It will take 3 drafts with a 60-70% strike rate to get us back to a competitive side again.

2009 looks to be below 50%...... losing Roberts and Taylor with Nason not kicking on will hurt us long term.

2010 is looking really good.

2011... Danger signs already. We are screaming for a ruckman.... and we look like throwing a fair bit on a established ruckman.

What worries me is if we get this draft wrong we will stagnate further. It doesn't take much looking back to our failed attempts to get a leg up by going after established players... and more than anything the 2001... 2002 and 2003 drafts have screwed us big time.

What I want us to do is go as deep into the draft as we can again. We showed last draft period that we can make good decisions......

We are not in a position to waste picks on the hope that an established player will improve us.

Surely it's better to keep Graham and Browne as they move into the age bracket when Rucks start to make an impact and simply stock up on some more Rookie rucks....

Kruezer aside, Carlton spent a fair bit getting Warnock and then found they had Jacobs and Hampson and probably didn't need Warnock.

Keep on the drafting the best available kids threw the draft.....

2012 will be the draft that makes or breaks us, 3 picks in the top 30, 2 of those picks in the top20, in a draft that is being touted as one the greatest of all time.

I have no problem with the club trading it's first round pick this year, as long as they can find us a Batchelor/Helbig with our later picks I think we will be fine, it was always going to take 4-5 years to clean the list out properly.

Lets not forget that Woosha said it took them 3 years to get the forward press up and going, it would be unfair to judge Dimma and the other coaches to harshly before giving them sufficient time to implement certain things into the team.

The compensation pick we go from Adelaide for Tambling will be gone in this trade period IMO. e will use that plus another pick/player to get a ruckman.

The safest route that Hardwick and the football department can take is trading players for picks. Not the other way around. Keep going down the path of youth.

If they decide the top up then they will lose the support of the members very quickly.

I think this year we will go down the path of all youth. No players from other clubs. Griggs and Miller were simple picked up so we dont have a team of teenagers running around on the field. They will be thrown out in a year or 2 as our younger boys improve and come on.

I think the club should keep it simple.

We need to recruit a mature Ruckman. We will have to trade a decent pick and a player. Problem is, we don't have many players with trade currency that we will want to trade. Once we have a Ruckman, no more trades !

We need to draft a ruckman (first round pick) with the intention of being a second ruck to Vickery in 3-4 years time. The traded Ruckman (see above), will fill this gap of 3-4 years.

For the rest of the National Draft - we draft the best possible kids and a project Ruckman with our last pick OR pick up a discarded Ruck in the PSD.

I think Browne is still young and could develop. We have seen the best of Graham.

The rebuild was always going to take 3 years or more. We just need to keep drafting kids and not recycling players.

I really hope you're right mate because I don't think Richmond members and supporters in general can handle another failed top up attempt.

Well not according to Emma Quale. She said it was her opinion and that of a senior club recruiter that its good without being over the top up until 25-30 then its drops away dramatically to very ordinary. It appears only the HeraldSun has been touting it as the best ever.

That would be the 2011 draft (this year). Emma has even recently said that next year (2012 as MT stated) should be a beauty with a number of under age players already playing a significant role in this year's U18 champs. On top of that, it will ot be compromised like the previous two.

Most would assume we are saving our Tambling comp pick for next year for this reason.

What you have stated is the reason why MT says he wouldn't mind us using our early pick this year to get a decent trade happening. Personally, I am not so sure. You're always half a chance to get very good players in the top 30 of any draft.

I've been resigned to the fact that we are 2-3 quality drafts away from making a serious push for a while. We have zero depth and not enough quality across the park.

Luckily for us you aren't involved with our trading/recruiting. :)

I think it's pretty simple really that doesn't need much explanation, if we save our compensation pick for 2012 we will have 3 picks in the top30, 2 of which would be in the top20.

The talk of us looking at Hamish McIntosh doesnt sit well with me to be honest. :thumbsd: Some 27yo player who struggles to keep himself on the park through injuries with a year to go on his contract.

