Hi !

just wondering what it would cost to send a kid to a fairly good private school in Melbourne or Adelaide...

say Caufield Gram...or PAC / St Peters

High school only

apart from the cost of the child losing any social or moral values of course ! ;)

"....there's only 2 things you get from a private school education....

1. you get a top job with the BBC and
2. you get an interest in perverse sexual activities.

that's why British industry is so inefficient...when they get to the boardroom they're all too busy slamming each other's dicks in the door...."O'h go on Sir Michael....do it again !!"

Too much! Seriously though, you're looking at $11K+ per year in the early years for tutition only. Remember it costs for uniform (hundreds), shoes, laptops (some schools) compulsory sport (ie equipment) plus any musical instrument fees if your child wants to take up an instrument.

Caulfield gram is about 13,500. This is a similar price to other APS schools in Melb (Scotch and Melb Gramm more expensive).

Any decent private school in Melbourne which offers a broad range activities for students will cost a min of $10K. If you want exact prices most schools will have it on the web sites.

per year.

I think we make 3 payments of around $3,500 each year.

It's worth it though I think. I mean I'm not paying but it's good education, good socially and has plenty of facilities. Sporting teams are also good.

Youngs ones yeah ??

After I finished my high schooling at a public school (a very good public school back then), I was certain on sending my kids to a public school when the time comes.

But after being on this planet for a few more years, there is no doubt in my mind that my kids will be going to a private school.

Ok Caulfield starts from around $12 000 for year 7 then costs more & more each year. At the moment yr 12 is around $15 000. If you're sending your child to Caulfield Grammer get in early because I know people who couldn't get places there. Also remember Caulfield Grammer have a trip that all students must go on to China in year 9.

I'm pretty sure to get into St Peters in Adelaide, your old man has to have been an Old Scholar.

SNOBS.

I go to a public school. I feel that the only things that private schools teach you more than a public school can is to never let anything or one get in the way of making money or getting what you want and you get a false sense of your own self importance.

Oh and they walk to though VCE so that yep, you get a great score, but you don't know how to do it on your own.

There's amazing stats about the dropout rates at uni between public and private school students. Private school dropouts are much higher.

Public Schools are much more in touch with the 'realistic' world.

Private Schools are much more in touch with 'idealistic' world.

This is probably why there are so many dropouts at Uni when - shock horror - Privates have to mix with 'Commoners'.

There's a notion of 'succeeding' in some circles if you're able to go to a Private School and then onto an 'elite' University and round it out with a highly paid job in the corporate sector.

Success is to me is about being a 'good' person, and going to a private school certainly doesn't do anything to bring 'success' to me.

i don't get why so many private and public schools have these little petty fights going on......

private schools look down on public schools as unworthy

public schools look down on private schools as soft**** snobs.

i went to a bottom of the range private school, so i got the best of both worlds i think.

I have friends from all sorts of backgrounds, worked pretty hard (in certain areas) myself.

I've managed to get quite a few connections through some of my private school friends, but i've still managed to keep a toughness about myself.

I think you'll find that people will make what they want to, regardless of where they go to.

but i love changing people perceptions - one time i was walking home from school, and i walked past a couple of public schools guys. i didn't even see them originally but i just heard someone yell out 'waverley ****ers' so i turned around and asked them to back up, but naturally they didn't.............now whos the soft****.

i'm sorry, but thats a generally ill-informed comment. i've found that the most private school people are allright, even though's from Kerry Packer's own nursery - Cranbrook, are generally OK.

you won't find snobs in public schools, because snobbyness usually comes from money, and if you had money you wouldn't go to a public school.

but anyone that acts like that because someone doesn't have money deserves a big whack across the face. whilst anyone that immediatedly takes a disliking to private schools deserves an equally big whack across the face.

maybe its just the fact that my school was a very low class private school, that i haven't find snobbyness a problem.

I'd like to know just what it is that makes private schools so much 'better' than public schools. Sure they have a reputation, but what more do they achieve in the end? Reputation is shallow. I go to a public school (mainly because I'll be damned if I'm going to the Catholic school in the next town, I'd rather go to just about any school than a Catholic school. Nothing against Catholics, but I am not one myself and would rather not be preached their religion), and I don't consider myself as receiving any different sort of education to those who attend a private school.

The point is, if you will do well, then you can do well anywhere. VCE content is the same statewide. Just how is it that you get better scores at a private school, when you're learning the same thing? If you need to go to a so called 'better' school to get an education or to do well, it's a reflection of the person.

And it's certainly not making any difference to me. I'm doing a lot better than many people I know from private schools, and I know I can get the score I need for the course I want to get into. Which is Science at the University of Melbourne, no less - just about Australia's most prestigious university (no, that's not why I want to go there :o), so what difference will it make to me next year?
