I disclose that I support Celtic in the sense that they are my Scottish team (and I have seen them play - and win - an Old Firm derby). Therefore my Arsenal friend will assume bias.

The late penalty appeared to (maybe) brush Balde's arm, if at all, but it was almost certainly the wrong decision.

But the goals were:
1. Defence lost concentration so 3 Lyon forwards free in front of goal after set piece comes back off the bar
2. Poor goalkeeping - Hedman should have got a hand to that long shot and pushed it around the post
3. Poor technique by Balde - you just don't jump up like that with one arm up in the air in your own penalty area

So, very disappointing. And now Celtic don't have $4million qualifying money plus whatever more they would have earned in the next round to strengthen the squad.

So it becomes a spiral as the rich get richer and the rest drop back a bit - European Super League nudges ever closer.

Hopefully one better than last year in the UEFA Cup....

It was a penalty. You can claim bias with my view but its a clear penalty, as it touched his arm inside the box. Celtic might seem cheated but it was a penalty. If I was them, I would be blaming Hedman, who for the 2nd time in this CL group stage, let in a long range shot, that he should of saved. Both times it would of meant an away draw, instead of an away loss.

At least they have the UEFA Cup to look forward to

But it has to be hand (or arm) to ball for it to be a penalty, not the other way round so just because it touched his arm doesn't make it a foregone conclusion. If anyone remembers (probably won't) the Italy v Chile game in 98 WC when Baggio got a penalty when the ball was kicked into a Chilean's hand? It was widely believed that that was definitely the wrong decision.

Of course I haven't seen this Celtic incident so I don't know as yet what happened exactly.

I have seen it and Bobo was in the wrong. He jumped for the ball at a free kick and raised his arm and the ball brushed it, so it was a penalty. The penalty at the 98 World Cup is completely different, it was when the ball was crossed by the Italian and he kicked it stright into the Chilian's hand which was beside him, so it should of been deemed an accident and play on. Clear difference between the two and as Bobo had his arm raise in going for the ball it had to be a penalty, because he used his arm in playing for the ball. He was unlucky the ball made contact, but that changes nothing.

Listened to the match over the net on Radio Clyde this morning and it sounded like we got absoloutely killed.

We were always going to struggle without Thompson and Agathe. Haven't seen the penalty incident yet, so I'll reserve judgement (won't base my judgement on O'Neill's reactions, as his Euro outbursts over the past couple of seasons have become a bit cringeworthy).

Anyway, tell all the Huns you know, that we're still in Europe, they're no'.

You got it in one Robbie. They went up 1-0 in Muenchen, then proceeded to self-destruct. Sure Makaay's goal was sick, but Hedman's totally stuff-up resulting in his second was pure amateurish defending.

Furthermore against a pretty weak Bayern side with 4 defenders on yellows they were unable to get past the Gorilla, despite several very tough chances.

From all reports the Bayern match against Anderlecht was a complete horror. FCB got a penalty, but it was RSCA that had several chances during the second half.

Had they gone in it would have been FC Bayern saying goodbye to Europe again. And not Celtic.

The sooner you lot get out of Scotland, the better prepared youy will be at learning the tricks of the trade about winning on the continent.

Your fans do deserve more success than they get. I'll give both Old Firm clubs that much!

And make no mistake, Lyon are a very good side- especially in midfield when you just look at the choices they have there. Carriere (who IMHO should have been taken to the 2002 World Cup as a Zidane replacement) was on the bench but he came on I believe, and they can also boast the likes of Essien and Dhorashoo in their squad. None too shabby.

I've heard that if Celtic failed to reach the last 16 they may be forced to sell Larsson if a decent bid came along, and Newcastle were doing more than sniffing around. Although I don't mind Celtic I was secretly hoping they'd slip up so this can eventuate.

Celtic are known for finding weird and wonderful ways of shooting themselves in the foot. This morning was typical. Henrik has stated that this is his last season in Paradise. Celtic do not " have" to sell him, they have more money then they know what to do with , yes the old buiscut tin is over flowing and no-where near the hun`s massive debt.

