Players in limbo as Eagles scrap WAFL side
West Coast has confirmed they won’t field a WAFL side next year, with the fate of the Eagles’ surplus and developing players unclear given that no existing club is willing to align with them.

The West Coast Eagles will continue to field a stand-alone team in the WAFL competition after an agreement was reached between with the Club, West Australian Football Commission and WAFL clubs for season 2022.
West Coast will be retained as the 10th team in the competition, with the Eagles to host five home-and-away games at Mineral Resources Park next season.
WAFC Chairman Hon Wayne Martin conceded that changes to the current model needed to be made for a more competitive West Coast outfit, particularly given the impact COVID-19 has had on the AFL alignment
“From a Football Commission perspective, our desire has always been for West Coast to have a stand-alone side, providing the integrity of the WAFL competition is maintained and it supports the development of AFL-listed players,” Martin said.
“Having a competitive West Coast Eagles team in our State League continues to present the exciting opportunity to enhance our competition, both on and off the field.”
“Clearly, the global pandemic has created a need for some change within the agreement and clubs have agreed on a number of allowances for the West Coast WAFL team moving forward.”
“We want the Eagles to be a part of the WAFL competition as long as their AFL team exists, and these new terms allow for a sustained participation in the state league competition.”
“I want to acknowledge both West Coast and the WAFL clubs for their support in working through the new agreement for the betterment of the WAFL competition.”
