Pretty cool little gadget. You just plug your usb harddrive/flash media into it, and it'll output media to your entertainment system through your choice of HDMI or Composite.

It's HDMI output is capable of providing full 1080P.

Pretty versatile. Plays most media formats including AVI files. And its tiny, only 120mm wide and 40mm high so you can hide it easily in you entertainment unit.

I use my Xbox360 to do the same job, but if you didn't want a games console to use as a media player this looks like a pretty sweet option.

I've wanted one of these for a while now. Trying to save so purchasing something like this is completely out of the question.
If you keep a whole stack of programs on an external HD then this is a perfect unit to avoid the masses of burnt discs lying around.

Yeah I would've purchased one of these but I've already got a HDD with remote connected to both my network and tv, so it does the same thing.
WD make some beautiful devices.
When your mate purchases it, tell him to go to the WD site and download the firmware upgrade. Apparently they've added some more media formats to the supported list. :thumbsu:

i was lucky to win one at a training night,

i found a good compression suite of software which works slightly better than the arcsoft that comes with it.

its the imtoo conversion suite, found it on the torrent sites, also has easy to use conversion software for ipod etc, and no watermarks.

i found it on torrentpond

connected with a hdmi cable through a sound system its awesome.

thanks tiger cleavage
with full 1080p movies at only around 4 gb downloads its a very nice little gadget.

720p downloads are smaller and not much lost in quality.

Would it play more video file types than the 360?

I had been trying to find one of these from a reputable company for the past 18 months but have been using the 360 for the past 3-4 months now.

what format are you using borgsta, the main one it uses is h.264, but i have xvid torrents mainly, there has been a recent firmware update to support more formats

yeah not sure mate

I use the 360 for my media too, but mainly just AVI's and .mov files.

The 360 doesn't play those new HD formats which is a pain

i know cds arent dead but dvds will go the same way as cd and hard drive media players and other media players will take over,
yeah i dont know i'm not really an expert in this area but common sense says at the moment its just easier to add a couple of usb slots to the dvd recorder and the ability to read the files which is all this device does. Who knows what will happen in the future....

can i just ask whats the point of this program? Does it just rip dvds and put them in avi format?

One problem i've struck with this is it doesnt play HD videos (mkv) with the DTS audio encoding so you need to buy a receiver or home entertainment system as well! Kind of annoying considering it plays just about everything else.

I think it's not a bad assumption to assume most people who want the digital audio would have a proper sound system

to me its amazing how many people put quality of sound second to video ??.

some spend thousands on tvs etc but wouldnt put out the cash for the audio

In my defence i am a uni student so therefore poor. Considering price and the simplicity of the product ($200), i dont think its really aimed at the diehards who have expensive home theater systems either.

I've had it for a few weeks now, and besides the dodgy remote (only dodgy when using HDMI, works fine with component?) I'm very happy with it. New firmware 1.02 should be out soon.

I see that a few places are now dropping their prices to the $160-$180 range.

wasnt aiming the statement directly at you i just know a lot of people who do this,

we are selling at $176 at the moment,

i use my logitech harmony remote, it is supported and it will control anything audio/video equipment you can throw at it.

its my one piece of must have technology,

nah thats fine mick, was just saying from reading the whirlppol thread apparently there are more expensive systems (popcorn or something?) with network connections and things like that for people really interested. This was aimed at the simple and cheaper end of the market i think.
