We need a back pocket.

McDonald is a stop-gap and no more, Bartram seems to be moulding himself into a tagger and we can't really rely on Whelan to be fit.

Who do we have coming through?

Have we just about given on CJ? Does Bode have what it takes? Is Buckley accountable enough?

I can see Sylvia being able to mold himself into a Campbell Brown type back pocket

but it may be a position we fill with a utility player for a while

Cheney might be the future here, not sure if he quite has the pace because you have to be genuinely quick to play this position now. I was thinking about it for QB when Collingwood line up with Medhurst, Didak, Davis and Dale Thomas. We will probably have to go tall with Frawley on Medhurst, Bell on Didak and I'm not sure about Neon Leon and others.

Buckley did a couple of nice things when he was on Mark Williams so he might go ok as a back pocket, but I don't see it as his future, he looks a solid wingman not a back pocket. Green goes well on a flank but I wouldn't want him deep in the backline.

You'd think getting the most out of our ruckmen and our tall forward and back prospects are the main priority for our list of the future, but for a complete team a back pocket would be nice.

Yeah, Buckley needs to use his run through the midfield. He also isn't accountable enough to be a defender.

I really hope that Whelan can return soon :(

Bode maybe?

Buckley can get the prune but gee he is ordinary when he gets rid of it. If we can take one thing from Hawthorn when we look at rebuilding, 3 years ago Clarkson said clearly if they cant kick we wont draft them. Look at the players they chose-Young, Birchall, Lewis, Ellis etc all excellent users of the ball. We need players who can execute my namesakes gameplan. I must say credit must go to Dean as even in patches against Adelaide last week it is starting to come together. Still a long way to go but if thats what we see for the rest of the year I will be very happy. A long long long way to go but we would have beaten most sides in the comp today. There will be more pain but light is starting to filter through the tunnel

Today was the most exciting day I can recall in a while. garland, frawley, bate, jones, mclean, bartram, valenti etc led from the front. Lets not even start on aussie what a beauty that boy is. Some of these players stood up on very good players. I thought the back 6 were outstanding.

Oh and a shout out to Dutchy who plucked one of those games he pulls out now and then

i've got hopes for him too... he's running around in Sandy 2's at the moment... but he's 190+ i think... we'd be looking at him as more of a key position player?
Yeh tough to say where he'll end up. I see him as having the ability to play on both talls and smalls and he's a good athlete so I think he could be a rebounding defender. Can take a great grab and has a booming and very accurate kick. Smooth player who I'm pretty confident can make it at the top level. Good luck with him. :thumbsu:

WONAEAMIRRI!

Although you probably need him up forward. Could have matched up on Rioli today and maybe Davis next week.

Played 3 years at National U/18s level as a running defender.

one option in this position post whelan is little austin wonaemerri... he's played the position before, and could be a very good back pocket player...

although they way he leads and reads the ball off the pack (i think he's the best crummer we've had at melbourne for a long time), he's fantastic up forward too but he could be an option down back... it wouldn't surprise me to see bailey try him down back before the season is out...

sounds good... hopefully we'll see him get a run in the sandy 1's soon...

The last thing we need in the backline is Buckley's farcical attempts to run around people that NEVER FUKING WORK..