Nth have said he is a required player, means we have to pay overs for him. The club is plain dumb if it goes after him. If they want him that bad wait a year then North have no bargaining rights and we pick up a 28yo injury riddle player for chips.

I personally wouldnt even bother and would rather they look elsewhere for our Ruck answer. If we start trading 1st & 2nd round picks for players we all know what that means .........:thumbsd:

The fact that the coach didn't watch last week's match with the players worries me. Very much. The jumper was never supposed to hit the floor but after they let it drop and then shat on it, the coach just says "forget it, let's move on"?

**** that.

Did you actually READ my post???? IMO the club will trade that pick.... I dont want them too. The way we are being linked to every out of contract player above 195cm says to me that Blair Hartly is making some inroads trying to attract a tall. That compensation pick will be in the mix to be traded if we go after a tall.

as has been mentioned on this thread, whilst the top end talent is pretty good, clubs are struggling to identify 30 A grade players.

Unlikely there'll be too many diamonds in the rough this year

It worries me that we are going after a Tall full stop. Lets keep our picks for the next 2-3 years building the strongest possible midfield.... try and find a tall deep in the draft in the mean time, if unsuccessful then trade for one.

If we trade for 27 year old injury prone ruckman I wont me a member next year.

We already have a decent midfield. Who are you proposing we replace? Martin? Cotchin? Foley? Deledio? Grigg? Conca? Nahas? The only ones i would replace is Grigg, Edwards and White. Some would say Jackson but his leadership and hardnosed attitude on the field is something that the team needs. Not to mention he is our best tagger. I would like us to spend only this year focusing on our midfield, with next year being a super draft, and with three picks inside the top 30, we can draft a midfielder, and a Ruckman. If we get Trengove, we can cross out a KPD as an emergency draft necessity. I would also like to see the club draft a KPF in the case that Griff doesn't kick on or his injuries prevent him from doing so. An insurance policy if you will.

Think about what you're typing for a second and then you will understand the stupidity of it, why would the club trade it's compensation pick when it could just trade it's first round pick this year and save the compensation pick for 3 top30 picks in 2012?

Not everybody that we are linked to are we going to trade for, the best option they have is to trade our First round pick and then use the draft with all of our other picks.

Exactly, which is why most clubs with late first round picks will probably be looking to trade them off for known quality players, I have a feeling this will be the busiest trade week in history (Excluding crazy old vossys shopping spree).

No one needs bandwagon supporters like you. :thumbsd:

A decent midfield wont win you a flag..... We need atleast 2-3 more quality mids to go with side like Collingwood, Geelong and WC

So you are inferring that I am stupid to suggest that the club would be stupid enough to trade an end of first rnd pick for a Ruck... ???? lets just wait and see...

All I am saying is that the midfield is the least of our worries. We can easily grab the midfielders later on in the draft. We need to target the best available ruckman with our first pick. If he is not worth the first rounder we have for him, then draft a midfielder. You said to bolster our midfield. So far the most glaring deficiency in our midfield is our Ruck stocks.

In my eyes the most important things we need are:

1: Ruck

2: Small Defender: We always get ripped apart by the little blokes. Farmer is too slow to take them, Newman is too important to stay that close to opposition goals.
3: Key Position Defender. (If we get Trengove, skip this)
4: Midfielder.
5: Tall Forward (Insurance policy if Griff doesn't come on or if injuries prevent him from doing so.)

The reason I have a Midfielder so low is because with The small defender, it would allow Batchelor to be a true Hb flanker, along with Newman, releasing both Deledio and Conca into the middle. If we draft one little small defender, we get the bonus of bolstering our midfield permanently, whilst guys like edwards and white would not get a game.

NEVER us your early picks for "needs". Pick the best available player between 180cm and 190..... with your first pick.... then draft for needs. Unless there is a stand out key Position player.
