team together with a solid 40.

i have no idea why he chose to bowl himself when he basically hasnt bowled for about 4 years.

plus the fact steve waugh often slows down our run rate when he comes in to bat.

i dont think Langer or Hayden are 1 day players. Too slow. Hayden has never performed at one day level. Langer...hmmm, hasnt done THAT much before. I think we should drop Brett Lee as well. Altho he can be a handy lower order batsmen...his bowling is pathetic. I dont know why people percieve him to be so great. Quick does not equal great. He is one dimensional and has a very bad economy rate in most games. Gets thumped around the ground often. Get rid of him and find another quick who has more control over their deliveries.

I think it may be the end for Steve Waugh, but I would like to see Mark continue in ODIs. He had a stellar year in 2001 and looked to be getting back to some terrific form today. I wouldn't write him off yet....

Shane Warne is the real worry for Australia. Yet again, he has come on to bowl and allowed the opposition to dominate him and not breakthrough with any wickets. His selection in the one-day team must really come under some scrutiny. It has been a long time since he has performed consistently in ODIs.

Great to see Lehmann have a great comeback match! It really makes you wonder why he has not been in there from the start...

Brett Lee might have saved his arse with that 50 today, which was great to watch, especially when he tonked Donald all around the park (jesus, didn't he act like a prick towards Makhaya Ntini when they were fielding, so he got what he deserved).

But, Steve Waugh and especially Damien Martyn (fancy hesitating like that when Ponting got run out, he looked like being the guy that was going to get us that big total, and he run him out, and he took too long to get his 29, what an idiot, he is a liability on one day level) shouldn't set thier hopes for going to South Africa for the World Cup next year, and Mark Waugh, Andy Symonds, Ricky Ponting and Ian Harvey are on shaky gound as well.

But, as I said previously, I put this one day failure squrely on the ACB, for not getting rid of the dead wood when it was required, and I hope that this bitter lesson (not only for thier pride, but for thier coffers) won't be repeated come 2003.

.

Donald always gets stuck into the fielders if they make a slight fumble, yet he's probably SA's 2nd worse fieldsman.Dippy will always be #1.

He was having a shot at Makhaya Ntini for having a lack of commitment, which is piss poor, becasue he's (Allan Donald) is an ordinary fieldsman, and Makhaya gives 100% every time he plays, but then again (like Glenn McGrath) Allan Donald has always been a surly bastard.:D

Langer and Bichel?

No chance of either of them being there irrespective of current form.
