ARL Gives WA Reds Green Light

The Australian Rugby League today provided the long awaited formal approval allowing the WA Reds to participate in the Sydney based Jim Beam Cup competition from 2008, announced WARL Chairman, Geoff Baldwin.

“There has been an enormous amount of work over many years to get us back to this turning point for Rugby League in WA and we see this as step one in our quest for a Perth based team to re-enter the National Rugby League in future years, Mr Baldwin said.

“The decision by the ARL recognises Western Australia as a growth market for the national game of Rugby League.

“Our organising committee is relieved to receive the go ahead and very excited about the challenges ahead as the journey back to the top begins.

“This has arguably been one of the most important decisions in Rugby League since 1998 when we lost the Western Reds franchise. Rugby League is a major national game and it needs to be in Perth for the sake of the talent we are producing locally and our supporter base that has been starved in recent years.”

“Based on the average crowds attracted by the Western Reds in the nineties, we know we have a good level of support in WA and we expect this support base to grow as people see our team begin to build over the next 6 months.

“Since we announced our strategy in November last year we have had to meet certain financial and planning commitments to the ARL most of which we have achieved ahead of schedule and with the official sanction we can now approach the campaign in earnest!

“Currently we have two of four major sponsorships filled and we are in advanced negotiation with a third and expect to finalise a full book of sponsorships within the next three months on the back of this confirmation.

“The WA Reds have played in 2007 as the state representative team and have taken all before them going through undefeated to win the National Championships then having 11 representatives selected for the National Affiliated Sates side which played in July.

WARL General Manager, Bill Nosworthy added that the structure around this team will see an improved local club competition and stronger pathways for our junior development program.

“In 2007 we have seen the best level of competition since the 90’s between the eight local clubs on the back of players returning to WA to stake their claim for inclusion in the inaugural Reds side.

“The WA Reds will need to recruit some strong forwards to build the side a little more prior to kick off in 2008 but the belief of head coach Chris Dever is that the talent across the field is already here and it is now more a matter of conditioning”, Mr Nosworthy said.

Strange . I didn't know Kalgoorlie and Rockingham were local .
Didn't say that he had to combine two divisions to get 8 team league .
And that a few teams are mergers of old teams .

The sooner the Reds are back in the comp the better. The NRL should have them playing in the top comp within 10 years, hopefully less. Certainly it would be great for the growth oif the game

I think they've missed the boat to be honest
The Reds arrived on the back of of Sydney influx post America's Cup .
The NRL was on TV and the local league was growing .
There was a lot less competition .
Those Sydney arrivals are a lot older now .
The NRL has only been on TV for about half a season with poor ratings .
The WARL has been troubled for some time .
You now have the Eagle , Dockers and Force strong .
the Force has stuffed the stadium issue up big time
and there'll be no cheap high class stadiums to play in .

.

Don't hold your breath about the NRL helping, their agenda is keeping cost to a minimum. Your only hope is the ARL to bring them in once (fingers crossed) the News scum f*** o**.

What news really want is teams from Sydney to either go bust or relocate, thats why we don't get the money we should from TV, they are doing it on purpose so they can cull Sydney teams like they always wanted to do, if I owned a Sydney club, I'd consider getting out first and making a go of it in WA, SA or the CC because once they tighten it up more, we could have 3-4 teams needing help, they all can't relocate.

The same thing is going to happen in the AFL in the future with Melbourne teams.

WA Reds played their first pre-season game against last year's Jim Beam Cup grand finalist the Sydney Bulls and came away with a 32-22 win.

About 6-700 in attendance.

A few threads here about the Reds and other emerging states.

Well done fellas on the long road back :thumbsu:

That would have to be considered a good crowd a) for a trial match and b) a Jim Beam Cup level match.

You would think they would be pushing for crowds of 1500 plus once the real stuff starts. So good signs indeed.

Agree, more than I thought would turn up.

If the Reds can build up slowly and get things right, they might just force the hands of News LTD by showing they can cope and they do have the support.

News will find it hard to knock them back if they start averaging 1,500-3,000 against pub teams with no traveling support.

Pity the South Aussies didn't decide to do the same thing as the Reds, really put the cat amongst the pigeons by 2012 :D

Venue: North Beach Rugby League Club (off Kitchener Street)

Aranmore! Haha! I imagine that's a Craig Phillis (North Beach player) connection. He is a teacher and my old coach there. Still they're a union school so I'm not sure what they're doing playing league.

Good to hear the crowd was bigger than last week.

Great sign for the Reds and the code in general in Perth. Pity about the result, but I would be fair in saying that the Queensland Cup is a step up from the Jim Beam Cup and to as well as the Reds did in such a lose must be a good sign for the season ahead.

Should be some pics up soon hopefully.

Will be good to see and please keep us all up to date with not only the progress of the Reds in this thread, but the Jim Beam Cup in another if you like (on this sub-board). The more people are informed about the lower divisions of RL in Australia the better informed they hopefully will be when they talk about the state of the code in general.

Its clearly better than some people on BF think and its this boards job to put the information out there.

Yeah the QLD cup would be a massive step up, half the teams in that comp would give a fair few SL teams a run.

Will do, I'll do my best to update the Reds every week, there looks to be enough supporters here for them to put in stuff as well if one of the usual guys goes missing for a bit.

REDS JUST MISS IN COURAGEOUS JIM BEAM CUP DEBUT

After a less than ideal travelling schedule that saw the team arrive late on Friday night via a delayed flight from Perth through Melbourne, the WA Reds came agonisingly close to a historic first victory in their opening game against the Chester Hill Rhinos in Sydney yesterday.

The WA team went down by four points (24 - 28. Both sides scored 5 tries with the difference coming down to conversions.

They led three times during the game only to fall away at the very end with inexperience and fatigue taking their toll according to Coach Chris Dever.

"Theirs no doubt fatigue set in late in the game and it's something we are going to have to get used to along with the travel.

"We'll have to learn how to play the game at this level after long journeys but more importantly, to capitalise on our strengths and push home the advantage when we are in a winning position such as we were on several occasions yesterday.

"We didn't play as well as we did in the trials but it is early days and we will only get better with experience.

Young fullback, Ben Lindegaard, who returned to League after a stint with Union, took his place in history by scoring the new Reds first try but the Rhinos quickly responded with two easy tries to lead 12 - 4 after 20 minutes.

A terrific try by Ryan Dickson after a long breakaway by Tyrone Coppedge was converted by Mick Kestel then the Reds hit the lead with a Craig Phillis try after great work by the forwards.

The Rhinos scrored again but, five minutes from half time, Taurean Sheehan, who replaced the injured Isaac Thomas, finished off some terrific work from the Reds forwards and allowed them to go to the break 20 - 18.

The Reds began the second half badly allowing a Rhinos try after attracting two penalties in the first two minutes.

The game then reverted to an arm wrestle as both sides battled to gain advantage.

The Reds scored again to retake the lead 24 - 22 when replacement Stephen Gerardi scored a fine individual try after dazzling the opposition defence.

But with eight minutes to go, luck went against the Reds following a couple of penalties and the Rhinos went 4 in front with another converted try.

Despite a couple of close calls the Reds just missed to the Rhinos in what can only be described as a courageous and encouraging exhibition.

With a direct flight to Sydeny and with the experience of this game under their belt, fans should be confident of another big game from their team next weekend against the Erina Eagles at The Entrance.

Stay tuned!

Bad luck for the WAR, but still a good showing for their first game back, if they keep this up, they should have a very good home record and prove hard to beat.

Well done :thumbsu:
