are you some kind of idiot seruously how do u say he is anacountable when we would be our most accountable small backman we have in the team i would hate to see wat u would have to say about rains king and mcmahon then so then who would be the most accountable then bowden hahahaha

You're kidding, right? I've lost count of the number of bags I've seen kicked on Newman.

Raines at least tries to stick to his man, but he's not a defender either.

Bowden often puts his own game ahead of the team's - he's personally lost us a few games over the last 3 years.

King made some pretty fundamental mistakes, especially in the first half of the year (although to his credit he improved more than I would have believed he could).

Players don't exactly quake in fear when they hear they're lining up against McMahon.

As much as I hate to admit it to myself, Kellaway and Gaspar held our defence together for a long time, if only by reliably choking supply to their opponents. We might be rebounding better now (and I agree, Newman is a decent rebounder), but we're leaking a hell of a lot more goals.

He had a good year considering he was recovering from a badly broken leg.

I think he should play in the midfield, especially with Morton likely to be moved into defence. Newman is good enough to push into the middle.

Was top 9 in 2007 and considering his injury should improve again this year, but even so if blokes like Newman and King are in our top 10 players by the end of the year it will mean we are still on the bottom.

A few stats to chuck around:

2001 - For 312-254 2126, Against 285-263 1973, 4th - Frawley.
2002 - For 257-259 1801, Against 317-270 2172, 14th - Frawley.
2003 - For 270-226 1846, Against 302-266 2078, 13th - Frawley.
2004 - For 246-217 1693, Against 362-273 2445, 16th - Frawley.
2005 - For 294-258 2022, Against 323-252 2190, 12th - Wallace.
2006 - For 278-266 1934, Against 323-307 2245, 9th - Wallace.
2007 - For 285-248 1958, Against 370-317 2537, 16th - Wallace.

Couple of interesting things. We have leaked more scoring shots (including goals) in each of Wallace's years but the comparisons of each '16th' season are fairly similar. Our scoring however, has remained fairly stable through the Wallace years while it reduced each year with Frawley. My read on it is that we are capable of attacking and scoring until the kids bodies give out and then the scores against mount up, especially as we have reduced the average age of our backline more over these years than the forward line. Not a war winner or a 'proof' of anything substantial but interesting nonetheless.

Bowden has played a 'team game' by taking the best opposition key forward for the past 3 yrs. Only player to have the wood on him is R Robertson.

Agree with you on Newman though, he has had a lot of small bags kicked on him. I have watched him play through juniors and I can not believe he is not in the midfield - he is a natural ball winner, unassuming in the midfield but very damaging.

Totally agree. No idea how such a rubbish defender gets praised week-in week-out.

Should be instructed never to set foot in the back 50 ever again, and his teammates given leave to spear-tackle him if he even looks like trying.

One of the most unaccountable players on our list.

Nice long kick though. Loved that centre sqaure goal at Subi. In your collective faces, west coast.
that was against Freo not west coast

Add to that the fact our backline was in a similar position in 2004 that it was last year. Gaspar was coming off a knee reco and seldom played in defense, while Kellaway had easily his worst season for the club playing injured much of the year. Some genius decided it was a smart idea to trade Holland and pay part of his wages at Melbourne, and Ray Hall (who they also flirted with trading) got stuck with the expectation of instantly going from backup ruckman to no.1 key defender.

On top of that, Duncan Kellaway played one game for the year and Coughlan played seven. I don't think I'll ever forget the games where Ben Marsh was rucking to Fleming, Nicholls, and Fiora, with Weller playing CHB, Zantuck playing FB, and Gaspar masquerading as a footballer at CHF. We were so bad we threw a 17yo Jackson into the middle in the hope that he might get a kick - as opposed to the people who were there.

Some people may forget just how bad the list Wallace inherited was. I don't...2004 was the definition of humiliation.

I am astounded that the majority have voted him in the top 6.

I think Brown, Richo, Deledio, Foley and Simmonds are all a class above. I wouldn't even put him in with Tuck, Coughlan, etc for actual performances, nor with Raines, Thursfield and Tambling for potential.

The guy is an honest foot soldier who would have made his mark by now if he was gonna become one of the top 6 in the team. How many other teams had a top 6 player in the back pocket? I can only really think of Wanganeen (at times).

It is astounding TD.

Perhaps those who rated him top-6 should be stating which of the six you mention makes way for Newman? That'd be even more amusing I'm sure.
aigh i put him top 6 now at this point in time i would put him above alot of younger players this is how i rate the top 6

foley
brown
richo
polak
newman
deledio

the ony reason i put newman above deledio is because newman is older in the coming year i would put deledio ahead of him
