v Melb

the 3rd qtr melb kicked 7.5 to 2.0

but the rest of the game was about 9 goals each.

Just struggling to stop momentum which is understandable when you can get the ball.

some signs though
That must have been the qtr that Turnover Turkey Tom Coles turnovers cost us 4 goals

LOL @ buying a plane.

NBA teams can do that because they have rosters of 12-15 players and are billion dollar organisations.

AFL clubs operate in a world where if Qantas/Virgin could offer 50 business class seats it wouldn't just automatically be approved.
My brother in law works for a small mining consultancy (around 10 people) and pointed out to me that they made a similar profit to West Coast last year. Really puts into perspective how small time the AFL is.

The AFL is a billion dollar organisation overall and the clubs turn over tens of millions a year but footy is a minnow compared to the US, UK and Europe. Players are well paid compared to the average Joe, but there are way more people getting paid the average AFL salary outside the AFL compared to inside. If you a highly paid doctor or lawyer or whatever you also don't have to retire at 35 and find something else to do. Average salaries in the EPL are GBP3-4m a year and the top players get 20m. If you are getting tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds a week money stops being a consideration.

The NBA veteran's minimum is $2.2m a year, so about $3.3m in our money. They talk about max contract players making $60m a year and that being generational money, but someone like JaVale McGee has bounced around the league for 15 years earning mostly minimum deals and has career earnings of $80m. Gary Ablett Jr and Buddy Franklin would've made $10m+ but there's a reason that Will Schofield and Xavier Ellis are doing radio and TV and podcasts. Playing in the AFL affords you a great life but it's not 100 ft yachts in Monaco territory.

We are marginally better but the rot is still there, it all starts with the centre bounce and clearance which we have to be the worst of all time. Get a dominant Ruck and things will change quickly I think.
Who's worth targetting at this point? And how much money are we willing to spend?

most NBA teams don't have planes, the NBA owns a fleet of 321N that are operated by Delta

not to mention a basketball team has 5 players on the field, not 18

Can you explain what you mean?

AFL licenses are issued by the AFL, and held by different entities for each club. For the WA clubs, these licenses are held by the WAFC. Vic clubs are independent and club is controlled by voting members.

I think only GC and GWS are owned by the AFL.

What am I misunderstanding?
Is the AFL solely trying to take over the WA club licenses while leaving the Vic & SA clubs as well a Brisbane and Sydney in peace?
This got me looking at the licence ownership situation. Some may interested in this:

Had a debate with a mate a few years ago: he reckoned any AFL player who’s cracked 200 games would never need to work again. LOL.

Bringing up Schoey is actually the perfect example to prove that wrong. He was in the system for 14 years, played 194 games, won a flag, yet he’s still hustling with podcasts, merch, media gigs and other ventures just to keep things rolling.

Sure his footy profile opened those doors, but I he’s not doing it purely for fun, he's still working. I wouldn't imagine he could sit around living off dividends from investments made during his career.

We might get 4 wins for the season. Maybe 3 of those 6 and pull another out of our arse from somewhere else.

I'm liking one of Essendon (R6) or Melbourne (R8) for first win. Brad Scott and Goodwin are both cooked. Both getting sacked this year.
We might beat Richmond or Freo later in the year, but that's it, maybe one win for the season, otherwise none.

Depending on how Mini progresses from here, he may not be coach by the end of the season.

He needs to stop chopping and changing his line ups and positions. Needs to focus on the younger players. Needs to teach the mids to shark oppo ruck taps and shut down oppo mids rather than trying to go head to head, until we get a better, more dominant ruckman.

Hough needs to go back down back. Kelly needs to be permanently replaced in midfield with Hall/Gross/Grego. Harley/Owies needs some time in the WAFL, maybe also Maric, Baker and Graham. Give more games to Davis/Champion/Dewar/Johnston/Long. Would even rather see Petch in over Baker/Graham/Owies/Kelly atm. These guys win some footy a bit more than some others but they're usage is disastrous, it's probably a net negative impact, would rather kids in there getting experience, we're going to get belted anyways.

Baker to the WAFL?

If Mini gets the sack before seasons end, we need to hire this guy.
He's got the answers.

Yeah... nah... there is a lot of change that has happened to the organization in the last year. Coach, list manager, ceo, football manager, gameplan. they'll be given a couple of years to get the new coaches, list and gameplan in shape before there is any talk of sacking

Never have I seen so much delusion in one post.

He probably didn't save enough to get investments. Let's just say he averaged $300k a year (probably on a lot less to start, got a pretty good contract for his peak but not A grade money and was on peanuts at the end).

He probably loses 10% to his manager, so now he's on $270k average. Then if he splashed a bit of cash (nothing crazy), let's say he was spending $200k before tax on living expenses. That leaves him left with $70k before tax, and after paying top tax brack and Medicare levy, he's got about $35k in the bank at the end of the year. After 12 years playing, he's lucky if he banked $500k.

No wonder he's still working. I doubt he was as disciplined as what I outlined above and I may have been too generous with his career average.
