What do you see James Hird as? A champion or a legend?

I've been having a disagreement with a mate of mine (an Essendon supporter) who is adamant that James Hird should be classed as a legend.

I disagree with him. I rate Hird as a champion. I believe that the word "legend" should only be used for the players who really stood out. Eg Matthews, Coleman, Ablett, Carey etc.

If Hird is classed as a legend, I believe that would put too many players in the same catagory, making the word a bit of a farce.

By saying this, I'm not trying to disrespect Hird. I think he has been fantastic.

What do people think?

Legend. I know I'm Essendon and all, but him, Carey and Vossy can lift a side and turn a game off their own boot like no other players I have seen in the past 20 years. 3 Legends every 20 years doesnt overkill the word 'legend'..

Voss and Hird wouldn't be classed as legends above Ablett and Lockett.

Champion - As you say, not everyone is a legend, and in the past 20 years, I'd suggest that Carey, Ablett, Lockett and Dunstall are all legends of the game.

Guys like Hird, Buckley, Voss... Comfortably champions, possibly verging on legends, but they're not quite in that same class.

10 years out of the game and they'll be called legends. All three of them.

Good post. I tend to agree with this.

That's sort of what I was trying to spit out. I agree that those 3 would be the next level down.

James Hird's a legend of Essendon, Absolute champion of the game

not a legend of AFL...Voss would be closer IMO

I wouldn't call Dunstall a legend.

Hi every one...i am the person that budda is disagreeing with...nice to meet you all.....My reasoning for my comment is the following....2 premierships 1 as captain, 1 norm smith medal, 3 anzac day medals, 3 b/f, 3 times all australian and proberbly many more.... His influence on his team mates have been outstanding. The younger bombers that have come thru idolise him...sheedy idolises him....and above all this does anyone have any idea what he has had to endure to achieve all this....broken face, soft tissue injurys, stress fractured feet...ankle operation b4 hitting 16...what else.....i rest my case...if you polled the media there would be a favouring response to my opinion...i guarantee it

Legend of the game. I've been watching footy regularly since 1996 so I saw Carey at his best, and I rate Hird better. Carey and Hird had that quality players like Judd, Kerr, Goodes and Riewoldt lack. The ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and completely turn it around with 1 kick, 1 mark or 1 goal. We will never again see a player like Hird and I am dreading Rd 21 this year, as it will be the last time I get to see Sir James Hird play at the MCG :(

If Judd hasn't got the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck, then no one does.
