What do we do with John McCarthy?

The "soft" calls are bewildering.

I'd move him simply because he has no hope of breaking into our 22 given how strong we are at inside mid, but just like Danny Stanley he'll make a bottom 8 team very happy if he can stay fit. Fair value is around 35 imo, but market value would be closer to a 3rd rounder at best.

Goldsack - no. 63
Brown - no. 70
Swan - no. 58
Shaw - no.48

O'Brien was a 2nd rounder too I'm pretty sure.

Just sayin'

Shaw was a father son.
L.Brown, nobody else wanted him.
Swan struggled badly in his first few seasons, not unlike J-Mac really.

Point is we are in premiership mode right now....in 2012 - 2014 a guy like McCarthy will offer more than any kid we pick up with pick 50 odd.

We lack depth at the moment IMO, unless you are backing in guys like Sinclair, J.Thomas, Seedsman on being ready made AFL players.....but watching VFL J-Mac shows much more than those names on a regular basis.

J-Mac is the perfect example of the recent trend to hype up kids who are yet to debut, whilst kids who have debuted and not set the world on fire are rubbish.

D.Swan the perfect example....drafted in 2001, end of 2005 he had not set the world on fire, was still struggling to be a senior 22 player, serious off field discretions.......if the bigfooty brigade had their way he would have been delisted at the end of 2005......it was guys like Egan, Iaccabucci and Rowe who we should have been giving more opportunities to!!

This. Couldnt belive what i was reading. I think some people just assume that he is soft because he has had alot of injuries.

Swan had other issues as well though, his problem wasn't purely football related.
Though you make a good point re players not given the time they need, this is why list management is difficult. The coaches need to evaluate where they think a young player will be in 3 years when they decide who to delist and this is easy to get wrong. If the thinking is Jmac will not be playing 20 games in 2013/14 then he will most likely be delisted/traded.

Personally I don't see him being a contributor to our side nor do I think he is particularly handy depth so would happily accept any trade offered and would delist if necessary.

I'm ok with keeping him for depth, can understand why he would want to leave for opportunity.

Norths 3rd round pick at best, unless we do something like mccarthy and our 2nd rd pick for norths 2nd rd pick

McCarthy has done some pretty courageous acts on a footy ground and cannot be termed soft, certainly not softer the Ryan Lonie, as I saw somweone describe him! He has really only played one injury free year since he came to the club. He needs to learn some new tricks and better assess his options, but should not be let go for less than a late 2nd round pick. Otherwise, keep him another year.

Mate, if someone offered a fourth round pick, I'd take it in a heatbeat. Far too slow, doesnt have the shoulders to stick a tackle around the packs and very minimal skill by foot or by hand. Get something for him at the very least or delist.

As many have mentioned he would a be a walk up start in half the sides in the league, you don't delist players like this. If North want him pick 40 it is.

Be rid of him. Trade or no trade, just be rid of him.

The fact that Buckley hasn't talked him into staying, and seems to have talked Goldsack into staying, means Buckley has already managed the list better before he's even started, than Mick did in his first year or 2.

Guaranteed if Mick was still our coach, McCarthy would be staying at Collingwood.

Mcarthy - trade for pick 30-45 or one more year. Would be handy depth next year. We all saw how important that is this year.
Mcaffer - keep 100% way more important to our structure then most people seem to give credit for!
Tooves - maybe if we got offered the right amount. Got a feeling bucks prefers good kickers and goldy is snapping at his heels
Goldy - see above
Wellingham - maybe if the price was right. Might be able to get a cheeky required player if we had someone of his Ilk on the table. I would like to keep him but I see him as a player which could be replaced.
L brown - goneskis
Dick - try get a trade with ANYONE done otherwise I'm sorry son but your body just ain't right
That's all I can think of I'd be willing to part with
