Welcome Barnaby and not a Croad in sight

After featuring in countless trade rumours, Carlton have held onto picks 1 and 2 and made only one trade.

We have picked up ruckman Barnaby French from Port along with their second round pick #31 in exhange for our second round pick #18.

I know this is a drop of 13 positions for the pick but you have just as much chance at getting a quality player at 31 as you do at 18 in this draft.

Overall this is not such a bad trade. Remember ruckmen were worth heaps this year and at one stage we were going to give up Pick #18 without getting a pick in return.

I think you guys did well. Although Carlton arent my favourite side, they had alot of injuries this season. Carlton will probably be top 8 next year and if those #1 and #2 picks arent taken away from em... even better

I like the trade. Getting Barnaby on board and recieving a pick along with him was a great pickup for the Blues, espicially since his value to the team may skyrocket if Matty Allan breaks down again.

A good trade I think. Would rather have seen us give up our lower pick rather than #18, especially given that we had the bargaining power over Port because they would not have got nuttin for him in the pre-season draft. This will put pressure on Allan to perform. Not to mention the fact that French is able to drop back and fill a hole in defence. Something we wernt able to do last year. Now McKernan can play up forward for the whole year (unless both ruckmen get injured) where its quite obvious this is where he plays his best football.

We did what we had to do. Everyone knows it's extremely doubtful we will be in the pre-season draft. We got slaughtered in the ruck this year and French will at least provide a bit of a contest at the centre bounces, at least easing some of the pressure on our undermanned forwards. With Allan's contract and injury status uncertain we had to pick up a ruckman.
Would have been happier to have traded 34, but French for 18 and 31 is no disaster.

Carlton have done well.

French frees up McKernan to go forward, while when Allan's foot shatters into 46 different pieces, the two big men can alternate without problem.

Smart trading from Pagan, although it looks like Houla, Doering, Mansfield, Merrington, Fevola, Manton, Murphy and Plunkett get another chance.

If Carlton have a Geelong-esq run with injuries, they should give the eight a decent shake.

However, next year the core players will be getting on...Rattan (32), Hicky (31), Bradles (40), Kouta (30), McKay (33), Allan (28), Campo (28)

This is cause for concern.

Hopefully, Wells and Goddard make the transition easier once they hit full flight in a few years. I'm not convinced by Carlton's much hyped exisiting youngsters, but Pagan obviously is and it will interesting whether Pagan goes all out to make the eight to restore pride or work on making the Blues being a force in 3-4 years in time.

After all the rumours going around about Carlton and possible trades, I believe we did well. We needed another ruckman, which we got. This enables Whitnall and McKernan to play forward, Kouta to slot in at CHB and Mants and Beauy to fill other spots up back.

Watch for Merrington next year. Could really develop into a "swingman" next year.

You make a good point evertonfc about our aging list, but most teams are in similar positions. I think with Livingston, Wiggins, Sporn, Prendergast etc getting good game time this year, we will have a good blend of experience and youth next year.

Can't wait for 2003 to come around!!

Evertonfc,
Do you think our young players are over-hyped? Most people don't seem to rate them at all - or even recognise we have anyone under 30 on our list ...
No Riewoldts or Judds among them, but Livingston, Thornton, Davies, Sporn and Campbell are all a chance to kick on.
Hopefully we get the chance to add Goddard and Wells next month.

Well to be fair we haven't really had that many early picks to pick up any top line young players. We got Livingston at 4 and he looks good so far.

Livingston, Thornton,
Damn Carlton taking Thornton in the rookie draft! He did the pre-season training before rookie draft at the Demons but we missed out.

I've gotta say how great Livingston's speech was at your B&F as well. I saw it on Foxtel the other night. If kids like him are your future then it looks good.

Those guys all look like becoming good players ... Thornton looks like a natural quality backman. I thought the Saints had some previous interest in him??.
