Story in RL Review that WARL are aiming to get a side into the NRL for the 2012 season. in order to further these aims, they want to have a team in either the Queensland Cup, or the Jim Beam Cup from the 2008 season.

Originally, the WARL was looking at the Queensland Cup, but were told by ARL officials that the Jim Beam Cup was the more viable option (less travelling than the Queensland Cup, who are dispersed over a bigger area).

WARL operations manager Bill Norworthy stated "We need to have a Perth side playing in the NRL. We are confident of getting the corporate support, and are planning to pay our travel costs to our away matches. By playing in either the Queensland Cup or the Jim Beam cup would show that we can handle being in such a competition (NRL). That would put us in good shape for the NRL because we would have proved that we can look after ourselves."

WA has a large number of juniors for a non heartland state, but these have been in decline since the demise of the Western Reds.

Clearly the next stage in NRL expansion should include WA & also Wellington. Hopefully Gallop can convince the paymasters at News Ltd that this will be good for the game.

one expression i can give..... WOOHOO!. Was a fanantical Western Red fan but was really annoyed when we lost our team. Always liked League (esp Im from Sydney town myself) and it doesnt hurt to like a few different codes.

Whilst WA is AFL mad, and will always be so, they do support their local teams.

There certainly has been talk in League circles that a WA team will be icluded by this date, it is just that it hasn't been 'megaphoned' from every hill in the land.

Well if the League expands to allow Perth in, will they go to an 18th club and if so, who?

I'd want the Bears back on the CC, this area north shore and CC has something like 800,000 with no team to actively support. It would also stiffle the AFL and union growth in Sydney.

The last thing the NRL needs is another Western Reds or Adelaide Rams fiasco.

If they want to venture into WA, that is fine, but they need to make a huge commitment to growing the game there. For example, they need to ensure the team survives for at least 20 years - it's no use giving it a couple of years and pulling out again.

They will have to compete not only with the AFL teams, but also with the Western Force who have done amazingly well with their recruiting (even if they have stolen a huge amount of Qld talent).

I doubt another of those incidents will happen. Super League was a probable one off event...

...I don't think the 'Super Rugby' Concept will survive the next TV Deal anyway. No one watches the sport in Australia anymore and the corporates are beginning thier exodus.

I'd be looking at including a CC team, a second team from NZ and a Pacific Islands team before going back to Perth. At least wait and see what sort of long term support the Force can achieve first.

hope they come up with a better name the last rugby team started in WA lol... meh Carn the broncos

In this morning courier mail talk is that a WA team is going to enter the Qld cup. This would be a first step and a good one.
Lets them get an idea of costs etc and it is a good standard of football with NRL players turning out for most clubs most weeks.
The big thing with perth is getting the local comp in a postion to start producing more NRL players.

Yep.. also states this in the start of the thread

Actually the Perth team has just recently changed their mind and is joining the NSWRL Jim Beam Cup competition instead.

Wow, I hope they go well and finally get a team back in the big time again.
The axing the Gold Coast Chargers and Western Reds was the second worst decision made in the history of rugby league in Australia. Perth should be back in by 2010 at the latest.

well said but what would you consider the worst? seriously i think there'll be a team in WA very soon especially the amount of ex-patriates in Perth from NSW, QLD, England, NZ and just random rugby fans. If the NRL want to succeed in expansion Perth has to be top priority as its now the fastest growing region after the Gold Coast In Australia.

Geez they must have made a lot of good decisions and made very few mistakes then!

Things were going from strength to strength until SL came along and set rl back 10+ years. And why did SL happen? Because of the Broncos, who had gotten so powerful from not having any competition in a rl mad city.

Putting just one team in Brisbane.

The Crushers came in in 1995, the Same year as Fremantle in the AFL, though the WCE started in 1986 and the Broncos in 1988.

RL might have been better off if Valleys and Redcliffe were succesful with thier applications to join the NSWRL in the early 1980's. A side for all the fans not taken in by the Diehards and the Dolphins could have been introduced later. But it's not to be.

I still think Redcliff could be a decent chance down the road, everything about them seems very professional, I hope another Sth QLD team gets back in the comp within 15 years, they'd be my choice.:thumbsu:

Ditto, Redcliffe are the best chance of another SEQ team getting into the NRL. Here's hoping that the NRL admits them not long after Perth gets in (2010/2011).
