jus wondering what everyones thoughts are about this. I know trading it in the past we have got some benefit out of it with Jolly and maybe Richards. Last year we drafted O'keefe and I think that was the way to go. With Bird being a midfielder and already under a scholarship with us what do you think we will look for CHF CHB FF FB?

I think we need a defender as our defence isnt getting any younger and in afew years will will be lacking in that area.

For the last few years they have said they have taken "the best available" (Willoughby ). Surely this year they'll choose the best KPP with the first rounder.

Not unless we give our top draft pick to trade Fevola... There are talks about him moving to Sydney, but I doubt it.

We need to focus on taller, hard bodied defenders. Leo Barry will be gone soon...

I agree 100%. Leo Barry only has afew years left in him and players like Kennelly will be leaving after 2009 so its important to get ready for the day where we dont have those 2 players in our squad.

We shouldn't lose hope. Kennelly might not go at the end of 2009. Roosy says that he only has 3 more years to convince Kennelly to play again for the Swans. :D But I doubt it anyway. We've already seen over the past few weeks how much we need Tadhg. His presence alone on the field holds the defence together. His rebounds and slick hand passes really pulls the Swans out of trouble.

It would be great if Kennelly decided to stay with the Swans beyond 2009 but i dont think its going to happen. This is the draft where we must find replacements for both Kennelly and Barry as it usually takes several years before rookies are ready for the top league.

well will still have O'keefe, Bird and Schmidt being trained in the midfield so we probally don't need anymore this year. lets jus hope we get a solid defender.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they're focusing on recruiting young, tall and hard bodied defenders at the end of this year.

We may already have replacements for Tiger and Barry on the list. Laidlaw, maybe, as a HBF, and maybe someone like Rowe or even Grundy as a key defender. Interestingly, Grundy spent the whole of last week's game playing at FB and CHB and the coaches were obviously impressed given they named him BOG. He's not going to step in straight away to replace a Leo but it looks like they're willing to experiment a bit with him. He did play in defence in the SANFL so it's not as if it's totally foreign to him. But the biggest issue with the quality of the opposition the reserves usually play against is that it's hard to develop defenders. Belconnen last week was a great opportunity to do so, for a change.

Interesting thought that.

Leo Barry was a forward in the early part of his career and he didn't set the world alight. A move down back saved his career and he has been solid ever since.

Will Grundy be the same?

Do the Swans need another young ruckman?

Do you think you would draft one if you Father-Son Darcy Daniher? ;)
He is a very tall FB or FF, perhaps more suited to FF but Silvagni like with a bit of work could become a premier FB. If not already Sydney should start some serious talks with the Family and Darcy.

  1. Tynte Pears or Alex Rance if still avaliable
  2. Darcy Daniher
  3. ?
  4. Craig Bird I think we'd be pretty happy with that!

Do the Swans need another young ruckman?

Daniel Currie who was drafted last year is set to join the swans full time next year big wraps on him 200cm. Earl Shaw ruckman on rookie list don't know how heis travelling.

I was reading in his swans write up that he was bottom age last year so they took the risk with him thinking he would go top ten this year. H played ressies for the swans on the weekend they say he rucked well but didn't do much around the ground.

to be fair to all those whining essendon fans and eddie mcguire, let's just give it to the dons or the pies, let them have it, i mean, we've just had SOOOO many concessions and free rides over the years....they can share ALL our draft picks, and maybe even share the 2005 premiership too....

If essendon finishs below us we know they will use there 2nd rounder to pick up Darcy Daniher, we should trade our 2nd rounder for Ryan Willits.

I thought id bring this thread back up again. The Brisbane game showed us that the defence is still rather good even without Kennelly and Leo Barry so im not as worried about our defence as i previously was. What is concerning me now is that our current forward line is not perfoming at all. We all have to remember that Micky O will probably be retiring by the end of 2008 and its time we think about a replacement for him. The Swans have plenty of midfield options in future years but i think they should draft at least 1 forward and afew defenders. I think our 1st draft pick should be the forward as we will be seriously lacking in that area in afew years time.

Prob forwards, I'd say. But I'm a big believer in picking the best available talent, rather than simply deciding to target one position or another.

Since this thread was first posted I've actually seen what the "Cheese" has to offer. And I think we can add him into the mix along with Laidlaw and Grundy as Liz mentioned as a potential ready-made defender in time. So I'm actually very confident about maintaining the defence post Leo and Tiger. Especially wiht LRT and Dempster still to come back into the side.

Can't speak for the forward line just yet. We haven't really trialled anyone in this position - other than Grundy or Vogels I think? And it'd be nice to get a squizz at Jesse White at the senior AFL lewvel before I start thinking about who we want to spearhead our furture.
