Note: Warning this thread is a very long read.

The positive from the game in Perth was that our backline to some extent did okay considering West Coast had the fourth most inside 50s ever. Kennedy was held to 1 goal by Frawley. Garland, McDonald and Rivers all also played well.
Our backline still has a great nucleus to it with Frawley and Garland playing on the key forwards while Rivers being 3rd up and Grimes being the 'quarter back' in our side. McDonald also looked very good on Saturday and adds depth and eventually will probably take Rivers spot (Davis also looked very good during the NAB games so he adds some depth as well).
I think Bartram should be replaced by people who can dispose of the ball....when Strauss is ready to play again and once Tappy gets some form (play him either in the back/forward line). Joel MacDonald tries hard though makes too many mistakes at AFL level so IMO shouldn't be playing in our best 22. Sellar should only play against gorilla forwards like Warnock in previous years and Bennell/Bail should remain on the list of players who play when we need some dash out of defence/midfield or forward line.

The midfield is being smashed atm but when thinking about it we have our best 2 mids out...Sylvia and Moloney. When you think about this..West Coast's best stopper (Selwood) would of gone to Jones/Trengove meaning their input is severely hampered. Just think about Carlton's midfield and if Judd/Murphy were out, I doubt they'd be so dominant. We also had our second best ruck out meaning Jamar had to combat the best ruck duo in the game by himself. Because of this I will not rule our midfield as shit until Moloney and Sylvia return.
When thinking about our midfield Moloney, Sylvia, Jones, Watts (though I'd still play him as a half forward and eventually a centre half forward in 2 years), Trengove and Magner will fit in nearly every side. Though 1 problem in this list of players is that they are all inside mids other than Sylvia/Trengove who play both inside and outside and Watts who is an outside midfielder. Therefore we need to develop outside mids who have good disposal and make good decisions. This may be the reason Neeld is playing Watts in the middle as his disposal is good and he usually makes good decisions. So from a midfield perspective we probably need to find 2 more good outside players with good disposal. Morton should be given a shot at this role as in the juniors he was renowned for hitting players with both feet. I would give Davey one last chance and throw him back into the midfield as he was a player renowned for his foot skills. If he can't deliver and play well, he shouldn't be played at all as imo he looks shocking as a small forward. This leaves Gysberts, McKenzie, Bate and Couch who are depth inside mids. With Bail and Blease (once his endurance is picked up) as depth outside mids. Gysberts/McKenzie/Blease/Bail all need to fix their disposal in order to become good mids though.

Our rucks are very good. Jamar, Martin, Clark (should be played as a forward but doesn't mean he can't ruck at some time of the game, Gawn (who will eventually replace Jamar), Fitzpatrick (depth) and Spencer (Don't rate highly) spells a ruck devision with depth so there are no real problems there.

We can't judge our forwards from Saturday (ball never came) or last week (ball was bombed all day) but IMO this is the area where we need to look at in the drafts. When looking at some holes in our list we need some good small forwards to crumb from Clark, Howe, Jurrah, Watts (will be a gun...believe me). The game has passed Green and Davey and we should be looking at finding a crumber to play under Clark and Howe this year. How is Lawrence going in the VFL, I saw a few games last year and he looked alright? So Jetta (once he isn't injured), Bennell and Lawrence should be given a go as the small forward as this area as this is a hole I see in the side. ATM Davey, Bail and Bennell have been tried in this role but to date have failed.
Petterd is also in our best side and can be a descent performer in the future. Dunn is a depth player and IMO shouldn't be in our best 22.

Therefore Melbourne isn't in such a bad position when looking at our list (if you don't read the papers this week lol). We only need to find imo a small crumbing forward (Jetta?) and a classy outside mid (other than Sylvia/Trengove as they are both inside/outside, maybe Morton? or in the future Tappy?, though I can't see him not being an inside mid if he ever plays in the midfield ;)) with excellent foot skills.

Go DEES!!!

Jetta was my big hope for a small crumbing forward there have been times in the past where he's just had strokes of brilliant play. With some development I believed he could be a gun. Unfortunately he's so prone to injury that I'm not sure if he'll ever make it in our best side. I'm not certain he'll even get a game this year if that's the case and if he doesn't I wouldn't be surprised if he was delisted.

D117 - thanks for the incisive commentary. Well done. It is not easy to disagree with much of it. It says something about the innate resilience of our defence that they had to put up with the 4th highest number of entries into the F50 by an opposition side.

Neeld needs to stop this bleeding NOW

Our Rucks I think are going to be our strength except for Gawn & Spencer. I know Gawn is a cult figure around here but I just can't understand why you would draft a ruckman that has already had a knee recko, they should both be delisted at the end of the year.

I look at our side and I feel that most of our players would have no trouble finding a spot on another teams list.

