We still have one area of game we need to improve.

We're actually #1 in the AFL for least opposition scores from our forward half (the opponent's defensive half) and #1 at preventing defensive 50 to forward 50 transition
We are also concede the least marks by opponents in our forward line... which is not surprising given all our marking forwards... which would be helping reducing the intercept rebounding by the opposition.

And Stewart missed our game.

We are the best in the AFL at keeping the ball inside our F50 through forward defensive pressure?

No. We are one of the most efficient teams at scoring from our inside 50's. Then if we dont score - we are one of the best teams at not having the opposition score from a turnover inside 50.

Therefore - there is no issue.

The most important area of our game we need to improve is match awareness. Inexplicably reverting to "game saving" mode way too early and/or panicking in the final minutes isn't going to get us over the line against most top eight sides, particularly Collingwood, Brisbane or Geelong.

That's going to matter a lot more in 2025 than clearances IMO.

We were at the start of the season, but our efficiency inside 50 has dropped to AFL average in the last 10 rounds (+ it's likely worse against the top 8).

We kinda traded it for a seriously strong defence.

I agree there is no issue.

My original post was that I thought defensive pressure was the issue the OP might be highlighting when I read thread title.

Which we are bad at.

But we compensate for it up the ground.

And, when conditions allow, efficiency in our forward line.

Which fell away against Hawthorn and cost us the game.

Relying on forward line efficiency won't stack up in the more contested Finals. Opposition and conditions can take this away from you.

Which Richmond did on Grand Final day 2017.

And Tex fatiguing.

When was the last time Tex took a Ruck contest in the F50. Quite a physical demanding play, which he has not done for a few weeks.

But helped our forward efficiency stat.

Yup, especially as that also protects Thilthorpe to a degree, so the ruck contests do have a flow-on effect. The other thing is the good teams have likely adapted to our 3 tall structure and probably are comfortable giving up repeat entries to us. After all, you'd rather us attacking on a slow play instead of a fast one.

This is fair. And none of those players you listed - Berry, Dawson, Rankine, Peatling and Soligo - have had a great year. Berry is maybe playing better than ever but still not at A grader levels.

Maybe Dawson you could make a case for, but he’s definitely been below his best most weeks.

Anyway, I agree the midfield needs to be better but the good thing is we have seen better from these players, they just need to put it together in the back half of the year.
Dawson is in Brownlow contention ffs

We're 7th in centre clearances and 7th in stoppage clearances this year.

Our scores from stoppage when we beat up teams are huge. 12:10 to 4:4 vs Richmond for example.

Against the better sides scores from stoppage.

Gold Coast 5:8 AFC 5:5
Geelong 7:2 AFC 4:2
Freo 5:3 AFC 1:8
Port 5:8 AFC 4:3, not a better side, but a high-pressure game
Collingwood 0:4 AFC 1:7
Brisbane 4:7 AFC 4:4

Yep. This is where I think Butts got a bad rap from supporters from. We had so manny games where the opposition ran unhindered through the middle and hit the full forward with a 30 metre stab pass. Peak Silvagni wouldn't have stopped the FF but it was obviously Butts fault and not the shit job further up ground. Now that we have swapped out Sloane, Laird and Crouch for Dawson, Peatling and Sogs, the opposition get more pressure, resulting in harder kicks to mark, easier to defend and our backs look good.

Bring Crouch back and you'll get to see his man run through the middle like the seas have parted, lacing out passes we could only dream of stopping.

Think Peatling’s role has been immense.

Its still an issue. Clearances are going to cost us a flag if we dont get on top of it.

Yup, those are the moments that scream we miss Matt Crouch seeing we lack a gun ball hunter at times.

It's a misconception we need to win clearances to win the game. We don't
Yep

Every team is different.

Gold Coast are big on clearances. They scored 84 points from clearances vs Brisbane.

We aren't as reliant on them.

We do need to be putting pressure on though if we're losing them. Don't want to allow clean clearances. There were periods last night when our pressure dropped (which is a rarity this season)

It screams we need more clearances. Hawthorn destroyed us in that area in the first Qtr and they put 5 goals on us.
Good luck thinking that's not an issue.

We have lost 5 games. We won the clearances in 3 of those 5 games.

Earlier in the season our biggest issue was opposition scoring from centre bounces. After our Round 5 loss to Geelong we had conceded the most points from centre bounces in the entire AFL with our opposition averaging 19 points per game directly from centre bounces.

We have cleaned that up and are now 5th in the AFL for this with the last three weeks only conceding 14 points across ALL three games.

Hawks - 1 point
Port - 1 goal 1 point.
Gold Coast 1 goal.

We are the best in the AFL for limiting opposition scoring from clearances.

If we come up against Brisbane or Geelong in a finals and lose clearances like we did with Hawthorn it won't be close.
Its an issue, an issue I can guarantee you the club is trying to work on.
Its a weakness in our game, and if we nail that we will be unstoppable
