Round 9

Saturday, May 14 2016

Adelaide vs Patrick Dangerfield

It's been anticipated as one of the most talked about matches of the season as ex Crow Patrick Dangerfield faces off against his old side down at Simmonds Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The poster boy of the Crows returned home during the pre-season in what was a massive loss and a massive gain for both parties involved. Dangerfield went to Geelong in return for their number 9 selection in the National Draft (in which the Crows used on Wayne Milera) pick 28 and SA kid Dean Gore.

Dangerfield spent 7 seasons with the Crows and played over 100 games for the club before he moved back home to Moggs Creek to be closer to family and look to start his own one day with wife Mardi.
We caught up with Dangerfield earlier today to get his thoughts on the match-up ahead.

"It's going to be different for sure, I loved my time at the club for 7 years, but it was the right time for myself and Mardi to raise a family and family has always been number 1 for me. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the lads again but when the ball is bounced, it's just another game and another opponent we'll be looking to beat on the day".

Both sides have gone in un-changed.

Dangerfield and Cats have last laugh
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

PATRICK Dangerfield has amassed 41 disposals to help his new side in Geelong beat his old side in Adelaide down at Simmonds stadium winning by 22 points. 18.7 (115) to 14.9 (93)
It was a close game for the first 3 quarters before the Cats really pulled the trigger with Dangerfield having a big last quarter to get his side over the line picking up 13 of his 41 touches coming in the last quarter.

Geelong took a small lead into the first quarter as the managed to kick 3.6 to 3.2 in what was an inaccurate quarter for the Cats who were without their star forward Tom Hawkins.
34,200 turned out to Simmonds Stadium to watch a pretty high scoring affair between 2 sides that will most likely see September action with Geelong just playing the better football on the day to run out winners.

Dangerfield was fantastic as mentioned with a stats line that read. 41 disposals, 18 kicks, 23 handballs, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 5 clearances and 11 inside 50's in a showing that would have made Crows fans jealous. The younger Cat midfielders in Mitch Duncan (32 disposals, 7 clearances) and Cameron Guthrie (31 disposals) were fantastic through the midfield. Joel Selwood led from the front with 28 disposals and a game high 10 tackles.

The Cats without their star forward shared the load in the forward half with 4 players registering 3 goals. Jordan Murdoch, Steven Motlop, Mark Blicavs and Shane Kersten all managed 3 while injury plagued Mitch Clark continued some good form kicking 2 goals for the match.
Adelaide was well supported by the big Texan up forward with the Adelaide captain kicking another 4 goals to take his tally to 43 goals in just 8 games. Brodie Smith and Brad Crouch both pitched in with 2 apiece but really didn't have much help from other forwards with the likes of Betts, Cameron, Jenkins and Lynch all having quiet games this week.

2nlxqib.jpg

Rory Sloane was great again for the Crows in what seems to be his best start to a year topping the Crows possession count for the 5th straight week with a 29 possession game while David Mackay and Brad Crouch each had 23 disposals.
Kyle Hartigan is starting to become one of the better defenders in the game in just his 36th AFL match, not only is he defending well (14 spoils) he is also finding plenty of the ball and becoming very attacking picking up 22 disposals.

It was an entertaining contest between the two sides as has become the norm between the two sides. Ex Geelong Cat Dean Gore who was apart of the Dangerfield deal was solid for the Crows with a 17 possession game while Wayne Milera had a quiet match after playing the first 8 matches of the season.

Adelaide coach Hayden Sumner had this to say after the contest.
"We seem to have a few tired lads towards the end of the game here. We played good football for 3 quarters before I thought the Cats really put us to the sword and ran us into the ground. We'll have a look at how we structure up next week and have a look at the results over the weekend in the SANFL and make a decision on who we can rotate through the side so we have fresh legs coming through. It was always going to be a big question mark over the new interchange cap with the 90 rotations. Guys like Milera who is only a first year player seemed to look tired to me during the last quarter, and even Harry Dear, who has only played the 3 matches for us again is a second year player, so we'll look to manage their workload heading into the second half/middle part of the year.

