I feel what we have been lacking for years is a captain in the same mould as Luke Hodge a player who wil NOT let his team be bullied around who will NOT pull his own team mates out of a melee who plays in the midfield and wins games off of his own boot more often than not.We need a fearless leader who is totally respected by his team mates. Cheers

I doubt newman would allow his team mates to be bullied but he certainly aint in the same talent stratosphere as hodge.

Let us know when you locate another luke hodge and we'll talk.

Judd, Hodge even Luke Ball to an extent. All 3 from that same draft had great leadership qualities.

100% agree we need a captain with the ability to lead by example to make men want to follow him,he has to be able to make a statement when the game is on the line he has to be able to demand more from his team mates both by words and by deeds.

we dont need some one who pulls out of contests or goes missing when it counts.

That's one hell of a Captain you're after there - Based on your criteria here's what you want:-
Luke Hodge/Chris Newman/ Jonathon Brown/Chris Judd/Nick Maxwell/Matthew Pavlich/Nick Riewoldt/Darren Glass/Matthew Boyd - a player who wil NOT let his team be bullied around

Luke Hodge- who will NOT pull his own team mates out of a melee

Chris Judd/Jobe Watson/Cameron Ling/Domenic Cassisi/Gary Ablett/Brent Harvey/Matthew Boyd - plays in the midfield

Jonathon Brown/Matthew Pavlich - wins games off of his own boot more often than not.

Nathan van Berlo/Jonathon Brown/Chris Judd/Nick Maxwell/Jobe Watson/Matthew Pavlich/Cameron Ling/Gary Ablett/Luke Hodge/Brad Green/Brent Harvey/Domenic Cassisi/Chris Newman Nick Riewoldt/Adam Goodes/Darren Glass/Matthew Boyd
- fearless leader who is totally respected by his team mates.

So Hodge fits 3 of your criteria (one of which is loving a melee) along with Judd 3, Brown 3, Pavlich 3 and Boyd 3. Newman 2, Glass 2, Maxwell 2, Watson 2, Cassisi 2, Ablett 2, Harvey 2. van Berlo 1, Ling 1, Green 1, Riewoldt 1, Goodes 1. :thumbsu:

or a smarter more skillfull Jake King

:D:D

Trent Cotchin - a fine balance of mongrel and talent.
Agree he'll be our next captain. Does he need the burden of captaining a young inexperienced team right now though? Having just turned 21, being tagged every week, 50 odd games and often on a modified training schedule I don't know if he needs that added pressure, the media would eat him alive. No doubt Hardwick has him pencilled in as a future skipper but I reckon they're just allowing him to take stock of his own situation before taking on the rest of the teams problems that Newman has to deal with week in week out.

hmm heres a thought. why dont we play newman in the middle then? has the body and puts it on the line. has the skills to execute. and is a great shot for goal. so why not? I like him, but I just dont think he IS a defender.

because he has never been able to work hard enough to get his body up to a midfield standard - cant do the gut running.

when i first saw him and cogs runnings around years ago, i always thought they would be a great 1-2 midfield combo, very complementary, and that one would be captain and one vice. How that turned out to be a wrong prediction. Cogs body let him down and Newman never worked hard enough to truly be a midfielder - in my opinion, watching his whole career to date, Newman has underachieved. I always thought the same of Bowden, and of the current crop, Deledio and Morton. Blokes with talent in spades, but not willing to truly push themselves to reach their apex.

Basically, blokes who were at punt road at a time when they could underachieve and still be the best - big fish in small pond kind of stuff.

I'll always have time for blokes like Foley and Nahas, because at least they push themselves to get 100%.

