What if we had drafted properly in 2000? From three first round picks we have managed Luke Livingston, Trent Sporn and Simon Wiggins. If we hadn't recruited so stupidly in those years the team would look so much better. It's not just because of the penalties that we are so bad now, half of it is because of the smart recruiting we did then.

No question. Three picks in the first round, and we did screw it up.
  1. Nick Riewoldt
  2. Justin Koschitzke
  3. Alan Didak
  4. Luke Livingstone
  5. Andrew McDougall
  6. Dylan Smith
  7. Laurence Angwin
  8. Daniel Motlop
  9. Kayne Pettifer
  10. Jordan McMahon
  11. Trent Sporn
  12. Shaun Burgoyne
  13. Ashley McGrath
  14. Daniel Harris
  15. Simon Wiggins
  16. Scott Thompson
OK, we never had a shot at the first three, and imagine if it was our 1st round pick instead of Adelaide's that got Angwin. But Jordan McMahon, Shaun Burgoyne, Scott Thompson, and even Daniel Harris hurt (although Thompson went back to Adelaide anyway). Imagine how much better our on-ball division would be with SB and ST.

It's all hit and miss.

  1. Nick Riewoldt
  2. Justin Koschitzke
  3. Alan Didak
  4. Luke Livingstone
  5. Andrew McDougall- can't make Eagles side
  6. Dylan Smith- delisted
  7. Laurence Angwin- delisted
  8. Daniel Motlop- good player
  9. Kayne Pettifer- average player
  10. Jordan McMahon- reasonable player
  11. Trent Sporn
  12. Shaun Burgoyne- good player
  13. Ashley McGrath- average player
  14. Daniel Harris- good player
  15. Simon Wiggins
  16. Scott Thompson- good player

We couldn't have got top 3 anyway.

It wasn't just that year that cost. We recruited poorly for at least five years.
1997: Pick 7-Kris Massie
Players picked up after Massie: Chris Tarrant, Chad Kornes, Nick Stevens, Brodie Holland, Simon Black and Adam Goods.

1998: Pick 6-Murray Vance
Players picked up after Vance: Josh Carr, Jude Bolton, Lenny Hayes, Brady Rawlings, Brett Burton and Andrew Embley.

There was also 2000 but i don't need to mention that one.

Yeah, they all hurt too. And 1999 for that matter (no kids in the first 50 at all). At least Massie had something though. We could still use him off a half-back flank where he played pretty good football for us. Brittain was an idiot to trade him.

Ever since 2003, when we were losing just about every game, I've never (or tried to) said what if about a footy game. What if this happened, what if he scored that was all I thought about during/just after the games. Waste of time, it's not going to change anything. We chose badly and are paying for it now.

Only in hindsight but although 2000 was critical, hindsight is not the right way to make the call.

Phantom drafts at the time had Livingstone going exactly were he went and also had Wiggins fairly close. Sporn was the only one we took earlier than expected as he was touted to go in the 30s. If we didn't take them when we did, someone else would have. I think we were just extremely unfortunate that we took 3 rated youngsters and none of them came on as expected. Just highlights that there are no guarantees in the draft as it relies on how gun kids are able to adapt to being a small fish in a bigger pond and also how they are able to physically develop.

Agree with everything you have said ODN.

There is no point in dwelling on the past. What's done is done. We have to look towards the future now and hope that our picks from here on turn into champions!

It's all about perspective. The majority of AFL supporters are saying that Bryce Gibbs should go number 1 this year. If Bryce ends up a dud and Hansen or Gumbleton or Selwood or Leuenberger end up stars, most of those supporters will turn around and talk about how we stuffed up. Most of our supporters will refer to it as bad recruiting despite actually wanting it to happen at the time.

Most of the draft picks that go bad aren't bad recruiting IMO ... they are simply bad luck.
