On behalf of all poster's here on the Carlton forum I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Dick Pratt, posting as lou73.

I didn't realise our little forum was being used by those in power, but it's great to have a line direct to the top.

I'm sure WH is shaking in his boots.

I'm sure your just an idiot

i actually think it would be hard to go wrong with our picks this year....as long as he takes kruezer he is safe...these i think are the contenders for our picks

1- kruezer, cotchin
36- robbie tarrant, arrowsmith, sandilands or a young KP backmen
46- same as above and maybe a young forward or middy..
i think we should get tarrannt coz hes a forward/ chf and we will need some in the future ..mckay is a good backmen wif talent sandilands is a good middy...the interesting one is arrowsmith..great wingman who can get forawrd and kick multiple goals...as shown in the tac cup GF when he kicked 5 playing on the wing...3 in a half....

70's- ready made player...collard or someone like that

Hughesy is pretty safe at Princes Park. And you really have to give the kids a few years to really make an accurate judgement on how astute their selection was.

Totally agree with this. It amazes me and frustrates how quick some posters are to write off our kids. FFS they are drafted as 17/18 year old kids and have to be given at least afew years to develop. Very few will make an impact straight away like Murphy. Looking at last years top picks apart from GIbbs, Gumbleton only played towards the end of the season. Hanson played a few games at the start then went to the seconds. Leunberger didn't play to the end of the year. DOEs that mean that any of those guys are duds? Who knows they may turn out ot be dissapointments but it's way to early to decide that yet. Boak and Selwood were impact players but it probably helped they played on very good teams. I don't think our last few drafts have been bad drafts. Even Russell i am not prepared to write off yet although he does need to lift his game over the next year or two.

He's right though. Until a few players outside of number 1 picks actually step up and does something Hughes is on very shaky ground. His first draft can almost be written off as a failure at this point. He might have some good excuses for that (crap draft, can't predict injuries, incompetent youth management) but excuses don't last forever.

Kennedy and Bower?
Hampson and Anderson?

You're right, ealry on was crap, but the last two years at least have looked fine.

As with any one at an AFL club, they need to keep performing to keep their job.

Really? Kennedy is gone and wasn't setting the world on fire when he was here, Bower's efforts so far are just a pass mark for pick 20 and Jake Edwards is looking incresingly unlikely to make it at this early stage (playing in the twos late during his second year at the club is not a good sign). Things can change around but at this stage the year isn't looking great although Ryan Jackson looks the goods.

Edwards I agree.
Kennedy with his opportunities was showing (towards the end) what he always was going to. Hard work across HF and an increasing ability to take grabs and kick goals. He was never going to be a star.
Still wouldn't mark him down as a cross against Hughes.
Bower about what we expect of pick 20 KPP in his second year - still not a cross for Hughes.

I'm not arguing he's been exceptional and picked superbly, but I don't think he's been crap either.

With picks 4, 20 and 36 you'd expect more to come out of those picks than two contributors when its a good draft. That's a big F in my book.

Hughes hasn't been able to draft a young guy that can come in straight from the get-go and do the job (unless it's a number 1 pick). Why is it that if you were to write down an under 21 AFL team on paper we'd only get 1 to possibly 2 players in the team with all the picks we've had?

His drafting in the super draft last year seems to be good, but previousely he has failed dismally.

I'm personally not a fan. Others may disagree with me, but from what i've seen he isn't the best of them thats for sure.

jeez u are harsh gandaal and so are the others who are so quick to judge. Kennedy's debvelopment was going along fine. Big men always take longer to develop. He is on track and i am sad to lose him. What more did u want from Bowyer in his second year? He must be 19? 20? At least he has made his debut. It's way to early to write him off. What about Grigg from last year? Oh wait let me guess, b/c he didn't set the world on fire in year 1 he is a dud right?. How about Hampson? could be a real star i reckon. How about giving the guys some time b4 handing out the F's. I think at present he gets an incomplete grade but if i had to grade him i would say the 05 draft is on target to be a c + to a B. could end up being higher when we look back in a few years time.

That is the problem I have with a lot people's expectations. Kids very rarely can do this and it can take years for kid to develop.

I remember Scott Burns talking about this and the pressure kids are under now and how he is glad he isn't coming into the game now.

This is why you should read through a thread before commenting on individual posts. My post was made in a wider context and wasn't a permanent condemnation of Bower or even Edwards. I've still got hope that Bower will end up as a gun player because he has all the tools to do it, and Edwards may yet turn it around. But if things turn out like Bluebear suggests then that draft would be a huge failure despite how great Marc Murphy turns out to be.

I couldn't care less about Kennedy anymore, time to move on, but players of his type are going to struggle to make it in the future in my opinion as contests become more and more rare, while speed and athletism become more and more important. If he becomes anything more than a contributor with the occasional good game I'll be surprised.
