Butterss in the paper this morning said that they used to make a profit from a crowd of 14,000 at Waverley, and it takes 26,000 to make a profit at Colonial.

All Saints games at Colonial are currently underwritten by the AFL but that deal runs out next year.

I love watching games at Colonial and hated Waverley, but you have got to wonder when the money the AFL gets from selling Waverley is going to be exceeded by the money that clubs like St Kilda lose by playing at Colonial.

Butterss also said that the Saints were looking at playing interstate sides at Moorabbin again.

Wouldnt moorabbin need a big facelift to be on par with current AFL standards?

Would be nice to see suburban grounds used again!

It was never the classiest ground around, but yeah you would think a lot of work would need to be done.

hehehe is the gasometer still around? I haven't been down to arden St for a long long time!

My Uncle is a North Supporter and when i first arrived in Australia I used to watch North a bit then i came to Sydney with my parents in 1980.

I picked the Swans becasue in Argentina Red and White was River Plate.

Unfortunately the gasometer as well as VFL footy at Arden St is a long distant memory.

:(

Should have been heritage listed!

What did they build..high-rise apartments?

Just like in Sydney...all our past is being sacrificed for High Rise trendy apartments that don't seem to fill.

That's sad.

Sub standard oval with sub standard facilities

Perhaps the Crows should play at Prospect Oval

bloody stupid

True.

We have a new lakeside oval in Sydney..no stands but hey getting there by bus is not a problem! :D

Actually for those who dont know it's located across the road from the SCG and is in withing a busy bust route and sometime busy terminal.

The swans use it for training.

Last i heard it was going to be turned in some kind of Waverly Garden estate. Housing for the well off..yah?

Stand to be corrected.

Unlike yourself, I loved watching games at Waverley - I would often ride my motorcycle up the road from Sale to see the Doggies play their occasional match there. When I did arrive, I could get in easily, find any old seat I wanted, and watched in the freezing cold. Hell, I was used to the cold anyway.

I never found the parking to be an issue when I later took my young children to the ground by car. I just parked a little up the road at the Safeway carpark, and it was no more difficult (in fact, I would say a damn lot easier) than parking at Princes Park.

Yes, the costs of being a tenant at Colonial will hasten the demise of a couple of clubs, or ripen them for a move interstate just as the league always wanted. I said this before the Doggies even moved there, and while very happy with the amenities and location, I would sacrifice both to have my club live on.

I don't advocate the clubs going back to those old deathtraps, but the pure greed that pervades everything that is the AFL these days, from executives to players and their managers, have forced the AFL and clubs to increase their revenue, and now we have cooked our own geese.

Behold, the new AFL.

Cheers.

Speaking about jumpers. Rooboy, I know this might irk you, as it suggests that painful concept called relocation, but a cross town rivalry between Sydney and the Roos has all the makings of a classic. Even the fullness of the colours--BLOOD REDS vs ROYAL BLUES (a la Liverpool vs Everton, Redcoats vs Bluecoats in the AMerican Revoltionary War etc. etc.) has all the trappings of a great rivalry. I am done, you can hammer me now. ;)

I soooo want a cross town rivalry..it would be great for the code in Sydney.

Just like River v Boca in Argentina.

we tried... Sydney fans just don't understand the concept of going to an away game up there... anyway that is another subject... and we should leave it for another thread...
