When you look at the nucleus of Manchester United's squad:

Goalkeepers:

Barthez
Ricardo
Carrol

Defenders:

Ferdinand
O'Shea
Brown
Blanc
Silvestre
Gary Neville

Midfielders:

Beckham
Giggs
Keane
Scholes
Butt
Veron
Fortune

Strikers:

Van Nistelrooy
Solskjaer
Forlan

In terms of depth, there is one gaping deficency: quality strikers.

While Ruud Boy and The Assassin are all class, we need another man who can not only put the ball in the back of the net, but can hold the ball and create opportunites for others. Ruud and Solskjaer are great at putting the ball away, but they need others to create for them.

I'm getting sick of us not being able to carve up defences like we used to.

I was watching the video of our treble season and the main difference to today's team, (in my opinion) was a quality and creative strikeforce. The most important part was undoubtedly Dwight Yorke; the control that man had over the ball was phenomenal! He also had the most assists for our team that season - along with the second-most goals - amazing! Also, Cole, while not as skilled as Yorke, was amazing around goals, some of te ones he scored were f*cking amazing! Then add Teddy Sheringham to this list and you begin to see our current problem.

Maybe my perceptions were biased by a little tinge of pride and awe from that team (Jordi Cruyff also amazed), but we were so much more complete and menacing back then.

I know we're up sh*t creek without a paddle right now with injuries, but our forward set up simply isn't going to achieve greatness - the only thing this great club should strive for.

We desperately need a Yorke/Cantona type players who has exceptional dribbling skills; someone who can keep the ball for as long as necessary, score goals, and have that creative flair which we simply don't seem to have anymore.

A Recoba or a Shevchenko would do nicely....

Thoughts? Who do you want?

You're exactly right. And you know what, I hadn't thought of Recoba, but thinking about him now, it'd make sense. We could play Veron in Europe and Recoba at home.

The Hitman

Recoba makes more than Beckham and would cost 30million squid.

ManU will not fork out that much. Although he would put Beckham and Giggs to shame. That man can make a ball curve.

Sheva may be up for grabs after his stints on the bench but Man U will need to fork out a bit of cash to get this star. Other good players that many people may not have thought of:

Rosicky (Dortmund) - Can score and create so many chances. Leading assits for Dortmund for many years. My pick in terms of ability, potential and ability to buy

Saviola (Barca) - Would be the perfect player for Man U's problem. Barca won't part with him though unless Man U break the bank significantly. Has ability and pontential, hard to buy though

D'Allesandro (River) - Like Javier, can score and create. ONly problem is that he is still young and mabye a little too inexperienced for Man U. Has pontetial and would be easy to buy, just the current ability is the problem.

Well said Chris. No chance he will leave for a cra*ppy team like Man U

Me too would like another striker to make it 4 in the squad.

Would like to see a right sided player such as Luke Chadwick to come up, coz i just don't like the idea of Solskjaer playing on the right when Beckham is out. I see Solskjaer as more of a forward who can pinch hit on the right.

Can't Scholes and Veron be the types to hold the ball and create opportunites for others? I spose thas why we need a 4th striker so Scholes can play that role instead of a forward alongside van Nistlerooy.

Blanc won't be playing for too much longer, so another defender of some sorts would help.

Well the January transfer window will be opening up soon, so there's opportunity to improve the squad then.

Oh and manutd/dogs, you forgot defender/midfielder Phil Neville in that squad of yours.

Leeds want to sell Viduka and are only talking about 7 million pounds.

I was going to post, "thanks, but no thanks", but on reflection, 7 million quid wouldn't be bad for a squad player. He does run hot and cold, but he is the type of "physical striker" that we haven't had since Sparky Hughes.

Thanks but no thanks. Even thou we do need a 4th striker, i don't want Viduka. There's gotta be better options. Perhaps a youngun to develop in our squad to be a regular senior in the future. Theirry Henry was one such player last time too, but Sir Alex overlooked him!

We don't need that fat bastard.

In hindsight does anyone think selling David Healy was a bad idea? I don't think that he's fairing too badly at PNE. Healy is of course not the large presence that the V bomber is.

500k for Duncan Disorderly (Ferguson)? Or is he still injured?

Maybe Guti or Morientes ... not getting much of a go ... but convincing them to leave the glamour of Real Madrid to play for ManU may be hard.

If only someone had said that just before we signed Neil Webb.

I don't think Healy would add anything that was different to Solksjear. There were a few raised eyebrows when Fergie did sell him (and there is a clause in Healy's contract that ensures that United get a percentage of any fee if PNE sell him to another club), but I don't think he's blossomed as people had expected.

Have any of the Fergie fledging rejects prospered since being sold? Curtis, Higginbotham, Johnson, Savage, Wallwork, Clegg etc. have all become solid professional footballers, but there have been no regrets in seeing them ply their trade at other clubs.

A few more names to that list:

Grant Brebner (plying his trade in the SPL)
Johnathan Greening (future england international  )
Pat McGibbon (famous for getting sent off!)

I was thinking Healy would only be useful as another reserve striker, of some reasonable quality. But hey we have some good reserves in Daniel Nardiello and Danny Webber (on loan at watford?)

It's probably crap (sourced from the Daily Mirror), but here's the latest striker to be linked to a move to Old Trafford.

Miroslav Klose to Old Trafford

Manchester United have been offered Germany striker Miroslav Klose for £5million, according to the Daily Mirror.

Kaiserslautern have been told to sell their prized possession to help meet a tax bill of £30million.

Although German clubs such as Bayern Munich would no doubt be interested, Kaiserslautern would prefer Klose to sign for an overseas team.

He was very highly rated defender, but he lacked pace.

Johnathan Greening (future england international  )

Apparantly his ego was much greater than his ability - go and stand next to Healy and Curtis.

About the only kid that has managed to test Fergie's limits and get away with it was David Beckham.

Pat McGibbon (famous for getting sent off!)

Another one that had great things expected, but it seems that his confidence was very fragile.

After the batch that delivered Giggs, Beckham, the Nevilles, Butt, and Scholes, I think that we tend to expect too much of kids that come through. We've listed plenty of teenagers who had the "next big thing" tag attached to their names, and all of them have come up short - we probably expect too much of them.