Jake pulls the Lever on Crows
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
ADELAIDE backman Jake Lever has put pen to paper signing with the Adelaide Crows for the next 2 seasons with the young talented defender singing on in just his second season with the Crows.
Lever has followed in the foot steps of Daniel Talia who signed a 5 year deal with the Crows at the start of the year in which sure's up Adelaide's defense for the next couple of seasons.
Lever looked comfortable at league level when thrown into the fray by Phil Walsh in 2015, seeming to play way above his age barrier and the 19 year old has continued on his good first season playing in the first 8 matches of the season this season under new coach Hayden Sumner. Lever's tally has taken him to 20 games and has only kicked the 1 goal throughout that time.

We caught up with Crows coach Hayden Sumner a little earlier.
"Well obviously it's a great signature to have. We've been very impressed with Jake since coming to the club. He is a mature footballer in a teenagers body and that's something that has stood out for him being able to play as much as he has in the last season and a bit. He was unlucky not to play in the two finals last season however he has grown over the summer not just mentally but physically as well. With Talia injured at the moment, Jake has had to soldier much more responsibility and has done a outstanding job along with Kyle Hartigan down back.
He's a welcomed signature to have paving the way for some of the other younger guys coming out of contract at the end of the season.

Round 10

Sunday, May 22 2016

In what is best described as the match of the round, the Adelaide Crows biggest test in 2016 comes at the hands of the latest premiers of the last 3 years in the Hawks at Adelaide Oval. Hawthorn is comfortably sitting in 2nd position on the AFL Ladder after 9 rounds with 7 wins and 1 loss next to their names having had their bye weekend early in the year compared to most clubs.

Adelaide have brought 2 more experienced players into the line-up to take on the Hawks with Richard Douglas coming straight back in after missing 5 weeks with an injury while ex Carlton recruit Troy Menzel has been rewarded with good SANFL form coming into the side for his first game for 2016. Harry Dear who has looked good in his first 2 matches comes out of the side as the balance of the side while Dean Gore comes out of the midfield rotations as Douglas returns.

Game of the round? Game of the year from Crows & Hawks
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In what was anticipated to be the match of the round by many experts has quickly turned into the match of the year in what was a fantastic match between the Adelaide Crows and Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon in front of a huge Adelaide crowd of 54,060.
Hawthorn comes away with their 8th win of the season but it was the great display of football from both sides in what entertained the crowd throughout the match. Hawthorn won the match 16.13 (109) to 15.5 (95) to give the Crows their 5th loss of the season.

Only 2 goals really separated the two sides for most of the contest with the Hawks kicking out of the blocks with 4.3 to 3.1 in the first quarter. The Hawks then kicked away to the biggest lead of the match heading into the half time break leading 11.7 to 8.4 at the main break. Adelaide kept up with the reigning champs in a display that would make their fans optimistic for the future with some standout performances from some of the younger players. Hawthorn were most fierce at the ball carrier with 57 tackles to the Crows 36 and also winning the clearances 37 to 27 even though Adelaide won the hitouts through Sam Jacobs winning 41 to 32 out of the middle.

Hawks veterans Luke Hodge (39 disposals, 10 inside 50's) and Sam Mitchell (32 possessions, 13 clearances) were the Hawks best while Brad Hill (31 possessions) played more throughout the midfield then previously before. Youngster Taylor Duryea was outstanding as he played one of his better games for the Hawks picking up 29 disposals while first round selection Ryan Burton played a solid game having 19 touches.

Ex Crow Jack Gunston likes playing against his old side as the 24 year old kicked 4 goals while Jordan Lewis, Paul Puopolo, Shaun Burgoyne and Jarryd Roughead all finished with 2. Gunston was an exciting prospect for the Crows when he was there but left the Crows for the Hawks and now finds himself as a 3 time premiership player, heading to win his 4th by the age of 25.

