Wayne Carey AFL assistant coaxh

Hi All. Do people think Wayne Carey will be back as an AFL assistant coach next year or soon? Personally I think Carey would be ideal in a part time forwards coach role like Brereton
at GWS. I think his football brain is wasted not being at an AFL club and with his media career/life going well the timing could be right soon. Thoughts?

Nah, good comparison re: Dermie - don't think he will go down the path of full-time assistant coach - but definitely would be of huge benefit to a team as a part-time forward coach

If so, I don't think it'd actually be a woeful appointment. His prick acts were undeniably prick acts, and his "I never got Christmas presents" excuse was so absurd it was amazing. But plenty of people call him the best of all time, and even if you take away those blue-and-white glasses or have a view pre-1990s, he's still in the top .5% of players ever.

I remember kind of wanting him to have a go at Freo when Connolly was sacked. Thought the players might respect him purely through his ability and experiences.

No doubt that he is one of the greatest ever. I just don't think he has the passion to have a full time roll at a club and his support of North resembles a casual fan rather than a rusted on one. Personally I don't want him back at North in a formal capacity and many others feel the same.

FWIW he worked with Cloke and Hawkins and look what they became.
If he can work with Black, Tarrant and Daw then Id love it.

I doubt he would. An individual with his profile and standing in the game would only consider serious assistant coaching as a stepping stone to becoming a senior coach and no club is going to touch Carey with a 10 foot pole in that respect.

If he does do any coaching it will be similar to what Dermott does but I wouldn't even call that assistant coaching. It's very small time, getting paid not much at all, and probably more effective at boosting media profile and justifying their role for the money they get paid as special comments guy.

Cant see why not. He has done his penance for his crimes and has a good reputation off the small amount of coaching work he has done so far. Would probably make a good assistant coach.

Great players don't necessarily mean great coaches. Don't think he's the right fit for a full time assistant role. I couldn't see him playing second fiddle to anyone, if he was ever gonna coach it would be a head coach role imo.

If there was a rule for knobs being banned from coaching we'd lose half of all coaches in the AFL overnight.

From the sounds of it he has had some success working with forwards in the past. Perhaps a couple of clubs might want to get him down to help our with some of their younger prospects.

He did a bit of "work" at Collingwood a few years ago. But I was of the understanding that he hardly ever turned up, so Collingwood told him where to go.
