Let's talk about the weirdness that is the English language.

It is the only language we produce Produce While Who have their own differences.

We also must remember to polish the Polish table.

If future TEACHERS have to be TAUGHT, why can't future PREACHERS PRAUGHT?
Preachers have preached but teachers never teached.

One last thing, words are essentially noises that somehow come together and turn into something that is coherent.

Thanks for inspiring this topic ioppolo and Deddy.

My thoughts from the other thread...

I always end up thinking about how languages were created. Honestly who decided that the word 'chair' means a chair, it's just a random sound how did it become widely agreed upon and used by billions of people. Who gave themself the power to go around and name everything? Why are there different languages? Why is my name not chair?

Mind blowing stuff to think about really

Also, why aren't all translations similar to one another?

Why is Smith similar to Schmid and not similar to say Fabbro, Koval and Kuznet and why do Brown and Braun sound similar while White and Blanco or Bianchi sound nothing alike?

Also, who decided what the letters should look like?

Whoever started the trend of the early writings of the English language must've been a smart mother****er

Numbers too.

Hell, even the way letters and numbers are pronounced.

Numbers too.
Arabic - based on the number of angles in each shape.

Zero has no angles
1 has one angle (no line at the bottom in the original)
2 (shaped originally as Z) has two angles
3 (straight lines) has 3 angles

Etc.
7 was a difficult one - there were an extra lines at the top and a strike-through in the body of the 7 to add an extra 4 angles.

If future TEACHERS have to be TAUGHT, why can't future PREACHERSPRAUGHT?
Because the Normans invaded England in 1066.
Why is Smith similar to Schmid and not similar to say Fabbro, Koval and Kuznet
Because English was brought to Great Britain by ze Germans. Italian is a Romance language so has its roots in Latin, Yiddish is based on Old German, Hebrew and Aramaic, and Russian is a Slavic language.
why do Brown and Braun sound similar while White and Blanco or Bianchi sound nothing alike?
Brown and Braun are similar owing to the German-English link cited above. Blanco and Bianchi are derived from Latin, whereas White is derived from German.

Being a native English speaker is such a massive advantage. Not only is it the language everyone else learns second, it is full of rules and exceptions, tenses etc. Drink, drinking, drunk, drank. Bring, bringing, brought. There, their, they're. Slaughter, laughter...

German (same language group) for example looks impossible at first glance but is very easy to pick up. You just need to get a hang of the pronunciations. Siebentausendzweihundertvierundfünfzig looks terrifying, but it's just 7,254. Siebentausend - 7000, zweihundert - 200, vier - 4, und - and, fünfzig - 50. Syntax is a little different to how we would say it in English but it's very logical.

English also borrows a lot of words from French, Latin and Italian. I mean if your workplace closes mid week from a force majeure, I guess you'll be paid pro rata while you're sitting at home in the alfresco area...

how do you pronounce the syllable "ough"?

Cough = "off"
Rough = "uff"
Bough = "ow"
Bought = "or"
Though = "o"
Through = "oo"
Thorough = "ugh"
..............................

So next time you laugh at a migrant's poor attempt at English pronunciation, have some sympathy.

Hiccough = "up."
Brought = "or."

But hiccup is onomatopoeic.

Hiccough is a mistranslation/misinterpretation.

I never thought of the first spelling as onomatopoeic.

That's really interesting.

#TIL.

Well our alphabet didn't originate with English.
