AS part of a broader development program for the Blues’ coaching staff, Carlton great Robert Walls will return to Ikon Park in 2019 as a mentor to the Blues’ AFL coaching panel.

Head of Football Brad Lloyd said the Blues were delighted to welcome back Walls.
“The Club, as part of their Coach Development Program, is putting together a coach mentoring component for all the coaches across the club and we approached Robert to see if he would be interested to play a role as a mentor,” Lloyd said.

I am just surprised someone threw Tom Browne a real bone to allow him to finally report something that had substance for once.
I was concerned our coaching group had no real senior helper but this is better than no one. Would have ideally got a full timer like Ratten but that was dead in water from start as option.

I just hope the club did it's due diligence in checking that Walls is a good fit for this position. For instance, does Bolts know him, and get along with him? How many other possible candidates did they look at before settling on Walls? (And yeah, did they ask Parko?)

I understand Bolts and Wallsy are both teachers by profession, so at least there's some common philosophical ground. Though from what I hear, they would differ considerably in their approach to classroom discipline...

I’m ok with this. The winning culture is gone from the team. Maybe some of his successful Blues team mojo might rub off on this team. We need to learn how to believe in ourselves again. Stop being the butt of the AFL jokes. Maybe Walls can be the conduit to help with that.
This isn't a perception from within the club, this is your perception, and the perception of other fans of other clubs.

That's why this kind of appointment actively bothers me. If our coaches are not enough themselves, go out and hire new ones, get a better balance between leadership and tactical nous; don't go out and find someone as a sop to traditionalists for a marketing win.

Other sides fans will laugh at you every year you don't win the flag, which even at Carlton is more years than not. Who legitimately gives a third of a shit if we're the butt of jokes around the competition? They laugh when you win ("Richmond haven't beaten anyone good, anyone could beat Sydney lol") and they laugh when you lose ("Hahaha, sucked in, Hawthorn in freefall now!").

Drown out the noise. Have intent for the prize in front, ignore the rest.

As for the appointment of Walls itself, I'm dubious. I've stated my opinion - that he's been irrelevant to the AFL for the better part of two decades, and were he specifically tactically adept he'd never have been without a job - on his credentials in a 2018 context. I suppose I just have to wait and see, like everything else. Could be that he's a godsend.

Provided his role is limited, and he's aware of his own limitations, the best I can say of this is that it could be not a poor appointment.

This.

If this was done, then I cannot be against this appointment. If it was just 'go and get someone famously opinionated who's identifiable enough as Carlton to make the traditionalists think we're back', he can go back to retirement immediately.

Well the decision is made so I guess we have to support him and hope things work out. But I'd be a lot happier if he picked up the phone to Ken Hunter and said 'sorry for being a p***k to you when you actually needed my help'. If he can't learn from those things, and if he's not a better person for his sojourn in 'Chateau Verdefloor' then this will end poorly.

Ok Boys time to run 100 100's

Someone like walls is needed it doesn't take an idiot to realise you can't start from a centre bounce with 0 players inside your 50m, that was the most embarrassing thing I have seen from Bolton. it was against Adelaide and i posted the photo, 3 times we won the ball out of the centre and had nobody to kick too.

Walls seems to be the perfect fit, a bloke who is worried about the future of the Carlton Football Club that has achieved success at the highest level.

Must have been your first Blues game for a while then, we've been doing that for 3 years off and on.

I can not say that I am inspired by this decision. Then again I was not (at the time) inspired by the Craig appointment either.
So long as there is a clear understanding of his role then it will be interesting to see what comes of it.
However he is not engaged as one of our coaches. Our coaches are adults and can consider his opinions and act accordingly.

Edit:
:) one thing is evident, he will have to tone down his bitching about how we are going.

I’m ok with this, it’s a voluntary role part time, he’s around the club a fair bit apparently, so if Simon Lloyd thinks it’s a good idea then fine.

Wallsy gets branded a ‘dinosaur’ but he has not only a lot of footy, media experience but life experience too.

I see it as a bit of a token appointment... can’t hurt imo