Looked a clear pen to me, put your hands in the air and the ball to hand is no excuse. I'd be gutted if it wasn't given to City, I suspect you'd be the same if it wasn't given to Spurs. Celtic are my Scottish team as well, but I don't really have any complaints.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for you your post wasn't whingy whiny enough for you to win the whingy whiny girly sook award of the day. ;)

Celtic said a few days ago that they would not sell Larsson reagrdless of the result, and if it meant that he ran down his contract then so be it. They also said that they were still hoping to convince him to play another year.

When he goes, I doubt it will be to someone like Newcastle. It'll either be back to Sweden or with a club with a shot at a major trophy IMO.

Although having just heard Martin O'Neills post match comments you were never in with a shot anyway.

Looked like a United or Liverpool manager of the future with that display of excuses and blame shifting.

First of all I should declare that one my missus is a Lyon girl so they're the only team I really have a soft spot for and secondly I don't really like Celtic (nor Rangers for that matter).

I thought Lyon deserved to win the game, Celtic got absloutely slaughtered in midfield and both of their second goal was pure luck combined with poor defeding. Why Muller and Deflandre didn't start, I don't know. I think Carrière probably could have come into the match a bit earlier, perhaps for Govou who was losing it a bit. Juninho was my man of the match. As for the penalty, I think Celtic fans have a fair case to claim it wasn't but IMHO it would have been injust for them to go onto the next stage in front of Lyon who I think can give thier next opponent a fright at least.

I think the draw is tomorrow and if Lyon get one of the Spanish (or Porto) teams we'll probably head over to watch the tie.

Rewind 2 years ago, Rangers go on to the next round and Celtic go out, yet your fans claim that the UEFA Cup is a Micky Mouse Cup, yet 2 years later......

Upset about the result on Tuesday yes, upset Celtic are still in Europe and we aren't????? Nope.

But not really in that manner. Yes you nearly made it, but really was the result a true reflexion of the match??? Yes, you were outplayed and really should of lost by more, but you hung in there. In any case I couldn't believe the crap coming out of the Celtic camp in the lead up, on how they were going to romp in and everything, yet their CL away record is dreadful. In terms of everything the way the group finished up was a true relexion on the group.

True, but it was widely tipped that Celtic would wait until after the CL group stage to decide wether to cash in or not.

Sadly windy thats bull****, your in debt to the tune of at least 17million pounds, the board won't hand O'Neill any cash to even get a free transfer in (Dani and de la Pena) and even with the money you made from your UEFA Cup Final run, you posted a loss for the season. To say your cashed up is a lie, your in a better position than Rangers at least.

On Rangers debt, most of its long term debt and isn't even due for at least 25 years. Smartly the club has cut its spending to lower the debt and running costs. Wait until the next financial reports comes out, the money we got from the sales of Ferguson, Amoruso, McCann and co and their huges wages off the wage bill will make for better reading.

That would be like listening to Rte

Some of the crap he has come up with in the last year is beyond belief. I have never once heard him comment on the other team when Celtic lose, its always the refs fault and the comments after the UEFA Cup Final took the cake, soreloser doesn't even begin to decribe him. I think Chris Sutton took lessions from him

Very very harsh penalty decision for mine. Can't believe I avoided the result all day to see that!

But to be fair, Celtic didn't really deserve a point. Hedman was useless and as pointed out the midfield was smashed. Lyon are a quality side so I knew it would be a struggle.

Oh well, UEFA Cup here we come.

I felt I was in with a shout for most annoyingly reasonable post of the day at least.

Please post details of Celtic`s financial state

Now windyhill, I got this from the horses mouth (ie Celtic's official website)

From Celtic PLC's Annual Report 2003

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RESULTS
- UEFA Cup Finalists.
- Turnover increased by 6.5% to £60.57m
- Profit from operations up 25.3% to £6.73m from £5.37m.
- Write off of deferred tax and advance corporation tax of £5.86m
- Loss after tax £11.66m (2002 : £3.04m).
- Year-end debt £17.78m (2002: £16.47m).

Now what was that you were saying??? The old buiscut tin is over flowing, not when you lose £11.66m, up from £3.04m the year before and even you debt rose. Heck what if you didn't get the £10+ for making the UEFA Cup Final??? Plus lets not get into your players, they don't have high re-sale value's.