Of the current youngsters, Cotchin is above and beyond the man who seems to have that unrelenting drive to push himself to achieve. If his body holds out, the Captaincy is his. Only a matter of whether its 2012 or 2013 in my opinion.

thanks for actually giving a good answer and some insight into newmans early days :thumbsu:

I think it is a trap to make assessments about who has or hasnt achieved without taking into account the circumstances under which they had to perform and the roles given them by coaching staff. Threads like this one tend to piss me off as they exude the virtues of players from priviledged oppositions and successful teams, in this case Hodge, without consideration to the background in which he has be allowed to display his skills. I would suggest at Hawthorn he has had every opportunity to do just that.

I wonder how ready we would be to bestow such high praise had the likes of Hodge and Judd had to get changed in possum shit, spend 5 years in a bottom 4 side and then have the daunting task of representing your players to your coach in a final display of frustration all while playing where your team needs you to, not where you can best perform. Chuck in a hugely successful recovery from a serious broken leg, managing to play for Australia and drawing huge plaudits from Sheedy and yeah you're right, Newman has under achieved.

Great post. Because we're shit at the moment Lids cops it for playing in defence but Hodge and Mcleod played in defence all the time. Joel Bowden made All-Aust twice playing on Brown, Hall, Pavlich etc. but still gets no credit. A commentator on Sat night slagged Deledio off saying he should take it upon himself to go in to the midfield, get the ball, lead from the front blah blah blah.....sheesh, he's only doing what Damien Hardwick is asking him to do, he'd be dropped if he just decided to do what he wants!!!

Most people in life make excuses and justify that near enough is good enough - "i could have been a contender, a somebody ...".

The rare few people just get the job done regardless and find a way to achieve their potential.

Unfortunately, this club has been riddled with the majority types over our long period of mediocrity. The true acheivers have been few and far between - i dont just mean on the playing field either, our woeful administrations, coaching personnel etc.

Finally, we are getting some real leadership on and off field. On field, we are very lucky to have one of those rare achiever types in Trent Cotchin. He is the most important player on our list. Dusty *may* (arguably) be more talented, but Cotchin in the type to drag others up around him and make everyone get more from themselves.

Newman on the other hand, is an upstanding bloke for sure, and a pretty good player, but is an underachiever IMO.

Chris Newman is doing a fine job and will continue to do so.

Our clubs problem and only time will fix it, is experienced players. Newman is only one man. He is apparently well respected by his peers but he simply needs help. There is only so much one can do.

This is the reason Brad Miller was brought to the club, to give us another older head to help lead the younger players and this showed early on with results on the board.

Obvioulsy Trent Cotchin will be our next captain whether that is next year or 2013 but by that stage we should have a few more in the 100 club. Just quietly i also think if he had the captain tag thrown on him it would only make him excel further ala L.Hodge.

Chris Newman is a terrifc player for our club and i have no problem with him at the helm until the club thinks Cotchin is ready.

Hodge isn't any better now he has the captaincy, ironicially Sam Mitchell has become better without it. I agree Cotch is next in line but it's not going to be easy for him if he gets it too soon. Hodge had the advantage of 173 AFL games behind him, 2 B&F's, 3 All-Aust, a Norm Smith and Premiership medallion. Cotchin has hardly completed a full pre-season. I'd be surprised if we gave it to him in 2012. I reckon your're on the money with 2013.

I hope Cotchin is the type of person that will thrive with the extra resposibility and gets it asap.
Newman's been ok but we need a more influential player to be captain imo.
I wouldnt be against throwing big money at a ready made captain and making Cotch VC, theres not too many other candidates atm.

Newman is one of the most under rated Captains in the league. I love his leadership perfect for our group

I've like it too. I sat near the fence at the North game and he backed in to packs all day. He is no frills and talks alot out there and soldiers on no matter how hard and fast the ball is entering the defence. Most importantly though he is respected by those that matter (Hardwick, Benny, Batchelor, Rance, Cotchin etc etc...)

To be honest we play Hodge (in defence) usually because we don't have another option. Due to him being so good in reading the play he is able to cut of passes and intercept really well. But I think given the choice, Hawthorn would rather him play midfield or forward where he can create and be more damaging.
