Perth join Super 14
December 10, 2004

THE Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has announced that Perth have been chosen as the fourth Australian team for the expanded Super 14 rugby competition in the 2006 season.

Perth beat Melbourne in a vote among ARU board members here Friday. They join Australia's three teams in the current Super 12 competition - ACT Brumbies, NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds.

The Perth bid emphasised the city's location on Australia's west coast as a stopping off point for Super 14 teams from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Their application was supported by a $25 million government-backed upgrade of its planned home ground and public support from Wallabies captain George Gregan.

I guess we need to start thinking of names now?

Congratulations to Perth!

Whilst I am disappointed Melbourne didnt win the bid, I was always expecting Perth to get over the line. I would like to know why Perth was chosen above Melbourne, just as a matter of interest. IMO Melbourne's bid was very re-active. WA Govt announce $25 million upgrade of Members Equity Stadium and then Melbourne trumps them with the $100m upgrade to Olympic Park. Perth had the money in the bag, whereas Melbourne's came very late! The Melbourne, and Victorian public, just didnt seem to embrace it as much as the WA public, not until it looked like it was a landslide win to WA then they played all their cards....too late though!!

A great day for RugbyWA and a very disappointing day for the VRU and a VERY historic day for Rugby Union in Australia.

Good luck to Perth! :)

Sack the VRU Board.

Mr Gillles ... you're a good bloke ... can't ref for ********, but geez .. getting beaten to the punch by a bunch of Western Australians?

Congrats to WA.

Hope our comp, and Rugby here in Victoria, doesn't suffer. The government need to pump some money into the VRU. Some of the grounds that i've had to play on since moving down to melbourne 5-6 years ago, have been very VERY ordinary!

Won't happen. The New Zealand Rugby Union was opposed to another team ... and rightly so. SANZAR like to claim that this is the premier provincial rugby competition ... it won't be in future. The rugby talent is going to spead over more teams, weakening the competition.

Bad move ... driven by greed.

The (RL) Western Reds had a great name and logo, and their Superleague era uniforms weren't too bad either. It's a pity that S12 already has Reds because it would be nice to see the identity resurrected (with or without the bad smell of the NRL fiasco).

Western Devils?
Western Miners?
Western Predators?

And I wonder what colours we will wear? Not sure the Hurricanes would like us wearing gold and black too much...

Nothing wrong with that.

I still stand by "West Australian/Western Falcons".

Bit adjacent to AFL's West Coast Eagles. Two WA bird teams. ;)

There are heaps of suggestions, but none of them really standout. In the Australian Shield competition we are Perth Gold, I quite like that name.

Don't mind the Falcons or Stingrays .. "Go Stingers!" has a nice ring to it :p.

I don't mind too much right now, we got the bloody team :).

The Australian Super 14 names cannot be based on the name of cities. It MUST be representing the whole state. Ie, ACT, QLD, NSW.
