Yea thats what I thought but it seems a little odd..

When you are making it does it, in the copyright part down the bottom people usually write "Website optimised for _____", does that mean that they have made the website on that size or that they sazed it at that size?

Bloody confused :confused:

Generally it means they have saved the web site with their monitors to that size.

What they are saying is that when they designed the general lay-out, they had certain perspectives in mind. Although web browers will size web pages to fit, designers will often use fix width columns , this especially true where it comes to picture. This might push the web page right off the screen to the right, forcing the user to scroll to the right. Text columns might also be too thin if viewed on too small a resolution making the page look odd.

generally however, the quoted optimized size is the minimum recommended. If the user's screen is set to a larger resolution, it israrely a problem.

If you're designing a web page, I recommend you set your screen resolution through display settings to the setting you want your page optimized for, which is normally 800 x 600 (although 1024 X 768 is becoming quite acceptable as well).

BUT

Ive recently got a new moniter and I can fit the biggest size on it.. I will have to change my resolution to see what other people see everything I publish my site - correct?

That's the easiest way, and probably the best way to design a site. However if you don't want to, you can copy the following code into the body of a blank HTML document. This will allow you to open a browser window at either 800x600 or 1024x768. You can then test your site in the relevant oen window.

Take note that Bigfooty has changed the code slightly by putting in some end of line statements. Just make sure that everything in each of the anchor statements (<a href.... etc>) is on the one line.

<p>go <a href="#" onClick="resizeBrowser('','1024x768','toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,width=1024,height=768')" >here</a>
for a 1024 x 768 window</p>
<p>or if you want a 800 x 600 go <a href="#" onClick="resizeBrowser('','800x600','toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,width=800,height=600')">there</a>
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
<!--
function resizeBrowser(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0
window.open(theURL,winName,features);
}
//-->
</script>

IDEALLY yes - but that would be a massive pain in the bum :)

simply resizing your window to a smaller size would do the trick.

typing this into your location bar (where you normally type URLs) will resize the window accordingly..

javascript:resizeTo(1024,768)

Replace teh numbers with 800,600 for a 800 x 600 screen etc. REmember to leave space for toolbars, window borders etc.

I gave it a go but it didnt work.. just came up the same as what I have it set to @ 800x600 and 1024x whatever or just came up as a blank page.

I think 1024x768 is definately the standard now.

Statistics from one of my websites:

Screen resolutions (of users)
1. 1024 x 768 76.9 %
2. 800 x 600 15.4 %
3. >= 1280 x 1024 7.7 %
Total 100.0 %
