Stafford looked to be in good form and Richardson was on fire.
Bowden is showing glimpses of returning to form and their game today against the Dees read very similar to our match.

We definitely have to win the midfield battle in that game if we are to win. Their forwards may be able to expose us if we are not playing well. Hopefully Richardson wont kick straight, and Stafford will be beaten by Gardiner.

Is Collica due for a recall soon? He would be very handy in this game, hopefully Ready will be back as well

Richmond have been a bogey side for us for years now, irrespective of where the two sides sit on the ladder, theyve always seemed to have the wood on us.

Now is the time to put and end to it.

Going to be a seriously tough game. We have to continue our midfield dominance. Campbell is coming back for this game, and he always plays well against us. Same goes for Richardson who always seems to find the ability to kick straight against us. He was really playing well against Melbourne. This is definitely a game where Big Cox needs to step up and help Gardiner. For those of you who didnt see the Richmond - Melbourne game, Stafford hyper-extdended his knee (rather nastily I might add), and although was able to return and play, he played a forward role rather than in the ruck. This left the Tigers without a recognised ruckman in Vardy. We have to take advantage of the situation, if Stafford rucks, he cant be 100% fit. Gardiner and Cox must be relentlessly slaming th ball down our midfielders throats.

At the commencement of the game last night Richmond had the least Points against in the AFL. Its going to be the No 1 offense vs No 1 defense. Lets just see how we stack up against it.

Biggest danger game of the year, we have to win this game.

WE MUST SHUT DOWN RICHO!

If our midfield continues to shine, and our defence is solid, I'm positive that our forwards and running midfielders will be able to kick a winning score.

yeah they do.

by my record at the start of the year there were 3 teams who had the wood over us for the last couple of seasons. they are (or were) St Kilda, Geelong and Richmond. These are teams that I thought that we always had a good change against but just couldn't beat.

Our defence really have to shut Richo down and make sure Stafford stays away from the forward line! If we can do that, we can win!

I am not sure if Macca is up to the job on Richo. I would maybe persist with Carroll on him and have Macca as the one to duel up on him with Carroll.

Richo is the danger player, so unpredictible and that is what makes him dangerous. I think Gardy and Sux will overcome Stafford.

Yeah, but our Gardy is just as good, if not better than Stafford to drift down and kick a goal or two.

Against us, historically Richmond have a shocking record at Subiaco, we lead 7-1 overall, with Richmond's only win being in 2001 when most teams could send over their reserves and beat us. Notably Richmond never played us at the WACA either.

Richmond have won seven of the last eight encounters between us (hence the bogey side concept), however since 1995 Richmond have travelled west to play us just twice (even Collingwood have been here more often). In ten games since the beginning of '95, we've played Richmond five times at the MCG, twice at Docklands and once at Optus. Certainly helps their chances of being our bogey side never playing on our territory.

They may well have been here a few times to play Freo and won those.

Interesting! So what your saying is that our record would be alot better if we had played them in Perth a few times?? Well that is a positive. I think one way in which we can exploit the Tiges is by playing with a greater intensity than them. If the tiges have one major weakness it is that they dont always play with much intensity. Sometimes their minds are not on the game.

Firstly, with Fremantle, it's certainly true that Richmond's record in WA is much better against them then it has been against the Eagles. In WA, we have a 4-3 winning record against Fremantle, and a 9-4 winning record against them overall.

And it's certainly true that the Richmond's record against the Eagles has been distorted recently by the vast majority of clashes being played in Victoria.

The battles between the two sides in Victoria have gone in quite unusual and interesting patterns. Richmond won the first three clashes in Victoria from 1987-89, all definitely missed opportunities for the Eagles as Richmond were going through the most dismal period in their history.

Under Malthouse, West Coast turned things around by winning 5 consecutive matches against Richmond from 1990-94. But since then, Richmond have re-gained the ascendancy, winning 8 of the last 9 clashes in Victoria, often when West Coast was expected to win.

In WA, the trend of the matches has been much more predictable. Richmond infamously threw away victory in the first ever match against the Eagles in 1987, losing after being 33 points at three quarter-time.

And for a while, it was as close as we got to winning against West Coast at Subi. Under Malthouse, Richmond never got close, losing convincingly on 5 occasions. The losses in 1994 and 1998 were especially costly, as they were probably the difference between the Tigers making and not making the finals in those years.

Richmond's first win against the Eagles in WA occurred in 2001, and it was a convincing victory by over 6 goals (I still have the game on tape). West Coast couldn't handle Richo who easily beat Trent Carroll and kicked 6 goals (as well as give away 3 50-metre penalties). Rogers also bobbed up with 5 goals, beating his opponent David Wirrapunda.

Incredibly this year will be the first time ever that the Eagles haven't played Richmond in Victoria during a season. Probably the biggest anomoly of the draw since it became uneven in 1987.

As for this Saturday night's match, it should be a good contest. I would say that for Richmond to win it needs Campbell back in the side fit and firing. West Coast's midfield is top notch and Richmond needs all it's available resources in this area to overcome it. The main trio of Campbell, Coughlan and Johnson will do well, but also the likes of Fiora and the notoriously unreliable Bowden to stand up and back them.

Put Glass on him IMO. Glass likes to get very physical in his defensive play, whereas Richo has a history of losing the plot if he gets frustrated (usually close physical marking has that effect).

Chick needs to play. Without him we lose a lot of physical presence.

Haynes must go. With him onfield we've been basically playing with 17 men. Give Seaby or McDougall or Wilson a run, couldn't do any worse than Haynes.

Cox isn't doing too well at the moment, but with Gardiners dominance he doesn't get much opportunity to get into the game. Probably lacking match practice and fitness. Our best 2nd ruckman anyway, can't drop him despite what people on here say.

wow, I never realised that Richmond never came over to Subiaco to play us. In the 90s all the Eagles vs Richmond games seemed to be at the MCG at night. I do remember the 2001 game and Richo was very good. I was more impressed with Bowden and Rogers as we didn't have anyone to keep them quiet.

Bowden was in good form last night against Melbourne, so we'll need Chick possibly to be the 'go with' man for him.

Would be good to see Coughlan play in the flesh too - he looks so exciting on TV.

Do we bring back Collica or Phil Read to play on either Krakouer or Rodan?

Glass should be given first crack at Richo, also, we need a strong marking forward or two - the thought of Gaspar (SNR) on Haynes is just embarrasing, we need someone who can physically match it with him, ala Wilson - the lack of a tall forward is going to hurt us eventually, and without Willo this could be the week.

Not quite - we haven't failed to play Geelong in Victoria in any year as yet (this year is yet to come). Every year but one has been at Kardinia Park (the other was 1991 at Waverley). That said Geelong are the team we have played the most.

I wonder why this is? I doubt we have a following at Kardinia Park and I'm sure the club wouldn't make a request to play an away game in Geelong EVERY year.

My theory is that the Cats need to play a certain amount of home games at Kardinia Park each year and they need non-Victorian teams or low attending Melbourne based teams to make up the numbers.

I'm still not too confident that we can win this game. But it's gonna be a great atmosphere, and the crowd will be big this week, personally I reckon it will go close to a sell out.

Saturday night games at Subi always have an awesome atmosphere, remember Sydney last year? Awesome game.
