any biggest combacks from almost 100 to nearly pull off a win?, i heard there was a game, i think fitzroy were 100 behind and only lost by 30 points or something, and bulldogs led port by 80 odd and won by only 4 goals or something

Different league, but R16 1982, Sturt vs Central District, Sturt led by 70+ pts in the 2nd qtr before Centrals started fighting back and they ended up winning 20.23 (143) to 21.15 (141). It's the best comeback in SANFL history.

These are some known instances of a 50-point deficit being wiped out yet the team who lost that lead still won.

I remember that 2011 Bulldogs vs Eagles game. Was bizarre viewing. The dogs were an unstoppable force for a quarter, wiping out the entire deficit and looking likely victors before we suddenly turned up for the last five minutes and stole it back.

In R22 2010 Richmond were 59pts down against Port, got within 3 points in the last quarter and IIRC kicked a goal to go in front but it was disallowed. Port hung on to win by 10.

The Tigers were never going to win the game, but in a remarkable 1985 match against Carlton Richmond trailed by 112-points at three-quarter time - 3.12-30 to 22.10-142 - before kicking 8.2 to the Blues 1.5 in the final term and only go down by 73-points in the end, 23.15-153 to 11.14-80.

Carlton aren't the only team in history to hold a massive lead at three quarter time and ease up in the final term, but this Blues vs. Tigers match is one of the more extreme examples. If Mr. Strickland, the Principal from Back to the Future was a Carlton fan, I think he would have summed up the Blues' final quarter performance with one word, "Slackers!"

There were exactly 44 combined scoring shots in each of the West Coast Eagles' games against Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Collingwood. That streak would have continued for a 4th game vs Geelong if not for Oscar Allen kicking a behind after the siren.

Today's Hawthorn-Adelaide game has been weird so far.. Adelaide has 12 straight without a behind!
Edit: Make that 14.0 and counting...

Adelaide kicked 10 goals in the second quarter - and then to the same end in the last quarter kicked zero. That ever happened before?

I went to a game in 92 where Fitzroy beat Essendon.

Essendon kicked like 11 goals in the last and still lost by 50 odd.

Check the date!! Sydney kicked 10 goals in the second quarter and none in the last. 4 times just 1 one goal has been kicked in the last quarter (by a team that kicked 10+ in the second quarter). No team has ever kicked 10+ goals in the first quarter and none in the third quarter (twice just 1 goal has been kicked).

It was also the last time Matthew Lloyd ever donned the number 18 for his club.
No, not that Matthew Lloyd, a completely unrelated Matthew Lloyd who coincidentally wore number 18 and never got picked again for the seniors.

Not quite 100 points, but in round 5 2008 West Coast trailed Port by 68 midway through the last quarter, before they kicked 7 goals straight to finish the match and only lost by 24 in the end.

The 1974 SANFL Second Semi final had a fairly bizarre scoreline:

Sturt1.13.113.157.1961Sat 14-Sep-1974 2:10 pmFootball Park30,878
Port Adelaide6.46.56.88.856Sturt won by 5 points

Port out of the blocks with 6.4, but didn't score another goal until the final quarter.
Sturt a horrible 3.15 at 3/4 time (they had a history of inaccuracy in the 70s), then manage 4.4 to pinch the match.
I'm assuming difficult conditions which Footy Park was prone to.

Felt the need to dig for some data.
The weather data for September 14, 1974 at the Adelaide Airport recorded these:

Average temperature: 11.5C (Max: 13C, Min: 10C)
Average wind speed: 30.2km/h
Maximum sustained wind speed: 44.6km/h

The BOM also has some rainfall data on that day. The nearest one to Football Park I could find was at Seaton, which recorded 6mm.

Keep in mind that Adelaide Airport and Football Park are seven to eight kilometres apart and we don't know where the observation equipment was set up on the airport grounds.

Not much rain was recorded in the lead-up to the game so I'd wager that the wind was the reason for the havoc.

The 1984 WAFL grand final was interesting. Swan Districts were experienced campaigers and had won the last two premierships. but their stars were getting older and they had lost a lot of talent to the VFL/AFL. East Fremantle, led by Ron Alexander as captain/coach, were on the rise. The two teams met in the grand final. I can't remember the exact scores but Swans kicked about ten goals to nil in the first quarter but East Fremantle stormed back to be just about level at the long break. Swans narrowly won to complete a hat-trick of flags.

That was certainly a bizarre first half for any game, but especially for a Grand Final!

I was at the game, but I don't remember much of it, being 15-years-old. But I think East Freo were a bundle of nerves in the first quarter and Swans' big-game experience allowed them to settle down quicker. Then East Freo must have realized that they were in a big mess and worked hard to dig themselves out of it in the second quarter. Both sides had plenty of talent.
