He's got the job. Never know what the outcome will be but he seems to be a hard working and determined bloke. Has worked f'n hard to get to this level. Good on him. Assistants still to be added around him. Could turn out bad or great...coaching is a tough gig. But whatever the case, he's a Melbourne man now and because of this:

How long until the first "sack Neeld!" posts come? I disctinctly remember there were a couple of "sack Bailey" posts by half-time of his first NAB cup match in 08. Can Neeld top that?

Congratulations to the Melbourne Football Club, securing the services of Mark Neeld as your Senior Coach is a massive coup for your football club given the amount of interest in him from other clubs.

Make no mistake, Mark Neeld was given the choice of both clubs and accept Melbourne's offer after close consultation with Mick Malthouse, that is fact.

The off field performance of Adelaide was a detrimental factor in Neeld's choice.

You have an absolutely ripping football brain within your midst now and his ability to get the best of his players is legendary at Collingwood, he is a very hard task master but is thoroughly an approachable and even mannered operator.

You'll certainly notice he'll bring high pressure football traits to Melbourne and there will be an uncompromising pursuit of bigger bodies, improved skills and high counts of pressure acts.


You'll see the benefits of Neeld and his foot print in the coming 2 years.


Be patient, the wheel wasn't invented over night and Melbourne will still have some pain in the next 12 months, learning a new game plan, training harder, bonding closer and maturing as men as well as footballers.

I must admit right off the bat the talk of being the hardest to play against all over the ground instead of the usual "getting games into the kids" sounds much more positive. To be fair, Bails had to do exactly that with the list he inherited,.....

Agree... Mark Neeld is giving us some hints about how he thinks....and it sounds pretty good so far. DB's "getting games into the kids" is about all he could give us for 4 years...to me he seemed to be stubborn, wouldn't change his tactics during a match, and didn't seem to want to try something a bit radical. He gave the impression that he was always right and the rest of the world just didn't get it. He had his shot.

He's now in Yr 12 and quite a unit. The new kid on the bus in his first few days hasn't said a word (Neeld). The bully starts cracking noses half way down the bus and Neeld casually rises, takes about ten steps and grabs the bully under the armpit and lifts him up and over about four sets of seats and places this bloke on his ass and says "sit down clown" - the only three words we ever heard him say but F#@% did we feel safe for the next 10 months.

Got a laugh out of that story, sounds like a great bloke, albeit one that won't take any shit.

I'm curious.......as a coach Neil Craig was being bagged before he left Adelaide. Now he looks like he's coming to MFC as director of coaching it's like a miracle transformation - all of a sudden Neil Craig is the man. We've just appointed a new coach, so shouldn't we let the dust settle for a few days and make sure a Neeld /Craig combination is actually the best for MFC. There might be other options Neeld/?

I'm certain there won't be any new coaching appointments without the approval of Neeld. Why would you undermine the guy you hired to lead the club out of disaster by hiring people he doesn't like? I'm looking forward to getting rid of all our second rate assistants and building a new team. FWIW, I think Neil Craig has the capability to fit in with Neeld. He is not a selfish type and will put the club first. The thing is, there hasn't been anything remotely credible to suggest that Craig is headed our way. It's just a media invention at this point. I'm sure we are talking to plenty of potential coaching recruits. Now that Neeld is on board and seems to have such a strong reputation, it shouldn't be too hard to persuade good talent to come on board.

I was doubtful at first but everything I've learned about this guy over the past 2 days has left me thinking it's no more risky than hiring somebody like Eade. Plus he's younger and has fresher ideas. I think we got the best available candidate for the job. Go Mark, kick some ass!

Nobody knows how Neeld will go as a coach, but like many, I'm liking what he's said.

Regardless of talent, there are some "not negotiable" principals that a team needs to adhere by:

Hardness at the ball
Consistency of effort

Failey couldn't address this in 4 years at the club. Hopefully Neeld's mantra is all about on-field success, and not the BS "being competitive" crap that Failey dished up every press conference.

It was interesting to read how the interviews were conducted. No BS powerpoint presentations or other wanky recruitment agency fluff, it was purely based on 4 football related questions. Neeld wasn't asked to give feedback on our list. IMO, this is a good thing, because it means that the club doesn't believe that there are any excuses for lack of on-field success. Failey hid behind the "development and rebuild" crap for 4 years.

After 4 years of bewilderment and anger, I'm excited again despite Scully's departure.
