Pick 43: Steven Verrier (South Fremantle)
DOB: 24/7/1993
Height: 187cm
Weight: 76kg

Jackson says: "He's a rebounding defender who played for WA in the national under-18 carnival. He also played some senior footy for South Fremantle this year, which is a positive. He had a serious nose injury earlier in the year, and that set him back for a number of weeks, but we think he's a high-possession winner and he can play a rebounding role for us in the future."

For those who would like to know, Steve and I are friends. We attended the same school and were in the same specialised footy class. The whole class was pretty handy with the ball, but Steve stood out above the rest. He has all the tools to be a quality AFL player. He is quick, has great foot/hand skills, can take a grab, and already has a tank on him, so fitness isn't a worry. He is a utility and can play as a medium sized forward, inside/outside mid, or as a rebounding or shutdown defender. His biggest attribute is his determination to win the ball. He will back into packs, or dive headfirst into the contest to get his hands on it. Would be the type of player Dimma likes.

The negatives for him are that he is still slight framed. He has always been so, and will struggle to put the 5-10 kg's required for AFL, and to sustain that weight. The other is his attitude. Yes he is dedicated to playing football, but he also has a habit of partying just that little too hard, too often, and doesn't have the work ethic and desire to succeed on the training track. If he works these out, he will be a good player.

Thanks for the inside info.
Richmonds has pretty well stated that he's a rebounding defender. So guaranteed he will end up as a forward .
Heres hoping he can improve his work ethic quick enough.
Is he strong for the weight he is?

Sounds very much like he plays like Dan Connors, in more ways than 1. Hope you're wrong.

Has to be a catch with this kid, that package is way too good for a rookie, Sidesteps, has time at senior level, Tackles, Hunts the footy in the air, gutsy, Makes the right desicion at the right time, Beautiful kick... Im obviously missing something

Wrong about what? That he lacks workrate?

It's not uncommon - and lots sort it out - I think what you'd be hoping for is that Steven works hard and develops into the great player Grockadoc obviously believes he can be.

Sorry - it just irks me. Kids have faults that they can sort out - they're 18 for gods sake, not 30 and set in their ways.

And I for one, don't hope Grocka was wrong. I hope he was right, and that Verrier gets past it and becomes a great football player. It's a story that's all the more compelling - the player who had to leap over obstacles to make it.

Well said. most guys get a good level of maturity at around 27. Some, but not that many, have it years earlier.

No where to hide in this professional environment, which may help him work out what he needs to focus his energy on pretty quickly. Give him enough time to develop physically and hopefully he can get off the rookie list at some point and make it, as already stated he looks the pick of the bunch. Time will tell!!

Yep, you forget these guys have full time jobs at the age of 18! They learn very quickly and become more mature than most at their age so I would suggest many have dealt with similar problems.

Although his attitude is a little poor, Steven is determined to make it in the AFL. He is the one who, now he has accomplished his goal of making it onto an AFL list, hie will not take it for granted. He did the same thing when he played seniors for South Fremantle in the WAFL. He stepped up his ethic, and I can see him doing the same at an AFL level. He isn't the greatest speaker, which is one of the reasons why he wasn't picked up in the draft. He told me he didn't too well in the interviews, but FJ and Co. kept in contact with him, even though other clubs went off him as a draft prospect. He will be the pick of the lot, and whilst the comparison with Daniel Connors is a little unfair, it is also fairly close to the mark. He has plenty of upside, he takes the game on, is Skillful and can play a variety of roles, like Connors.. The difference between Steve and Daniel is Steve is a nuts and bolts player. He does all the basics really really well, and while he possesses the flashy moves, doesn't rely on them to be noticed. He is a solid player who puts the team above himself, which, Connors has only recently begun to realise constitutes what being an AFL player is all about. A team first mentality.