20kdt0n.jpg

Adelaide fans should go home happy with what they saw from their side against the reigning premiers. Even though they didn't get the 4 points there was enough from the Crows players to suggest they're in for a premiership tilt in the next year or two. Adelaide's play was outstanding at times which had the 54 thousand on their feet at times. Adelaide's Rory Sloane was outstanding again for the Crows picking up 34 disposals in what was a gallant display against a hardened body Hawks midfield. David Mackay seems to be enjoying his most consistent season to date picking up 28 touches and 8 inside 50's while Richard Douglas played his first game in 5 weeks and never missed a beat picking up 23 touches and kicked a goal.

Taylor Walker again kicked 5.2 for the home side while Josh Jenkins had a quieter game to his standards but still managed to kick 3 for the match. Wingman Paul Seedsman kicked back into the goal kickers list putting through 2 long bombs from outside 50 along with his 22 disposals while Troy Menzel enjoyed being back in Crows colors.

It was an outstanding match of AFL footy from both sides. It was high scoring, free flowing and a close finish which saw the Hawks win by 14 points.

Round 11

Saturday May 28 2016

ADELAIDE return back to Adelaide oval this weekend coming up against the Gold Coast Suns who are missing star midfielder Gary Ablett for this round 11 clash at Adelaide Oval. Ablett injured himself at training throughout the week with an achillies and will miss the next 3 weeks according to the club.
Adelaide has made just the one change to the side in what was a gallant display against the Hawks last weekend with first round draft selection Wayne Milera who has played the first 10 matches of the season comes out of the side as the young body seemed to have tired over the first part of the season, while ex Giant Curtly Hampton comes back into the side to keep the Crows speed in the side.

Tex kicks 6 as Crows down the Suns
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ADELAIDE forward Taylor Walker has kicked ahead of the Coleman medal race as he kicked another 6 goals on the weekend against the Gold Coast Suns to take his tally to 54 for the season as we have just reached the middle part of the season. Walker and West Coast Eagle Jack Darling are both on 54 goals to end the round with the Eagle big man kicking 5 against the Kangaroos to tie with the bloke from Broken Hill.

Adelaide has won their 5th match of the season to level their win/loss record with a convincing win against the Suns winning by 18 points in front of over 50,000 at Adelaide oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Suns who were missing skipper Gary Ablett fought bravely against a Crows outfit that as in good form considering the loss to the Hawks last weekend but got praised by the AFL community for the match against the reigning premiers.
It was a great come from behind win by the Crows who were trailing for most of the contest till early in the last quarter in which they kicked 9 goals in the last quarter to storm home strongly to get the victory on their home deck.

Crows skipper Taylor Walker booted 6.2 for the afternoon as mentioned earlier takes him to equal leader in the Coleman medal race. Eddie Betts who has had a quiet year to his standard found some form against the Suns defense kicking a bag of 3 goals while midfielders Richard Douglas and Rory Sloane (who was best on ground) both kicked 2 goals.
200cm Sun Peter Wright finished the match with a career best 5 goals next to his name, but it wasn't enough at the end of the day to get the win for his side. Sam Day and Aaron Hall both chipped in with 3 goals while Keegan Brooksby finished the match with 2.

Without their skipper Ablett the Suns needed some of their other midfielders to get the ball rolling against a Crows midfield group that has liven life without Patrick Dangerfield. Dion Prestia put his hand up this afternoon with the small midfielder picking up the slack and finished with 34 possessions while recruit and ex Eagle Matt Rosa (28 disposals, 8 clearances) and Jack Martin (28 disposals) all tried hard against one of the better midfields in the competition.

soo7s2.jpg

ADELAIDE superstar Rory Sloane continues his amazing start to the 2016 season finishing with another game over 30 possessions. Sloane finished with 37 possessions, 6 tackles and 2 goals to go along with 3 brownlow votes you'd think. Ex Giant Curtly Hampton found plenty of the ball as he played in just his 3rd game for the Crows in 2016. Hampton's speed and endurance was on show for the home side with Hampton finishing with 29 disposals playing through the midfield and wing positions. The 2 Crouch brothers finished with 50 disposals between them as they have now added plenty of games under their belt together which is a good sign for the Crows in the near future.