We're a team full of players who would be good in other sides yet somehow they just don't gel as a unit

+1

It's a really frustrating situation.

Sorry for the intrusion.
I really feel for you guys.We were in the same boat 18 months ago.
Every body agreed that our list was shit.
But it can all turn around very quickly. You have some great young talent on your list. You just have to stick with them and have confidence in the coaching staff. I believe with Neeld you have a beauty, just give him time.
He will change the culture in time. You probably need to cut some of the dead wood and continue to move forward.
Good Luck.

Agree on both counts here - good stuff D117, lots of good info and well thought out.

I think what you say here is the key Biff. Our midfield is well known for being downhill skiers and ball watchers and this worked to an extent under Bailey who put attack well before defence, which has been well documented. This new game plan requires them to run hard the other way and they haven't quite figured out how to do that yet.

They showed some clips last week of our positioning around the contest as well and that takes some time. The bleeding we have right now does rest quite a bit with our midfield, but with Neeld having such a fantastic reputation when it comes to working with midfielders I think this will be rectified in time.

Quite a good read from a neutrals perspective D117. Sure beats the dribble you read these days in the herald sun and on the numerous footy shows. I think Melbourne have "the cattle" for the future, but in my opinion need a "greater desire" to step up to the next level as a team. I know this comes with experience though. Good luck for this season. You'll be fine!!!!

Go Blues!

This is what I have faith in. And if the mids don't improve under Royal (who should be doing what Neeld was at Collingwood) Neeld will move him on and bring in another of his own men.

Agreed Dav.

We could always make some enquiries about Ashton Hams pending Nicoski's form after injury.

Rubbish, Royal signed a 5 year deal didn't he??

That's just silly mate. Give Gawn a chance, he was drafted low, is earning next to nothing and could get his body right. Also a champion bloke by all reports. He has serious talent and serious height, a potent mix.

A positive thread? I thought that was illegal? I can hear 'hey positive thread. We don't take too kindly to your type around here.'

'Now now, Skeeter, they ain't hurtin nobody'

I actually think we have been rather calm in the face of what's been going on. That's not to say that we have just accepted it as we are frustrated and angry and upset we aren't playing well, but trust me when I say that I've seen far worse on here over the years.

A little positivity in these times will be worth it when we finally come out of it on the other side.

He will be another Newton mate, great bloke/talented blah blah.

And why is it silly. The way I look at it is we have 4 Rucks atm, Cook to develope into a kpf, Jurrah to come back in, Watts to be the gun forward. The way I see it Gawn is about 5th in line. he is a list clogger, move him on.

Very, very, very, very harsh. Ridiculously harsh in fact. The kid came in last year and looked okay for a few games and went down with an injury, and then again over the summer.

To compare him to Newton is grossly unfair on a young ruckman. He is 5th in line NOW but he is 20, not 26. Cut the kid some slack.

He was dropped after a couple of games last year and lets be honest didn't do anything, they are obviously blooding Fitzpatrick as a ruckman, Gawn is behind Clarke,Jamar,Martin. Seriously mate he is a 208cm ruckman that has done 2 knee's, unfortunate but reality. IMO Gawn should be gone.

Fitzy is being groomed as that ruckman as Gawn is injured and Martin and Jamar are playing ones.

I actually think he did do enough to warrant another contract. Totally agree that he has shown he is injury prone, no doubt about that, but we are not flush with ruck talent and the big fella has shown he is athletic enough at his height to be a good ruckman who can rest forward with a good set of hands.

Would be irresponsible to give up on him now. If he went down with another long term injury then you might suggest his career could be over, but just look at how long Jamar took to cement a spot in our side. It takes time.

Please spare me, I read his profile as well. He's played 4 games and had 2 knees, so what do we do give him a 2 year contract. ****ing frustates me the players they put faith in. I would rookie him and draft another ruckman.

Stupid comments on Gawn, if he is fit he will be a huge ruck, not just literally, but he has the rare ability to be useful around the ground, he chases and tackles...... he adds pressure it is really like having and extra man compared to many rucks.

But he has 2 knee reco's so being fit is the hard part, he has serious talent.

He marked a couple against essendon in the square is still only 21

Also i thought Royal was only around because we coulnt afford to pay out his contract this year, so Neeld had to keep him, all the other out of contract coaches got the arse

He's 20 with plenty of upside and deserves ONE more contract. Look at the Hawks with Bailey - they kept the faith and his knee injuries are behind him. If he goes down with another serious injury then that's fine, we can let him go, but he is still a young kid.

We will just have to agree to disagree mate.

We wouldnt be able to rookie him because he'd be drafted late, what the eff do you expect from a second year ruckman anyway?

This is why we are we're we are. Faith in players that other clubs would laugh at. He took 2 marks against Esendon big ****en deal! he also missed the goal directly infront. Move him on.
