Listening to what richo, wallace and others say about him and what he bring to teh club. what he brings is such a hard work ethic and sets the bar for the rest of the team. those who were at the training day before carlton game, he was working his but of even though he wasent playing.

People who just throw his name in trades is just ludicrous

Not takeing away from Vlas and Ellis but i reckon the reason they play so hard and train hard as well has something to do with foley being around

Plough said he and Cross are the best trainers he's coached

Preseason critical. He was a star of the competition, but that's 5 years ago now.

He'll give it his best shot. Hopes are modest, but if he could get back to something near his best that'd be huge.

And, he is not a tagger

Birdman its not really Foley that's the problem. Its his bloody contract, its massive. If his contract was manageable we may have not been open to discussions with other clubs. Bottom line, clubs who inquired balked at the contract size he was on.

Really not sure if he's in our 22 come round 1. Has lost his pace and was struggling to have an impact on games late last year. Seems the younger mids have gone past him unfortunately.

I seem to be one of the few that thinks he will have a very solid 2014 after an injury free past 12 months.

I dont expect he will get back to his best form which was probably an "A" but I think we will see a solid "B" grade mid next season.

Really??
He was signed for 3 years AFTER he did his Achilles. Hardly top of the market...

He was on again on Saturday night. I still think he was in top form.

People also seem to forget how good he was before his achilles injury. Its not an easy injury to come back from. Give the bloke a solid preseason and i reckon he'll be close to what his best was ... not gunna chuck him off the deep end after all the rehab he's had to go through. IMO he will fire in '14.

The club hasnt spoken to him about a trade at all this off season, the club loves him and he loves the place they wanted to look after him and thats why he got the 3 years , understandably he was gutted after the final being dropped on form for a huge final would upset anyone, he is back working hard and i expect him to be better again in 2014, his contract certaintly isnt massive money but a 3 year contract after an achilles injury was a show of faith from the club no doubt

can you define massive?

Gig contract - I dont believe

Foley has been injured for 2 years and would of been just happy that the club offered him 3 years
I cant imagine him to be on any higher than $300-$350k

Anything we get from Axel next year is a bonus but feel as the best is behind him - Love for him to prove me wrong though

Well and truly past his best but as good as any depth/sub midfielder. People forget, not necessarily how good he is, but how important he can be to a side with other good midfielders. Back in 2008 he was pure class and basically did it single handedly. I suspect his body will forever hold him back but he CAN be important still. Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Jackson, Conca, Ellis and Vlastuin....throw in Foley as a smart, creative, explosive and skillful player who can come on as a clutch sub and it will be terrific for our guys. Even in 2013 he had some fantastic glimpses where people realised just how good he could have been if not for the injuries.

I can't remember which game it was but there was one moment where Axel was running past a couple of team mates and got given a hospital ball via hand, and just before he got tackled/bumped cleverly put the ball on the boot to hit up an I50 target. 99% of AFL players would have either been tackled or wasted the possession. It was Boomer Harvey type stuff that probably was missed/ignored by most on here.

Annnyyywway. There is a small chance he will be a huge contributor from here on in but I'd love him to get some reward just for a year or two and become the Matty Boyd/Boomer Harvey that he definitely could have been without the pesky injuries. :D

Not sure how anyone knows he is past his best, has shown an ability to come back from injury in the past, if he can get a good run at it over the next 2 years i think its quite possible he can play really really good footy again especially in a deep midfield, cant wait to see how he goes

hope he comes out and smashes pre season and has a huge round 1...

he's probably on around 400-450 id guess.. which is a bit silly. performance incentives and games based maybe. cos if he came back to his best somehow, he could win the B&F..

As I said in another thread, the club dropped him for our biggest game in over a decade. They obviously think he is no longer up to it, and so have no issues with them shopping him around if they choose to do it, but I think he'll be at the club next year, and play a lot as the sub.

I'm on the Foley train to be a decent player next year. He should be better for the run in 2013, and will not have to shoulder a heavy load. But I only expect a good B grade player, not the A grader he could have been. If he gets his speed back and can go hard then we might just have something special. But so much time out with bad injuries usually spells problems.