Adelaide's defense stood strong with Hartigan and Andy Otten both had 20 disposals next to their name and holding their own without All-Australian defender Daniel Talia in the side.
Adelaide has now evened the ledger at 5-5 for the season sitting in 9th position keeping in tact with the top 8 while Gold Coast are struggling with just 3 wins and sitting in 15th position on the ladder.

Adelaide travels up to the SCG to take on a Swans outfit that's sitting in 3rd position with 7-3 in what shall be an entertaining contest between these two good sides.

Best mates sign on with Adelaide
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Best mates Brodie Smith and Paul Seedsman have both today signed contract extensions that will tie them to the club over the next few years.

Brodie Smith who recently played his 100th AFL game for the Crows has signed on for a further 2 years which will see him at the Crows till 2018. He is expected to get $330,000 a year on the two year extension. Smith who was the Crows number 14 selection in the national draft has played 107 games and kicked 32 goals since making his debut back in round 1 of 2011. The 23 year old was an All-Australian back in 2014 coming off the half back flank but has clearly mentioned his desire to one day be apart of the Crows midfield.

Paul Seesdman who came across from the Magpies during the trade/free agency period has furthered his extension with the Crows for an extra 3 seasons. Seedsman had a few teams fighting for his signature at the end of the year however fell in love with the Crows. Seedsman has enjoyed a great start to his Crows career averaging 20 possessions a game and has kicked 2 goals on 4 occasions so far this season.
Seedsman is expected to get $316,676 over the next 3 years for the Crows. The 23 year old has played 59 games (49 for Collingwood) and 10 with the Crows and has also booted 29 goals in his short career.

Round 12
Sunday, June 5 2016

Adelaide travel to Sydney for their Round 12 clash at the SCG on Sunday afternoon/evening. In the last game of the round, Kurt Tippett will go up against his old side in what promises to be a close contest. Sydney has had the wood over the Crows in recent memory as the Crows struggle to contain the Swans power forwards and with All-Australian defender Daniel Talia missing, the job will even get tougher for the Crows defense.

Adelaide has made 2 forced changes to the side that won last week vs the Gold Coast with Scott Thompson having to miss a week through suspension after being found guilty of making umpire contact through the second quarter of last weeks game. Kyle Cheney is the other missing which again will not help the Crows defenders with the task of containing Tippett and Franklin, with Cheney missing due to a slight hamstring strain which should only see him miss a week or two at most.
Sydney are full of youngsters at the moment which shows the club great depth and well recruiting with only Jake Lloyd the only real omission from the Swans best 22 at the moment.

Kurt Tippett's Swan song against Crows
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KURT Tippett has almost gone on a single-handily defeated the Adelaide Crows at the SCG on Sunday evening. Tippett, the ex Crow himself had a night out against his old side kicking a career best 8 goals against an undermanned Crows defensive unit with youngsters Lever and Hartigan doing all the bulk work for the night.
Tippett finished best on ground in the Swans big win against the Crows finishing with 23 disposals, 8 marks, 16 hitouts and kicked 8.2 for the evening. His partner in crime Lance Franklin had a great evening by his standards also with the superstar finishing with 24 disposals and kicked 4 goals. Up the other end Crows skipper Taylor Walker who leading up to round 12 was leading the goal kicking with 54 managed to remain goal-less in the loss to the Swans.

Ted Richards never allowed Walker to be within scoring range and had Tex get most of his possessions up-field as he finished with 16 disposals for the night.
The Swans were never headed or challenge by the Crows as the Swans kicked a huge 10 goals in the first quarter to really sniff out any possible comeback from the Crows.
Daniel Hannebery who very well could be leading the Brownlow medal at this stage at the end of the year was outstanding for the Swans through the midfield picking up 36 disposals, 8 inside 50's and kicked a goal while veteran Jarrad McVeigh 34 disposals led the way. But it was the Swans youngsters that really shone on the day. Dean Towers (33 disposals, 7 inside 50's) and Callum Mills (31 disposals, 7 clearances) really set up the Swans for the big win.

2h4g4yp.jpg

In what was a very bleak day for the Crows it was the regular Rory Sloane who could hold his head high. Sloane tried his best to get the Crows some credit ability picking up 33 disposals, 7 tackles and 7 inside 50's and apart from Brad Crouch (25 possessions and 9 tackles) and David Mackay (26 disposals) there wasn't too much to be proud of for Crow fans.

Josh Jenkins found some goal kicking form that has been missing somewhat in recent weeks with the big man kicking 3 goals to top the Crows goal kicking for the night while Tom Lynch was the only other multiple goal scorer.
Kyle Hartigan and Jake Lever both really struggled against seasoned body superstars like Franklin and Tippett with both men seeming to tire quiet early in the piece, maybe missing Daniel Talia more then they think.

The Crows will quickly move on from the match that seen them fall to the Swans by 74 points and regroup and get ready for Essendon back home at Adelaide next Sunday afternoon.

Round 13

Sunday, June 12 2016

Both sides are willing for a win here in their round 13 clash between the Adelaide Crows and Essendon Bombers. Essendon has surprised a lot of people in 2016 by winning 4 matches in their first 12 matches when they were tipped to not win a contest at all. Adelaide on the other hand has been struggling and themselves have only won the 5 matches in their first 12 which makes this match between the two sides a must win for either side to keep in touch with the top 8.
Whoever looses could face a long battle to keep up with the finals race heading into the middle part of the year.

Adelaide has made 2 changes to the side that was smashed by the Swans last weekend with the experienced Scott Thompson coming back into the side while clearance machine Jarryd Lyons also returns. Bombers upset, as Crows season starts to slip
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ESSENDON has caused a big upset over in Adelaide on Sunday with the Bombers defeating the Crows at home by 11 points. At the beginning of the season may tipped the Bombers to struggle to win a match, but by the time Round 13 rocked around, the Bombers have defeated the Crows whilst also taking their tally to 5-7 to start off the year.

The 47,770 in attendance at Adelaide oval were stunned to see what they saw unfold on Sunday afternoon and now questions are being asked about the Crows 2016 season. Not only have they been beaten by the Bombers but they have slipped to 13th position with a 5-7 record after 12 rounds.
Essendon was on the ball early starting the better of the two sides kicking 6.0 to 2.4 in the opening quarter and were never headed by the Crows all night. The game really opened up and was almost over in the 3rd quarter with the Bombers playing outstanding football kicking 9.2 for the quarter while the Crows managed 6.1. in an entertaining quarter of footy.

Ex-Crow Shaun McKernan proved to be the difference between the two sides excelling against the Crows defense who were without Daniel Talia again for the match as McKernan went on to kick 5.0 from just the 7 disposals. Big man Joel Daniher finished with 4 goals from 15 disposals which would please Bomber fans having their two big forwards kicking 9 goals between them. Veteran forward Matthew Stokes and youngster Zac Merrett both kicked 2 goals.

Zac Merrett was best for the Bombers leading the way with possessions picking up 32 and 7 inside 50's while captain for the year Brendon Goddard finished with 30 disposals and finished with 6 tackles.

ADELAIDE will be ruing the missed opportunity against the Bombers they had to really keep a firm grip on the top 8, but now with the loss are sole searching. You can't fault the en devour by Rory Sloane who amassed a season high 38 disposals, 7 clearances, 10 inside 50's and managed to kick a goal to continue his wonderful 2016 season. Brodie Smith relished being put through the midfield with his best result for the year with 30 possessions and 10 inside 50's after what could be described as a quiet season from the All-Australian defender.

The Crows forward line seemed to have functioned well during the afternoon sharing the load but it still wasn't enough to get the 4 points. Eddie Betts and Taylor Walker finished with 3 goals each, while defender Rory Laird, Scott Thompson, Richard Douglas and Josh Jenkins all kicked 2 goals.

Adelaide coach Hayden Sumner was left scratching his head during his pre-match press conference.
"We seemed to have struggled to their pressure they provided throughout the contest which started right from the center bounce. We knew during the season that the Bombers would have the freedom to play the game the way they wanted too after the horrendous couple of years they have had to endure. It's just not good enough from what I expect from the players. Our supporters are frustrated with the way the club is playing and we just need to dust this off, get into recovery mode and get ready for the Showdown next weekend".
