Story in RL Review that WARL are aiming to get a side into the NRL for the 2012 season. in order to further these aims, they want to have a team in either the Queensland Cup, or the Jim Beam Cup from the 2008 season.
Originally, the WARL was looking at the Queensland Cup, but were told by ARL officials that the Jim Beam Cup was the more viable option (less travelling than the Queensland Cup, who are dispersed over a bigger area).
WARL operations manager Bill Norworthy stated "We need to have a Perth side playing in the NRL. We are confident of getting the corporate support, and are planning to pay our travel costs to our away matches. By playing in either the Queensland Cup or the Jim Beam cup would show that we can handle being in such a competition (NRL). That would put us in good shape for the NRL because we would have proved that we can look after ourselves."
WA has a large number of juniors for a non heartland state, but these have been in decline since the demise of the Western Reds.
Clearly the next stage in NRL expansion should include WA & also Wellington. Hopefully Gallop can convince the paymasters at News Ltd that this will be good for the game.
